MACLURE ALFRED.:  The Violets Quadrilles.
London, D'Almaine & Co .1839-40 With an unsigned colour lithograph of an ornamental trellis work and with the titles set inside a central paler area and surrounded by violets. Sadly there is only limited information on the composer Maclure who as well as being a teacher of piano forte, Alfred Maclure was a music seller in Elgin Place 203 Sauchiehall Street Glasgow in 1849. Additionally the Scottish publisher William Mitchison was only at this address between 1849-50 and hence the suggested date of publication. Folio size with music. Small stain in center of lettering else condition VG.

London, Hammond. Hand dated 1886. Folio with music. Pictorial colour lithograph cover of the important early rose by Robert Home & Maconald whose work is rather rare. Enos Andrew wrote Marechal Niel,Gloire de Dijon Waltz and Queenie but that apart is obscure. This sheet was imported into Australia and is hand dated 1886.Slightly trimmed to remove publishers imprint else VG .

OLMA CARL.:  Chere Amie Valse.
London, B. Williams.c mid 1880's. With a full colour lithographic front cover of groups of pink and blue flowers by Stannard & Son. Sadly the composer Carl Olma remains obscure. The publishers Benjamin Williams were located at that address only between 1883-94 and this for a second stint as this sheet was bought in Adelaide South Australia and collated in a folio in 1888. The publisher Williams had died in 1876 and his widow Mary Ann took on the business until she too died in 1882. It then passed to their two daughters who after litigation had forced Lucy Mullen to pay Mrs Hadley £25,000 for the business. Thereafter keeping the name, Fredrick and Lucy Mullen continued the business until 1894. Folio size with music. Condition very good .

LOWTHIAN CAROLINE.:  Fahrwohl Valse.
London, Chappell & Co. c 1870's . With an unsigned colour lithograph cover of multitudes of a tiny white flower with dark centers, possibly the name of the flower is Fahrwohl . Caroline Lowthian was a prolific composer of dance pieces including the Marguerite and Swallows Waltzes, Old Love and the New Waltz ,The Vanity Fair Polka ,The Mother Hubbard Polka,The Black and Tan Polka and the Venetia Waltz. She is mentioned briefly in Brown & Stratton's British Musical Biography as a composer of dance tunes and a ballet and also by her married name Mrs Cyril A. Prescott. Folio size with music. Condition worn along the spine with remnants of tape and also less worn along other edges else fair/Good.

DRANE JOSEPH CHADLEY.:  The Moss Rose Schottische.
London, Weippert & Co. c 1870. Folio with music. With a lovely full colour lithograph cover by Stannard & Dixon of a frame of rose leaves and inside the titles and then an oval frame of rose leaves and then centred the Moss Rose itself. The composer Joseph Chadley Drane is sadly obscure though he also sold his piece of music from his home in Liverpool. There were two other Moss Rose titles in 1845 & 1852,that I know of and the rose colour was white and both were songs. Here is a slightly later version and the Moss Rose is a light purple. Condition VG .

D'ALBERT CHARLES .:  D'albert's Bride's Varsovianna.
London, Chappell & Co. c mid 1860's. With a charming colour lithograph by John Brandard and printed by the Hanhart's of a frame of many daisy like flowers and ears of corn providing a frame for the gold inset titles. Brandard (1812-1863) specialised in Waltz, Polka covers and worked extensively with Michael and Nicholas Hanhart to produce these opulent sheets. Written by Charles D'Albert(1809-1886)although born in Germany, his father was a French Cavalry captain and upon his death, D'Albert and his mother decamped to England. He became very famous as a dancing master and moved to Newcastle upon Tyne. He wrote the standard work Ballroom Etiquette and a large number of Polkas, Quadrilles and Galops and the Sultan's Polka and the Edinburgh Quadrille were especially popular. Folio size with music. Strengthened along outer edge of the back of cover so to no effect else VG.

GODFREY DAN.:  Holly Bush Polka.
London Francis Bros & Day. 1877-81. With a full colour lithograph cover by William Spalding of a wreath of holly and at the bottom some ivy with the title in part above the wreath and the word polka in the center and the titles also below. Dan Godfrey (1831-1903) entered the Royal Academy of Music in 1847 and became Professor of Military Music there. Appointed Bandmaster of the Grenadier Guards in 1856 and in 1896 formed his own band. He was at the time of this sheet already bandmaster of the Grenadier Guards. Folio size with music. Trimmed slightly at the top to lose minor information and also at the bottom to do same else condition VG

London ,Addison & Hollier. c1852. With a coloured lettered cover and ornate frames. Sadly the composer James Ernest Perring and indeed Lt. Colonel Addison remain obscure, although it is highly likely that the lyric writer Addison was related to the publisher. The publisher Robert Addison and John Hollier went into partnership only from 1851-6 after which they added a further partner. Folio size with music.Condition VG.

CARPENTER J.E. & BARKER GEORGE.:  Why Do Summer Roses Fade.
London, Robert Cocks .c 1850's. With a charming colour lithograph cover of a grouping of pink roses by the Leighton Brothers . Sung by and dedicated to Miss Andrews. Joseph Edward Carpenter(died 1885) was a highly successful lyricist working with many of the major composers of the day George Barker(1812-1876) was a noted tenor singer of the day as well as a composer of music whose most famous song was probably the Irish Emigrant .The lithographer was Charles Blair Leighton(1823-1855) a noted early Victorian Portrait and Landscape painter with several pictures exhibited at the Royal Academy and he was a partner in the printing firm that not only printed this sheet but also from 1858 until 1884 they printed the Illustrated London News.As the lithographer/artist died in 1855 this sheet is almost certainly prior to that dateFolio size with music..Condition VG.

CARPENTER J.E. & GLOVER STEPHEN.:  Winter Evergreens.
London Duff & Hodgson. c 1854. With a superb colour lithograph by Thomas Packer of ivy, holly and miseltoe in a frame and inset a silver background and wintry white and black lettering for the main title. Joseph Edwardes Carpenter (died 1885) also wrote with Stephen Glover - Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still and also wrote with his brother C.W Glover both of whom are classic Victorian drawing room ballad composers. Stephen Glover (1813-1870) who wrote upwards of 1,500 compositions,was also noted for his marches at the time of the Crimean War and as well as Alma and Sebastopol Marches. He wrote Prince Albert Band March, which in 1851 sold 98,000 Folio size with music. Small old paper repair on top quarter of the outside edge and slightly ribbed along spine else condition VG. Exceptional winter cover.

ROSE FABIAN.:  Ivy Waltz.
London, Phillips & Page. 1884-90. With a full colour lithograph cover by GR featuring a head & shoulders portrait of a young woman with an ivy bough in the foreground. The composer Rose remains somewhat obscure although he did compose 2 waltzes and a Polka for the publishers. The publishers were only at this address between 1884-90 and that helps to date the piece. Folio size with music. Tip of one letter of title trimmed and the publishers imprint at bottom else condition VG.

London, J.H. Larway .1901. With a lovely 'art nouveau' lithographed cover printed by the Oppenheimer Bros of Leipzig with yellow flowers on green stems framing the titles set in a red frame . Sadly the composer and lyric writer remain obscure. Joseph Henry Larway published many songs by Hamilton Gray and piano music by Theo Bonheur during this period up to 1920. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

HOWARD FRANK.:  Pansy Blossom.
Cincinnati, John Church & Co and also Root & Sons of Chicago .( hand dated 1883). With a colour lithograph cover , unsigned, of a bunch of pansies inset between the titles. Frank Howard was one of the performers in Thatcher, Primrose and West’s Minstrels and indeed dedicated the song to W. H. West , one of the partners running the troupe which according to Sigmund Spaeth delighted in calling itself the Mammoth Minstrel Troupe. Spaeth adds, that Eben Rexford ( he of Silver Threads among the Gold) supplied the words to Frank Howard’s waltz to turn this tune into a favourite but melancholy flower song of 1883. Folio size with music. paper strip down top of spine and signs of early foxing along outer edge where there is a repaired tear which enters the edge of lithograph else condition good.

LINLEY GEORGE & LEDUC A.:  The Village Flower Girl.
London, Robert Cock, c mid 1850's. With a colour lithograph cover by Stannard & Dixon of the Village Flower Girl at her stall. The composer Alphonse Leduc(1804-68) wrote the very famous Jenny of the Mill. He was born in Nantes and wrote a very considerable number of dance tunes and also composed for the organ and the bassoon. the lyricist is George Linley (1798-1865). Originally born in Leeds and moved to London as young man. He wrote some of the most popular drawing room lyrics of the mid 19th century-Ever of Love ofThee,I cannot mind my Wheel,mother.He wrote several operas between 1850-65 and later books of Nursery Rhymes and Hymn Tunes. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

DE BOUTVILLE GERALD.:  Home Flowers Polka Mazourka.
London, John Blockley. c late1870's. With an unsigned colour lithograph set in an oval frame of many coloured flowers. The composer De Boutville remains obscure except that he also wrote Bridal bells Mazurka and the Aurora Floyd Galop almost certainly for the publisher John Blockley.Folio size with music. Trimmed slightly through top of title and neat old repair across lithograph, from the inside back, so barely noticeable, else Good.

JEFFREYS & GLOVER.:  The Spanish Flower Girl Song(the Greenwood).
Boston , Geo.P. Reed of Tremont Row .(late 1840’s). With a lovely monochrome lithograph portrait of a Spanish flower girl. Charles Jeffreys was a noted lyricist/publisher , he died in 1865. Charles Glover(1806-63) was the violinist at Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theatres and Musical Director of the Queens Theatre London. He also wrote the noted song the Rose of Tralee(1850) and was hugely popular in America during this period. According to Dichter and Shapiro the publisher Reed was only known as Geo. P. and located at this address between 1839-49. Folio size with music. Condition very good.

FITZGERALD W.H.:  The Festive Season Polka.
London, John Blockley. c. 1870. With an extremely bright colour lithograph by Thomas Packer of a dark blue lake like background that gradually lightens and the titles are brown tree letters with clumps of snow and ice on them and their pattern reflects under the blue lake. In 1900 in New York the Victor Herbert operetta The Viceroy was stage managed by a W. H Fitzgerald, it is possible he was the composer other than that Fitzgerald remains obscure. The publisher John Blockley(1800-82).One of a number of composer/ publishers in the middle and later nineteenth century it has been said of Blockley that he ransacked the poetry of Longfellow and particularly Tennyson even before the ink was dry on the paper and certainly the two men made money out of the songs of the Charge of the Light Brigade and Ring out Wild Bells. Thomas Packer (died 1897) who specialised in gradual skies such as sunsets. Folio size with music. Fractional trimming not affecting else condition Good. Vibrant cover and still with the remnants of 'glitter' that was sprinkled by hand and secured by glue onto theedge of the letters.

BROUGHAM JOHN (ARR. COOTE ) .:  The Bob-O-Link Polka.
London, Hopwood & Crew. Hand dated 1871. With a charming oval colour lithograph of probably the female Bobolink as she sits close to her nest. 'The female Bobolink is similar to the Grasshopper Sparrow but is larger and has streaked flanks'. The bird is native to North America.The original composer was John Brougham (1814-80) a Dublin born Irish American actor and dramatist who played several seasons in London in the 1860's after making his reputation in America. He wrote over 100 plays. Arranged by Charles Coote Snr. Played at Mellon's concerts. Alfred Mellon(1820-67) he started as a violinist and then quickly moved to the leader of the Royal Italian Opera Covent Garden and then Director of Music at two further theatres before joining the Harrison Pyne Opera Company which in 1859 produced his opera Victorine. He was also a major promenade concert conductor. Folio size with music. Some light spotting and trimmed along the bottom to lose the publishers imprint else condition Good.

BENNETT MRS. CROUCH F.N.:  The White Moss Rose.
London ,D'Almaine & Co .(1845) . With a lovely monochrome lithograph portrait by G.B. Black ,of a young woman holding a rose and standing in the formal garden of a large house . Magnificent detail and very reminiscent of Brandard at his best.F. Nicholls Crouch(1808-96) is probably most noted for the song Kathleen Mavourneen, though his output throughout the middle years of the century was prodigious. Mrs Bennett sadly remains obscure. We can precisely date the sheet through Neighbour & Tyson's work on plate numbers . Folio size with music.Small waterstain top edge else VG.

CASTLING & PETHER.:  Wildflower( Hide Me from the Dragon-Fly).
London , Francis,Day & Hunter . 1908. With a colour lithograph cover of a dargon fly swooping on some flowers by the later lithographic artist Sidney Kent and printed by H.G. Banks. The writer,Harry Castling (1865-1933) wrote the Music Hall classics-Don't have any more Mrs Moore,Let's all go down the Strand and Just like the Ivy I'll cling to you. Henry Petther’s most memorable Music Hall composition was Waiting at the Church for Vesta Victoria.This is very much a change of direction for both the writers and publishers. Folio size with music. Small piece missing from bottom edge not affecting and small tear on top edge repaired. large tear on back page not affecting contents and stitching down spine. Condition good.

London, Robert Cocks. c 1860's. With a a full colour lithograph illustration of a young girl carrying wheat in a wheat field by T.G. Cooper who was an Ensign in the 3rd London Volunteer Rifles. The composer was a Captain R. Lincoln Cocks of the 3rd London Volunteer Rifles and the 1st edition proceeds, were devoted to the Funds of the regiment by the publisher Robert Cocks, who was undoubtedly related to the composer. Folio size with music. Condition VG
