| AUBER, DANIEL .: Come Spanish Maidens (Galop). London, Leoni Lee. 1836. With an initialed 'CB', monochrome litho and printed by Graf & Soret, of a Spanish maiden and in the background Spanish couples dancing on a grassy bank and across the water a town. Daniel Francois Auber ( 1782-1871) wrote many operas of great merit between 1819-69 including Frau Diavalo (1830) and La Barcarolle (1845) as well as concertos and piano pieces. Rather falling out of favour after his death he was fiercely defended as a very fine composer of opera by Brown & Stratton in their 1886 book. The lyric is by the busy but anonymous L. Devereux. According to the Biographical Dictionary of Printers, Graf & Soret were only a partnership between 1832-6 and the publisher Leoni Lee moved to this address in 1836 and that helps to date the piece. The composer and music publisher John Barnett (1802-1890) only ran the business between 1829-31.A very early lithograph by both noted lithographers and printers. . Folio size with music. | BAYLY, THOMAS HAYNES.: Fly Away Pretty Moth. London ,Willis & Co 1827. With a ½ page monochrome lithograph illustration by W. Bartholemew and printed by Charles Hullmandel of a moth flying towards a lighted candle. Bayly(1797-1839) was a darling of the salons of the fashionable and wealthy in London and Bath especially in the 1820's .Bayly died taking the spa waters at Cheltenham and with much of his wealth depleted through bad investment advice. His reputation remains high even today. This song was sung by the actress/singer Mrs Harriett Waylett(1800-51) who made a good reputation for herself in the English provinces and later at Drury Lane to sing in Love In a Village. In 1826 she married George Alexander Lee, the composer and appeared in his Dublin theatre for a ten year period. We can precisely date the sheet through Neighbour & Tyson's work on plate numbers as Oct/November 1827. It has been suggested by Simpson in a Century of Ballads that I'd Rather be a Butterfly was the first British Lithograph illustrated cover and this was the follow up song by Bayly. | JEFFREYS, CHARLES & STRAUSS, JOHANN.: Our Ship Was Her Homeward Track. London, D'Almaine & Co. c 1835. With an unsigned but almost certainly John Brandard monochrome lithograph of three young women waving farewell at the quayside. This was certainly before Charles Jefferys began his own music publishing company in 1840 and probably about the time Strauss was in Britain. .Johann Strauss the Elder(1804-1849) First led a small Orchestra in 1826 and their playing and his waltzes took at first Austria and then German speaking Europe by storm through the next ten years. He was invited to tour the capitals of Europe from 1837 .In 1838 alone, he had played 72 concerts and innumerable balls in honour of the newly crowned Queen Victoria. This sheet on the cusp between Georgian and Victorian. Folio size with music. He was a son of the Italian-born composer Domenico Corri, and brother-in-law to Bohemian pianist and composer Jan Ladislav Dussek. Moving with the family to London in 1789, Philip Antony was composing vocal works by 1802, piano music by 1805, and chamber music (mostly for piano, harp, and flute) by 1808.During the years to follow, he was an active a composer for these mediums, producing over forty works; his piano works were published both in Britain and on the continent. During this time, Corri made other contributions to the musical life of London. In 1810, his extensive piano teaching method L'anima di musica was published. For its time, it was thelargest work of its kind produced in England, and remains a highly valuable guide to the interpretation of the piano music of his time. This item number 4 in the series, is an intro and rondo on a theme by Thomas Arne. P. Antony Corri was born in Edinburgh in 1784. They appear in singing pose in the foreground and in the background are groups of performers dancing by the shore and further away the sails of fishing boats The French composer Daniel Auber ( 1782-1871) wrote many operas of great merit between 1819-69 including Masaniello(1828) Frau Diavalo (1830) and La Barcarolle (1845) as well as concertos and piano pieces. Rather falling out of favour after his death he was fiercely defended as a very fine composer of opera by Brown & Stratton in their 1886 book. This song adaptation for the Theatre Royal, London by Richard Ryan, who in 1830 wrote the lyric My Bark shall Tempt the Seas No More, though otherwise obscure and probably added this to Playwright James Kenny translation the opera from the French. | DUNOIS, M.: Quadrille a la Sontag Or Dunois Eleventh Set. London, Mori & Lavenu . late 1828 . Artwork signed but indistinct and printed by Englemann,Graf,Coinder & Co , of Mademoiselle Sontag in the Swiss Family, singing and watering her flowers whilst in the background a young man plays from atop the steps of a house , amidst the mountains and waterfalls. Sadly the arranger M. Dunois remains obscure though he was undoubtedly a dancing master . Henriette Gertrude Walpurgis Sontag( 1806-54). She caused considerable enthusiasm due to her beauty and fine soprano voice and after many European successes appeared at the King's Theatre London in 1828. She married Count Rossi in 1830 and retired only to reappear in 1849-51. She visited the USA in 1852 and died in Mexico in 1854. We can date the sheet precisely thanks to Neighbour & Tyson's work on plate numbers to late 1828. Morris or composer Henry Russell. Seen from the point of view of the cabman's horse, and at the end of the Georgian period witty songs and parodies were much in vogue. Folio size with music. | VON ESCH, L.: The King of Prussia's Welcome to England( Waltz & Variations). London , Goulding, D'Almaine & Potter. 1811-16. With an ornate engraved front cover of an oblong shaped frame and at the bottom small musical instruments and inset the titles of the series and at the head a large representation of the Prince of Wales's Crest, the Fleur de Lys, set in a wreath of oak leaves and with garlands of flowers either side. Only fragmentary information is available on Louis Von Esch the composer of this Waltz. He later composed a Divertimento which introduces Mary's Dream and also Waltz(a la Pandour). He has also composed a March in B flat (five hands) and in 1793 his music selling business in Pimlico was declared bankrupt. He does not appear in Smith and Humphries as a music seller. He also appears to have composed the music for the Hymn, Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus. He was nevertheless at this time suitably important enough to compose for Goulding, D'Almaine and Potter who were by appointment music sellers to the Prince and Princess of Wales, hence the front cover. Sung by Miss Stephens and Madame Vestris at the Theatre Royal ,Drury Lane in Hofer the Tell of the Tyrol arranged and adapted by Henry R. Bishop and performed in 1830. A rare and early piece printed by one of the great music printing companies of London that began in 1803 and continued at least until 1946. | DARLEY, GEORGE & PHIPPS, T.B.: The Cuckoo Bee ( My Lady Come with Me). London , Mori & Lavenu . June 1828. With a ½ page monochrome lithographic illustration by Whitlock & Goodman of a lady, dressed in eastern clothes, in a tropical garden by a river and in the background a waterfall and an ornate bridge and further back high mountains. In the foreground are some tropical flowers. It is Florettas song from 'Sylvia or the May Queen' a dramatic romance by George Darley(1795-1846) born in Dublin, who spent most of his adult life in London. Sylvia or the May Queen was first published in 1827 and then staged, as a pastoral verse drama. It was not enormously successful, yet the songs still appear in Victorian and other verse anthologies. Composer, T.B. Phipps was the author of Songs from the Sea Side for the London publisher Wybrow, else remains obscure. The plate number 2322 can be dated as June 1828 and is a very early monochrome lithographed cover by Whitlock & Goldman. Folio size with music. John remains obscure The Honourable Mrs Norton and Lady Dufferin(who wrote the Irish Emigrant) were sisters and Grand-daughters of the playwright Sheridan, he of- School for Scandal, fame. They and their sister were known in the 1820's as the Three Graces and were renowned for their talent and beauty and I feel it is likely that the cover is a representation of these sisters. With a monochrome ½ page portrait of a young nobleman helping a lady into a gondola by the quayside with a garden and a large house in the background and Venice behind the gondola. Unsigned but likely to be a very early John Brandard. Number 1 of a group of Songs of the Gondola.Charles Jefferys(1807-65) wrote the lyrics to many notable songs such as Mary of Argyle but his most lasting song is Rose of Allandale. He began his music publishing business in 1835 .The composer L. Devereaux is somewhat obscure though he did arrange the Maltese Boatman's Song for Firth Ponds of New York between 1832-47. Whether he was a later relation of the noted Robert Devereaux(1567-1601) the Earl of Essex, Queens Elizabeth's favourite I am unable to say. . Folio size with music. | ZERBINI, L. & THE LADY OF A NOBLE DUKE.: The Corsairs Bride. London, W. Wybrow.c mid 1830's. With a wonderful monochrome lithograph by Maxim Gauci of a young woman in a cave on a small island watching a battle between two ships, one flying the Turkish flag. Sung by Madame Eliza Vestris ( 1797-1856) actress and contralto, also Miss Bartolozzi. In 1830 Louisa Sidney Stanhope wrote a novel, The Corsair's Bride based on a 16th century legend and previously the Sans Pareil Theatre(later Adelphi) in London mounted The Corsair's Bride; or, The Valley of Mount Etna, by Planche, saw 21 performances in the 1821-2 season. Clearly there was an interest in the subject. L. Zerbini the composer was a regular composer for Wybrow, though no details about him remain. Reinforced down the outside edge with paper, many years ago, some insect spotting along top edge not affecting lithograph.Folio with music. | HOLST M.: The Cottage Rondo . London , G.Walker, c 1810. With a centred 1/3 page engraved monochrome illustration of a man talking to a woman at her cottage ½ door surrounded by trees and vegetation. The man could well be a tinker as he has a pack on his back. 5pp of music. The composer was Matthias Von Holst , the great Grandfather of composer Gustave Holst( 1874-1934) who settled in England in 1807 from Scandinavia. Both he and his son married English women. He has a list of 21 items advertised on the back page as published by Walker and the Cottage Rondo is listed first and is likely to have been his first major piece published. He published the Village Rondo in around 1812,which had the earliest known cover depicting cricket on it in c.1812 and that piece is not listed on this back cover hence the suggested publishing date of c 1810, though it may be earlier. | CLANCY E.M(ARR.).& J.S.KNOWLES.: The March of Malachi. Dublin Pigott & Sherwin c 1827-9. With a superb monochrome engraving, by Gray & Son of Glasgow, of Malachi and the soldiers of his army coming upon the camp of the opposing army. The army of Malachi are carrying a flag with an ornate Irish harp and what could well be clover as a banner. The arranger a Miss E.M. Clancy , who sadly remains obscure, dedicated her arrangement to her illustrious countryman Daniel O'Connell Esq.M.P. and the words are by J.S. Knowles .James Sheridan Knowles (1784-1862), Irish dramatist and actor, was born in Cork, and was cousin to Richard Brinsley Sheridan( Knowles). His chief plays, which are noted for their professional, workmanlike construction, include the tragedies Virginius (1820) and William Tell (1825) and the comedies The Hunchback (1832) and The Beggar of Bethnal Green (1834). The piece is signed with initials along the bottom edge by the arranger Clancy. With a ¼ page illustration by Lee of an army led by two knights on horseback towards an opposing army of eastern soldiers and behind them, the walled city they defended. Also the notable logo of the copper type printers, Clowes appears on the bottom. 21st edition. The plate number 984 can be dated early 1830. Mrs Felicia Dorothea Hemans (1793-1835) was one of the most popular poets of her age and she's especially famous for a folio of lyrics entitled the Peninsula Melodies published by Goulding and D'Almaine soon after the Spanish Peninsular was liberated from Napoleon. | MORRIS, GEORGE P. & RUSSELL ,HENRY: Woodman Spare That Tree. London W .Wybrow c 1837. Ornate lettered cover. The words were by General George P. Morris a New Yorker transplanted from Philadelphia and a noted publisher of The Mirror,New Mirror and the Home Journal but the real star was Henry Russell(1812-1900) born in England and responsible for many fine songs and performance breakthroughs. He lived in America from 1833-41 as a touring concert performer and it was here that he wrote this song in 1837.This is a very early London printing in London. Kilgarriff quotes the first British edition as published by J. Lawson (1837) and I would suspect Wybrow to be very quickly after that. Folio size with music.
