LINDAHL ALBERT.:  Alma a Battle Piece.
London, Jullien & Co late 1854. A superb sepia illustrated front cover by John Brandard which shows the Russian guns on top of the Heights of Alma and the hand to hand fighting by French, English and Scottish troops against the massed troops of Russia, moving up the hill.Whilst more troops gather in the valley below. This first major battle of the Crimean war was fought out on 20th September 1854. The composer Albert Lindahl remains somewhat obscure though here composing for Jullien in the mid 1850's and he composed a Nocturne for Chappell's in the late 1890's and again in the mid 1850's Chappell's published a series 'Eight Favourite Melodies'. The Royal Academy of Music collection holds The Water Nymph from that series and they date it 1856. GAUL ALFRED.:  The Crusaders March.
London, Augener & Co. (c1870's). With a monochrome halfpage monochrome illustrated cover by Alexandre Laby. Alfred R. Gaul (1837 and post 1893) was born in Norwich and in 1863 acquired his Mus B.A. at Cambridge.Thereafter he worked as an organist and composer mainly around Birmingham and the Midlands of England. The sheet music illustrator Laby (1814- 1899) was basically a religious painter of some note and his prolific period was during the 1850's.It is likely that this sheet dates from a little after that time because the publishers Augener were located at Palace Place between 1865-73 and that helps to date this piece somewhat.Folio size with music. GRACE HENRY C.:  The Pekin' March
London, W. Paxton. c 1903. With a full colour lithograph front cover, by Michael Hanhart, of two European officers on horseback, by a pagoda and watching a march past of troops.Originally I had thought that it relates to the Russo- Japanese War which had it's roots in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-5 which was fought over the control of Korea, nominally a tributary state of China at the time. China lost all battles on land and at sea as Japanese expansion began in theimmediate area and which then continued to envelope the wider region with the Russo- Japanese war of 1904-5. However after conversations with Christina Whiteley. it may in fact relate to the Boxer Rebellion which reached it's climax in 1900 in Beijing which was then known as Peking or Pekin and the 8 foreign powers and a force of 2,500 men was sent to relieve the small group of foreign diplomats and their tiny garrison of troops from the Boxer's threat inside Pekin' . The composer Henry C. Grace remains obscure though he did publish a Royal March and Waltz for the 1902 Coronation of King Edward and both were for Paxton's. The date of publication indicates the probable connection with the Russo-Japanese war. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

SWEELEY CHAS C. & LINCOLN HARRY J. ( ARR.):  Repasz Band March.
London, The Frederick Harris Co. c early 1900's. With a colour lettered cover and with a monochrome photograph of the Band of the H.M. Irish Guards. The edition was dedicated to Charles Hassell the Bandmaster of the Irish Guards. This edition says composed by Chas Sweeley and arranged by Harry J. Lincoln. The Instrumentalist magazine writes , "The 'Repasz Band March' is the second most played march in the world, exceeded in number of performances only by Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever." The article continues 'the original 1901 piano copy, the advertising from the early 1900s, and recordings by such bands as Emerson Military, Prince's, Prior's, and Vessella's all list Sweeley as the composer. . . .Recent documentation discovered by John Hunsinger in his research, including a sworn affidavit and copyright application, indicates more strongly that Lincoln may have actually been the composer.' Whoever is the composer, this copy acknowledges both parties. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

DESORMES L.C.:  En Revenant de la Revue( the Celebrated Boulanger March)
London, Lafleur & Son. c.mid 1880's. With an ornate lettered cover . Sub titled, The Boulanger March and relates to the notable French General George Boulanger(1837-91) . The composer L.C. Desormes remains obscure. Boulanger had a period when he was very popular with the French public. He was made a brigadier-general in 1880 and in 1882 was appointed director of infantry at the war office, enabling him to make a name as a military reformer. It was as war minister that Boulanger gained public popularity. He introduced reforms for the benefit of soldiers and appealed to the French desire for revenge against Germany, for the defeat in the Franco Prussian war. His star continued to rise through the late 1880's and in 1888 he resigned his seat but a Boulangist movement was the talk of Paris and the General for President a real possibility. Within a year however his star waned and rumours of a coup encouraged the Government to charge him with treason. He fled to England and then in 1891 committed suicide. Condition VG .
