REBER CARL .:  The Emigrant Ship.
Manchester ,Leadbeater & Son .c 1880's. With an unsigned colour lithograph showing a central panel of a ship ploughing through the sea with two inset illustrations of sailors dancing for the emigrants in the forecastle, the ship in the midst of a storm and the centre inset the logo of the Ismay Imrie Co. Down either side is a list of the other compositions of the prolific Carl Reber and published by the small Manchester publishers Leadbeater . Of considerable significance is the dedication to the Ismay Imrie Company which made its reputation carrying immigrants to America and indeed with Harland & Wolff they had built that famous and tragic Titanic. Their Managing director Ismay was in fact a survivor of that ill fated maiden voyage. Folio size with music. Missing small area of the title word ship and previous owner name neatly cut out and two tiny pieces missing along outer edge and Stitch marks along spine in an otherwise very busy and full lithograph cover else Good.Rare publisher, composer and subject.

The lithographer Robert Jacob Hamerton(1809-1905) who was one of the earliest in the field of lithography, the main known body of his work was from the early 1860's. D'ALBERT CHARLES.:  The Leviathan Galop.
London, Chappell & Co . c 1858. With a blue coloured ornate lettered cover. Charles Louis D'Albert (1809-86) was the son of a French cavalry captain and was the major dance instructor in the middle years in British society. The largest ship in the world at that time, Brunel's Great Eastern was initially called the "Leviathan".It was launched in 1858. It is best remembered as the ship that laid the first successful Atlantic cable and several other cables. It is highly probable that this music was prepared to celebrate the successful launch and then the owners decided to rename the vessel and the music by D'Albert was downgraded to a colour ornate lettering instead of illustrated. Folio size with music. Condition VG .

The song is a patriotic song which uses the Grace Darling story as confirmation of the British people's prowess. ALLEN WALTER E.:  The Mona's Isle Polka.
Wolverhampton, E.F. Allen . 1884. With a lovely colour lithograph, by Robert Home of Edinburgh, with inset illustrations of the Laxey Wheel, a castle and lastly a larger central portrait of the paddle steamer presumably Mona's Isle. I have seen some photographs of the Mona's Isle dated 1884 which show a steamer but not a paddle steamer. In this illustration the ship is steaming out of the harbour watched and waved at by people in a row boat. There appears to have been at least three Mona's Isle ships belonging to the Isle of Man S.S. Company. The castle illustrated is probably Castle Rushen which is probably the finest medieval castle in the British Isles. The Laxey Wheel, or Lady Isabella as it was known, was constructed in 1854 by John Casement, a native of Laxey and a brilliant engineer. It was designed by him to pump the surplus water from the mines and, by cleverly using the natural fall of the mountain streams as a power source, he produced this widely acclaimed remarkable engineering feat. It remains as a major engineering feat and now tourist attraction The composer Walter E. Allen remains obscure but is probably related to the publisher Edmund F. Allan, who commenced business in 1850 and according to Parkinson published the Mona's Isle Polka in 1884. Folio size with music Condition VG.

READ EZRA.:  A Night Attack on Port Arthur.
London, W.Paxton. 1904. With a vivid dark colour lithograph showing a group of destroyers attack and sinking at least one vessel. February 8-9, 1904 was the starting battle of the Russo- Japanese War . It began with a surprise night attack by a squadron of Japanese destroyers led by Admiral Togo on the Russian fleet anchored at Port Arthur in Manchuria. The attack proved rather inconclusive with several ships hit but reparable on both sides. Formal war was declared the following day. Ezra Read(1862-1922)was born in Willenshaw, Staffordshire .He was apprenticed to a blacksmith but at 15 started to study the piano with his brother Colin. In the period 1890-1910 Read produced many pieces attached to events such as the Boer War and this war. Apparently Ezra and his wife turned out between 5000 and 6000 compositions and used 120 pen names because they didn't want to flood the market. Folio size with music. Taped along spine else condition VG.

GANTIER FELIX:  Rhein Lied Melodie Pour Piano.
London Charles Jefferys. early 1860's. With a superb colour lithograph by Thomas Packer showing a bend in the River Rhine so that two castles can be seen on the bank and in the middle of the river a small group of boats and a barge are at anchor. The composer Felix Gantier was sadly obscure even though he worked extensively for the publisher Charles Jefferys. However, I have recently seen it suggested in an entry at the University of Southampton Music Library, that Gantier was a pseudonym of Charles William Glover(1806-63) who was the violinist at Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theatres and Musical Director of the Queens Theatre London. He wrote the noted song, the Rose of Tralee(1850) and was hugely popular in America as well as Britain during this period . Folio size with music Condition VG.

MILLWARD G.:  The Moonlight Trip.
London, Evans & Co. c 1870's. With an unsigned colour lithograph in the style Thomas packer and showing a rather unusual small front paddle steamer passenger carrying vessel leaving the harbour late a night with the moon up. The composer G. Millward was clearly a popular composer for publisher Evans as on the back are listed 24 pieces of his music published. Sadly that is all the information that remains of his work. However the music confirms that the illustrations are by Thomas Packer who died in 1897 was particularly famous for the skies in his art work and it earned him the nickname of-Graduated tint Packer because he invented a process that allowed great subtlety in moonlight, sunsets and clouds and this is a fine example. Publisher Walter John Evans commenced business in 1854 and was located at this address between 1867-80.Folio size with music. Two old strips of see through tape on the outer edge and publishers imprint trimmed off else Condition VG.Very unusual ship.

RUSSELL HENRY & COOK ELIZA.:  I'm Afloat, I'm Afloat .
London, Duff & Hodgson. Nov/Dec 1841. With an unsigned monochrome ½ page illustration of a fast small sailing ship running before some fairly heavy weather that was printed by Graf. Henry Russell (1812-1900) was for seventy years an entertainer who also almost made history. He invented a mix of song and backdrop that described places and events in an heroic way or dramatic way. Far West was first heard in Britain in 1840 and within his singing he took on the various characters of the song. Woodman spare that tree, a Life on the ocean wave, The spider and the fly and A fine old English Gentleman are even today well known. In all he composed the music and some of the words and sang upwards of 800 songs. Eliza Cook(1818-89) was a precocious lyric poet who also ran Cook's Journal, a ladies periodical, from 1849 The lyrics of writer Eliza Cook was often set to music by Henry Russell. We can firmly date this piece thanks to Neighbour & Tysons work on music plate numbers. RUSSELL HENRY:  I'm Afloat
London, Musical Bouquet. c late 1840's With a ¼ page unsigned monochrome lithograph of the hero of the piece a pirate. Henry Russell (1812-1900) was for seventy years an entertainer who also almost made history. He invented a mix of song and backdrop that described places and events in an heroic way or dramatic way.Far West was first heard in Britain in 1840 and within his singing he took on the various characters of the song. Woodman spare that tree, a Life on the ocean wave,The spider and the fly and A fine old English Gentleman are even today well known. In all he composed the music and some of the words and sang upwards of 800 songs. he Musical Bouquet series commenced around 1846 and was the combined idea of James Bingley and William Strange and operated from 192 High Holborn and they blatantly pirated material from other publishers in the days before the establishment of copyright and Stationers Hall. This early sheet is actually un-numbered but was certainly before 1850. Around 1850 Chas Sheard had replaced William Strange and indeed had taken over James Bingley's investment and under his control, the Musical Bouquet continued until 1889 and ran to almost 9,000 individual pieces of music. Folio with music. Little curled along spine else condition Good +

HARROWAY J.(ARR.):  The Red White & Blue Or Britannia the Queen of the Sea.
London, Davidson's Musical Treasury. C 1850. With a ½ page colour lithograph of the Union Jack and underneath the titles in monochrome and a list of the songs and pieces in the same edition. A particularly interesting fact is that the flag is a pre-1801 pattern Union Jack flag (without the red saltire of St Patrick). Davidson the publisher made a vain attempt to match the output and popularity of the Musical Bouquet series and for the early years of the 1850's he produced much popular material. This item may relate to music being used at the time of the Crimean War.Sung by a Mr Metz who sadly remains obscure. The arranger Harroway worked extensively for Davidson. Folio size with music. WEIPPERT JOHN.:  The Floating Island Or Great Eastern Galop.
London , No publisher, c 1860. With a rare and wonderful horizontal full page coloured lithograph by Stannard & Dixon of the then largest ship in the world, the cable laying Great Eastern, alongside to give an idea of size are two small barques and a paddle steamer. The Galop was played by the band on board and also by Her Majesty's quadrille band and their conductor was John Weippert and it is reasonable to assume at the Eastern's launch in 1858, the Great Eastern was unsurpassed in length until White Star's Oceanic II in 1899. The Great Eastern was initially called the "Leviathan". It is best remembered as the ship that laid the first successful Atlantic cable and several other cables.. The orchestra leader and possible composer, John Weippert was much involved in arranging and then directing the dance music of the 1820-40's in London and he published many sets of quadrilles on popular tunes from operas and popular song, sadly information about him is a difficult to find. Clearly he performed for the young Queen Victoria, at Almacks and other major Balls in London. Folio size with music. Trimmed to lose publishers imprint and part of Weippert's name else. A very famous old song and composed by John Percy(1749-97) who was an organist, tenor singer and composer of songs, who composed mainly in the 1770's & 80's and is now only noted as the composer of this song which was still popular in the late 19th century. LENNOX LINDSAY:  The Brave That Are No More Or the Loss of the H.M. S. Victoria.
London Hart & Co. 1893. With monochrome lettering and a blue colour photograph of the HMS Victoria and an inset portrait of the late Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon . HMS Victoria , was a Victoria-class battleship sunk in a collision with HMS Camperdown in 1893 in the Mediterranean with the loss of 358 lives it seems due primarily to the decision of Vice Admiral Tryon to show a complicated manoeuvre between extremely large and unwieldy battleships. He lost his life and it has been called the British Navy's worst peacetime loss of life and disaster. Composer Lindsay Lennox wrote Love's Golden Dream for the opera singer Sims Reeves in 1895 and True to Jack in 1892 with Theo Bonheur else he remains fairly obscure. Condition VG. Rare.

JULLIEN LOUIS .:  The English Quadrille.
London L.C.A. Jullien. April 1843. With a monochrome lithograph unsigned but printed by Chabot of Snow Hill, of a frame of oak leaves and acorns and with the titles in the larger section and in the lower smaller section a view of two British Navy ships at anchor and a row boat of sailors moving towards one ship. This is a remarkable piece because the Neighbour and Tyson lists commence in May 1843, for Jullien, with number 2 and the number on the bottom of each page of this copy Number 1. So it is likely that this English Quadrille is the first published work by the Jullien Company. Certainly he has unusually entitled the publisher L.C.A. Jullien. Louis Jullien(1812-60) was a remarkable showman, composer, publisher, concert organiser who dominated music in the 1840's to the late 1850's.He mounted the concerts and wrote the music and published it,first at Drury Lane and then at the Zoological Gardens. Sadly he lost all his wealth and died a pauper in France. Folio size with music. Condition VG
