VIVIANI F.:  The Silver Trumpet
London, Chappell . c 1880's. With a lithographed front cover by Michael & Nicholas Hanhart. The music was traditionally played at St Peter’s Rome on Christmas and Easter days and is here arranged for piano by Viviani who sadly remains obscure. This particular march is played as the Pope is borne up the aisle. The artists Michael and Nicholas Hanhart were sons of the original Michael who worked with the originator of lithography in Britain, Englemann when he tried to set up in business in 1830.After he failed the Hanharts took over and became the very best at their craft and often producing superior art work as instanced here as well as printing. Folio size with music. Condition very good .

GANTIER FELIX .:  Lebanon ( Pictures of Palestine No1).
London Charles Jefferys c 1860's. With a rich colour lithograph cover by Thomas Packer of a trio of arabic men in the foreground and stretching behind them a valley and two small towns on the hill tops. The composer Felix Gantier is sadly obscure even though he worked extensively for the publisher Charles Jefferys. However, I have recently seen it suggested in an entry at the University of Southampton Music Library, that Gantier was a pseudonym of Charles William Glover(1806-63) who was the violinist at Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theatres and Musical Director of the Queens Theatre London. He wrote the noted song, the Rose of Tralee(1850) and was hugely popular in America as well as Britain during this period . There were 4 other pieces in this series and 10 in a series with operatic themes and almost always with artistic colourful lithographic covers. The publisher was only at this address until 1868 and that assists in dating. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

LISZT FRANCOIS .:  Trois Paraphrases de Concert de Verdi( Rigoletto).
Leipzig & New York ,J Schuberth & Co. c early 1860's . With a mainly lettered monochrome lithograph by Roder of Leipzig with has at the head trailing vine leaves helping to focus on the name of Verdi set in a banner. Franz Liszt (1811-86) undertook a series of opera paraphrases and I believe this one was written in 1859. Now there is a music sellers stamp Ewer & Co and the company was only at that address between 1859-67 and so this edition likely to be post 1859 and no later than 1867 and thus a very early edition. Further the publisher J. Schuberth is said to have been living in Europe between 1859-61,according to Dichter & Shapiro, and that might further assist the dating as being after he returned. Folio size with music .Condition VG. Rare .

London ,Metzler & Co . 1884/5. With a charming colour illustrated lithograph by Stannard & Son, of a village blacksmith working at his forge and a small group of children dancing outside his door in an otherwise deserted moonlight village. 7pp of music.Sadly the composer E.H. Sugg remains obscure. Metzler's are heavily advertising the music from the comic opera Nell Gwynne on the back page. That ran for a total of 86 performances ending in May 1884. and the previous owner has hand dated this sheet May 1885. Save for a neat name removal top edge , condition VG . F

PRIDHAM JOHN.:  The Forest Glade Romance.
London ,No publisher. c 1860. Folio with music. With a marvellous but unsigned colour lithograph cover of two male deer resting in a forest glade at night . John Pridham (1818-96) was a most popular composer on a theme. Whether martial or religious it seemed that themes were the key with Pridham. Amongst his supporters was Queen Victoria. Trimmed to lose the publishers imprint else condition VG.

PRIDHAM JOHN .:  The Swiss Boy.
London, Charles Jeffreys. 1874/5. With rich unsigned colour lithograph cover with a solid frame and then an oval inset, with many flowers round the edge, of the Swiss village of De Solden Oelzthal, Tyrol. The view from a river across a wood mill and the town roofs and church steeple to the mountains beyond. This Number 2 of a series gems of Switzerland. John Pridham (1818-96) was a most popular composer on a theme. Whether martial or religious it seemed that themes were the key with Pridham. Amongst his supporters was Queen Victoria. This sheet is hand dated 1893( in Hobart) but it would have been published between 1874 -6 because in 1874 the publisher moved to that address and in 1876 became Jeffreys & Co. A very fine piece of lithographic artwork. Folio size with music.Condition VG.

ASCHER JOSEPH.:  Danse Frerique Op 61.
London ,Schott & Co. c mid 1860's . With a stunning gold and blue colour lithograph, unsigned, of an endless chain of young women, probably angels circling up through clouds and towards the top of the cover and making a frame for the titles in blue and gold. Printed by B. Schott of Mayence. Joseph Ascher (1831-69).According to James Brown's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, he was born in London, although a German national and he spent most of his life in Paris .He studied under Moscheles. In Paris he became pianist to the Empress Eugenie. He wrote 130 piano pieces and some songs and in his day was considered a fine composer who led a rather dissolute life. I am indebted to a resident of the Dutch Town of Gronigen,Mr. Hans Borg, who tells me in fact Joseph Ascher was born in 1829 in Gronigen.Only his father was German and was the 'chazzan' of that time in the small Jewish community. At an early age the Ascher family moved away ( probably to London). The publishers Schott, who were responsible for some of the finest lithographic covers opened at this address in 1852. Nevertheless I feel this sheet is likely to be towards the end of Ascher's life hence the suggested date of mid 1860's.Folio size with music. Condition VG..

DUPIS LOUIS.:  Nantes Fantasia .
London , C. Jeffreys. c 1869 . With a superb colour lithograph by Packer & Griffin of the Cathedral of Nantes within the walled city and in the foreground a river scene. In a series by Dupuis entitled Cathedral Gems and based upon Mozart's 12th Mass. Sadly the composer Louis Dupuis is relatively obscure save that on the back page of some previous sheets there were lists of two groups of published works with reviews dated October and December 1874. On the back of this are dated reviews of another composers work these dated 1868 and so a suggested date of 1869 seems a reasonable supposition. The lithographer Thomas Packer who died in 1897 was particularly famous for the skies in his art work and it earned him the nickname of-Graduated tint Packer because he invented a process that allowed great subtlety in moonlight, sunsets and clouds and these are fine examples. Folio size with music. Condition VG.
