Rather an interesting item as Humphries and Smith indicate that the publishers Button and Whitaker commenced their partnership in 1808 and yet there is very clearly a rather feint 17?? Date as printed for Button & Whitaker on the frontis. Front cover and 28pp of text & music, including 10pp of instruction, 1pp of terms and 17 pages of often notable musical examples and pieces to play, many Scots tunes and several by Handel. 8vo size and recently expertly rebound in leather card covers with gilt titles. The publisher David Rutherford(Foord)operated from 1745-71. Frontispiece by Wooding and engraved by Mortimer and maybe title-page, lacks the final blank endpapers, but generally a very good copy. English Short Title Catalogue locates four copies of this edition: BL and three in Bodleian, two, lacking the Preface, which is present in this copy, but with the Index of songs bound at the end and followed by 6 pages of Toasts and Sentiments at the end. ESTC N20141, the 1788 edition, locates copies in O, Ou; MH-H, CtY-Mus, ICU, PPL. Cloth covered boards with leather tips, leather spine with raised gilt bands and gilt titles. 106pp of engraved music, titles, advertisement and index by Anderson of Edinburgh . 51 original Scottish songs for the voice including 4 duets. With introductory & concluding symphonies & accompaniments for the pianoforte, violin & violin cello by Pietro Urbani(1749-1816). Many pieces set to the poetry of Burns, including My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose, Ye Banks & Braes of Bonny Doon , the poetry of Ramsay and others and some of the other lyrics of great songs that became known as Child Ballads. Over the period 1792-1804 six such folios were issued and this is the first. Finally the book was owned and signed by Samuel Smith Travers who in 1875 built the first Royal Tennis Court in the Southern Hemisphere in Hobart. It is still in use. | GREENFIELD WILLIAM .: Various Published & Handwritten Songs . London, English Girl's Journal and privately bound. C 1850's. 20pp and folio size hard covers with his gilt bookplate on front. Greenfield was a now rather obscure Victorian composer of songs, some of which were published in the Young Ladies Journal, The English Girl's Journal and thus printed copies are here and include : Spring Flowers, I Love to Wander Lonely,I am a Fairy Bright, Nay Father Dear, Pray do Not Weep, which has a date of 1854 and Oh Mother Do Not Weep. There is also the Eudora Valse composed and hand written by Greenfield as is Topsy's Galop , Tibby's Polka and Azor Valse which is dated and signed by Greenfield , My Sister's Polka and Schottische. Greenfield has also written out My Pretty Page from Henry Quatre by Sir Henry Bishop and words by Morton. Finally attached to the front inside cover, are some previously published 'Curious Epitaphs' which were all compiled by William Greenfield. Rather a unique item .
