Composed expressly for and sung by Madame Sainton Dolby (1821-85) who married Prosper Sainton in 1860.The noted contralto often made a point of singing songs written by women composers or lyric writers as in this case. London, Enoch & Son (for the Daily Mail Newspaper). 1899. Folio with music. Monochrome lithograph cover of mainly an ornate frame of small flowers. Unsigned. The combination of the lyric/poem by Rudyard Kipling and the music of Sir Arthur Sullivan and the cause being to Aid the relief of the suffering of the wounded of the Boer War makes this a most unusual sheet and a noted sheet for that reason if not it's authors. Folio size with music. Condition very good.

No publishers details . c mid 1890's. I can find no further material on Boyton Smith although I understand that he also composed a fantasia on Sullivan's The Chieftan in the same decade and three carols in 1910. Lacking front and back covers though with a publisher's plate number of 18608. 12 pages of music. Disbound but otherwise in very Good condition. Rare

London, Metzler & co c . 1880's. With an ornate lettered cover . 8 pages of music . A 'Brilliant' Fantasia on the songs of the popular comic opera by Gilbert & Sullivan ran for 175 nights from 1877-78 . Brinley Richard (1817- 1885) According to Groves Music & Musicians,his most famous piece was his song -God Bless the Prince of Wales(1862) and he also composed songs for the 1846 Drury Lane Play- Crown Diamonds. According to popular sentiment and sheet music sales- Warblings at Eve was his best seller by far. F. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

The composer Charles Godfrey(1839-1919),the Bandmaster of the Royal Horse Guards until 1904 when he retired. The family Godfrey were hugely influential in providing musical accompaniment to the popular dances of the day.The Godfrey family were also hugely instrumental in developing symphonic as well as band music as more popular music forms in Britain. The publisher Valentine Metzler founded the company in 1816 and by the fourth generation they were publishing popular dances based upon successful shows such as HMS Pinafore. Folio size with music. He became very famous as a dancing master and moved to Newcastle upon Tyne. He wrote the standard work Ballroom Etiquette and a large number of Polkas, Quadrilles and Galops and the Sultan's Polka and the Edinburgh Quadrille were especially popular. London, Chappell & Co . c. 1875. With a colour lithograph by Thomas W. Lee of the classic scene from the one act dramatic cantata Trial by Jury and dedicated to the plaintiff in the piece, Nellie Bromley. The original cast played several fairly short runs between March and December 1875. Charles Louis D'Albert(1809-86) was the son of a French cavalry captain and was the major dance instructor in the middle years in British society. Folio size with music. Fractionally trimmed at top and bottom with very minimal effect else condition VG. Rare.

London, Metzler & Co. 1876. With a full colour lithograph cover by the Hanhart Brothers of a young chorister. Sung by Antoinette Sterling and also Miss Coyte Turne.In 1874 Cramer& Co. published a set of three songs by Sullivan including The First Departure, (words by Rev. E. Munroe) and it was re-published in 1876 by Metzler & Co., with new words by Frederick E. Weatherley (1848-1929) as The Chorister. In this form the song gained greater popularity. GROSSMITH GEORGE.:  An Awful Little Scrub
London, J. Bath .c1890. With a full colour front cover oval lithograph portrait of the topic of this notable song,signed by Alfred Concanen and written and sung by the noted G & S performer George Grossmith and also sung by Lionel Brough.George Grossmith(1847-1912) After minor acting and performance grossmith was hired to play in Gilbert & Sullivan's the Sorcerer and thereafter stayed with the company 12 years although he contued to undetake and perform his own songs as well. In 1889 he left the company and pursued his own career writing and performing his satirical material in Britain and America.Alfred Concanen is considered amongst the finest lithographic artists of the middle Victorian period. Folio size with music. Condition VG. Rare.

London , Hopwood & Crew .1882. With an unsigned colour lithograph of a large blue eye and with red lettered titles. Sung J.L. Toole in the noted musical farce Mr Guffin's Elopement. By Grossmith and Law which was a one act farce which highlighted the talents of J.L. Toole and was made notable by this song. Though first produced in 1882, this copy is hand dated 1884. Folio size with music. Condition VG Scarce.

BUCALOSSI PROCIDA::  The Mikado Valse.
London, Chappel & Co. c 1886. Folio with music. Pictorial colour lithograph cover illustrating the light opera by Gilbert & Sullivan, first performed in March 1885 and which ran for 700 performances. The front cover is signed GR and printed by the Hanhart Brothers and features the famous song-Three Little maids from School are We, set on a fan as well as an inset portrait of the two main characters, probably all portraits of the original performers. Procida Bucalossi(1832-1918) invariably undertook to write dances from famous shows. Folio size with music. Trimmed at the top edge for no loss and the bottom edge with slight loss to publishers address else condition very good. Very famous lithograph.

With a full colour cover by GR and printed by M&N Hanhart of the Mikado(Richard Temple) in those wonderful brown Liberty prints with cranes on the sleeves etc. The Gilbert & Sullivan light opera ran for 700 performances from March 1885 . Procida Bucalossi (1832-1918) specialized in dance versions based upon famous and popular shows by Gilbert and Sullivan and Farnie & Cellier's Dorothy which was the Gaiety's longest running hit musical of the 1890's.
