| FLECHE A.: The Count of Paris (Or Louvre Quadrilles). London ,Jeffreys & Nelson. c 1842. With a monochrome portrait of the Louis Philippe Albert D'Orleans Comte de Paris ( heir to the French Throne) as young child by John Brandard and printed by M & N Hanhart. From a painting by Winterhalter. Dedicated to Louis Philippe, the King of the French. Sadly the composer remains obscure, although there is a short note on the bottom that indicates that he composed a number of popular Quadrilles & Waltzes for the publishers. The composer Sydney Nelson(1800-1862) entered into a songwriting partnership with Charles Jeffreys around 1840 and soon afterwards they began a music publishing business. By 1843, Nelson had decided to leave the publishing to Jeffreys whilst he toured America, Canada and Australia. Jeffreys went on to make a considerable success of the publishing. The superb monochrome illustrated front cover is by John Brandard (1812-1863) who specialised in Waltz,Polka covers and mainly ballet and opera covers. He worked extensively with Michael and Nicholas Hanhart to produce these opulent sheets. Folio size with music. | ARNE THOMAS A.: Rule Britannia. London,Musical Bouquet of High Holborn . (c 1850) No 58 . With a stirring ¾ portrait of Britannia flanked by a sailor and a marine and with a man o’war in the background. Performed by Jullien’s Band, the French Guide’s Band and the Band’s of the Grenadier & Coldstream Guards. .This series commenced around 1846 and was the combined idea of James Bingley and William Strange and operated from 192 High Holborn and they blatantly pirated material from other publishers in the days before the establishment of copyright and Stationers Hall. This early sheet is just such an example. Nevertheless the front cover is stylish enough and may well be an Alfred Ashley front cover. Around 1850 Chas Sheard had replaced William Strange and indeed had taken over James Bingley's investment and under his control, the Musical Bouquet continued until 1889 and ran to almost 9,000 individual pieces of music. Folio size with music. Well used along the outer edge not affecting else condition good/very good. An excellent front cover and of course a very famous song by Arne which was originally written in 1740 for the masque Alfred in honour of the Princess of Brunswicks birthday and to commemorate the accession of George 1 € (euro) 22.00 [Appr.: US$ 32.96 | £UK 20 | JP¥ 2911] Book number: 1056 Click here to order or inquire at Olde Musick & Cokery Books. | ||

At the head of the portrait the imperial eagle in gold with two tricolour flags below it's open wings and at each corner the Imperial insignia N and the composer titles in blue and gold and though not signed, certainly a wonderful Brandard cover. The composer Adolphe Schubert who worked extensively for this publisher sadly remains obscure. The music publisher Leoni Lee went into partnership with Coxhead in 1845 until 1853 . Folio size with music. Trimmed across the top title and a small waterstain in bottom spine corner neither overly affecting magnificent portrait and cover else Good. € (euro) 65.00 [Appr.: US$ 97.37 | £UK 58.75 | JP¥ 8601] Book number: 3772 Click here to order or inquire at Olde Musick & Cokery Books. | ||

Stanley(1841-1904). Livingstone was a curious combination of missionary, doctor, explorer, scientist and anti-slavery activist. He spent 30 years in Africa, exploring almost a third of the continent, from its southern tip almost to the equator and he was found when thought lost, by Henry M. Stanley after a year of searching. Sadly the lyric writer William Henderson remains obscure. The composer Alexander Reichardt (1825-85) was a Hungarian born tenor singer and composer who from 1851 until a few years before his death regularly appeared in Britain. He settled in Boulogne and died there in 1885.The publisher Amos Weekes was previously with Beale & Co and started his business in 1869 and was at this address until 1880.Folio with music.
