ALLAN EUPHEMIA AMELIA.:  The Dream of the Future.
London , No publisher available. c 1870's. With a full colour lithograph by Richard Childs and printed by J. hardy of High Holborn of a young girl asleep and being watched over by two angels and inset a portrait of the girl some years on and with a laurel wreath over her head and what looks like a star above it. The composer Euphemia Amelia Allan remains steadfastly obscure. The lithographer/artist Richard Childs worked mainly from the late 1860's up until 1880 but little was known after that point except that he died in hospital of a wrecked constitution - usually blamed on drink. Folio size with music A little worn and brittle along the outer edge and trimmed to lose publishers imprint else good.

FRICKER ANNE & MYLNE MISS.:  I Built a Bridge of Fancies.
London ,Robert Cocks & Co . 1863 . Ornate lettered titles +4pp of music. The lyric writer Miss Mylne remains obscure, however . Anne Fricker (married name Mogford) was born in 1820 and was certainly alive in 1897.Her first song was published in 1839 and one of her most notable songs Dinna Ye Hear ( Jessie of Lucknow) which was her 6th published piece was based on the same story as Campbell & Blockley's Jessie's Dream. In all she wrote almost 40 songs and some piano compositions too according to Brown & Stratton. Condition VG.

FRICKER ANNE.:  Fading Away.
London, Robert Cocks. 1879. Ornate lettered cover + 5pp of music. The composer and lyric writer Anne Fricker (married name Mogford) was born in 1820 and was certainly alive in 1897.Her first song was published in 1839 and one of her most notable songs Dinna Ye Hear ( Jessie of Lucknow) which was her 6th published piece was based on the same story as Campbell & Blockley's Jessie's Dream. In all she wrote almost 40 songs and some piano compositions, too , according to Brown & Stratton. This copy has a hand written date of January 1879. Condition VG .

London ,Keith,Prowse .c 1850 . Ornate lettered cover Folio size with music. Mrs Blackwood(1807-67) who was the elder sister to Hon Mrs Norton( the first great female Victorian lyric writer) and she became Lady Dufferin in 1839 when her husband succeeded his father and they moved to Ireland where she like her sister achieved great fame . Condition mainly VG though some of cover lettering a trifle worn .

JACOBS-BOND CARRIE.:  My Soul.
London Fredrick Harris 1909. With an unsigned coloured cover of brown in the lower part of cover and containing the titles and then full colour for the words of the song and a large flower in the top left corner. Carrie Jacobs-Bond(1863-1947) set up her own publishing company in Chicago and proceeded to be immensely successful. In 1901 she wrote Just a Wearyin for You, A Perfect day (1910) and this song a year earlier. Folio size with music. Condition Good.

HORN CHARLES & CRAWFORD MRS.:  The Beautiful Daughters of Spain.
London, D'Almaine .1847. Charles Edward Horn (1786-1849).The noted composer of Cherry Ripe and Mrs Crawford seemingly the original lyric writer of Kathleen Mavourneen and according again to Basil Walsh, possibly Crouch's first wife ( Mavourneen's composer).It is possible to definately date this sheet through Neighbour & Tyson's work on music plate numbers and this number was published in 1847. Sadly the lyric writer Charlotte Young remains obscure however W.T Wrighton(1816-1880) was a prolific early Victorian composer."Mr Wrighton is par excellence,the Ballad Music writer of the day"- said Court Circular and the publisher Robert Cocks advertises almost 60 of his songs on the back cover of another song. Folio size with music Thanks to the work of Neighbour & Tyson on publisher's plate numbers ,we can date this accurately to Mid year 1847.Condition VG .

London, Boosey & Co . c 1880. With an unsigned colour lithograph front cover of the badge of the 2nd Sussex Regiment and above, the title, framed in swirls of small flowers. Dedicated to the Colonel and Officers of the same regiment by the composer. Sadly Mrs Wardropper does not appear in any of the reference books. The publishers Boosey moved to this address in 1874 until 1930. Folio size with music. Slightly trimmed to no loss else condition very good.

COOK ELIZA & BLOCKLEY JOHN.:  Many Happy Returns of the Day.
London Cramer Beale & Co c mid 1850's. With an ornate monochrome lithograph of small flowers making a frame for the titles. It is also entitled a Birth-Day Song. The lyrics of writer Eliza Cook was often set to music by Henry Russell, notably the Old Armchair during the early and middle years of Victoria's reign. She was also popular with John Blockley (1801-1882),the publisher was himself a highly successful composer to the poetry of Tennyson and Longfellow and upon occasions able to sell his compositions to other publishers as in this case. The publishers were located at this address between 1844 and 1856 after which London postal addresses were divided into suburbs. Folio size with music Condition VG.

MASSON ELIZABETH & REV'D I.W.:  When the Merry Crowds Assemble.
London Mori & Lavenu mid 1836. Scottish born Elizabeth Masson (1806-65) was a composer, contralto and teacher. She was taught singing by Mrs Henry Smart and the opera singer Pasta in Italy and sang in the Ancient Concerts for 12 years. She helped found the Royal Society of Female Musicians. Her Original Jacobite Songs(1839) were popular as were her individual songs many composed from the mid 1830 on. By the early 1840's she had effectively retired from performance and was mainly composing and teaching. Folio size with music Thanks to the work of Neighbour & Tyson on publisher's plate numbers ,we can date this accurately to 1836. Condition VG.

FARE FLORENCE.:  A City By the Sea Waltz.
London, Cary & Co . 1890's . With an unsigned colour lithograph, of a young woman standing by a stone staircase and looking out across the water at a gondola. Lithograph printed by Hawker & Sons. Based upon a popular song by Gerald Lane and presumably the same title. It would appear to have been copyrighted in America with the Oliver Ditson company and published in London by Cary almost certainly in the mid/late 1890's. A previous owner has included another piece of music by the anonymous Florence Fare entitled Meadow Sweet and pinned the music inside the inner sheets of music.Folio size with music The publishers were located at these addresses between 1894-1917. Folio size with music. Somewhat stained along top edge and tape along spine else fair/Good.

PERCY FLORENCE & LESLIE ERNEST .:  Rock Me to Sleep Mother.
Boston ,Russell & Patee .1860 . With an ornate printers frame and inset the titles First published by J.M. Russell in 1860 and This is a fiftieth edition although Rusell & Patee are only located at this address between 1860-1. The poem first appeared in the Philadelphia Saturday Evening Post under the name of Elizabeth Akers for May 1860. Several claims of authorship have been made, but the most serious was the one of Alexander M.W. Ball. According to Dichter & Shapiro this was the version that attained great popularity and propelled it into their list of Famous American songs.Folio size with music. ALLITSEN FRANCES & HAY JOHN COLONEL.:  When the Boys Come Home.
London Boosey & Co c 1901. Ornate lettered cover The lyric by Colonel John Hay . and music by Frances Allitsen( 18148-1912) born Mary Bumpus. Her songs were immensely popular, particularly like this one in a patriotic vein. This is likely to be towards the end or signalling the end of the Boer War and her own favourite singers performed these songs including Clara Butt and Hayden Coffin. Later she branched out into song cycles and towards the later years a musical drama in two scenes.Folio size with music Condition VG.

BAYLY MRS H.( ARR. NELSON S.):  The Fair Puritan.
Philadephia ,Fiot Meignon & Co .( c 1837) . with a monochrome half page lithograph by Lehman & Duval of a cavalier soldier talking to a Puritan woman in a wood panelled room. Used by Bellini in his noted opera Il Puritani. The composer is likely to to be the wife of the noted songwriter Haynes Bayly though sadly she remains obscure. Bayly(1797-1839) was a darling of the salons of the fashionable and wealthy in London and Bath especially in the 1820's. The publishers Fiot & Meignon dissolved their partnership in 1839 and both continued to publish seperately.This helps to firm the date of publication.Folio size with music.Condition VG.

PERCY HELEN & VAN NOORDEN P.E.:  I Breathe Thy Name.
London, Weippert & Co. c. late 1860's With an ornate lettered cover plus 4 pp of music.I am indebted to Kurt Ganzl for the following notes:' Helen Percy was a fairly successful concert singer in the early 1860s and Phineas Ezekiel van Noorden was a Jewish-Scots musician, teacher, composer, concert giver.Mrs Percy sang at a couple of his concerts in 1864.'The story of Nelson Weippert the publisher is sad one .He took over from his father who died in a coach crash and his brother and after only five years of sole publishing, his warehouse was destroyed by fire in 1873 with the loss of manuscripts and musical instruments and one year later the firm went bankrupt. Weippert emigrated to Australia where he ended his days in Misery and distress(Emily Soldene's Memoirs 1891). Initialed by the composer Condition VG .

BURNSIDE HELEN & LINDSAY MISS.:  Tired.
London Robert Cocks c 1876 Ornate lettered cover. A sacred song by Helen Burnside whose verse were set by Hope Temple and Mrs Worthington Bliss , two of the major names of late Victorian female music. Actually Miss M. Lindsay who was also Mrs J Worthington Bliss wrote the music for very famous Victorian poem and song -The Dove on the Cross and also the Hymn of the Moravian Nuns.In 1860 her publisher Robert Cocks gave her an exclusive contract and even as late as 1900 this first commercially succesful woman composer had an album of songs published.Folio size with music. Small holes down spine for stitching else condition good .

NORTON MRS. HON. & BARKER GEORGE.:  Patrick Ma Cushla.
London Chappell & Co. C 1852. Ornate lettered cover within a printer's frame. The Honourable Mrs Norton(1808-77) wrote one of the first great songs by a woman in the Victorian eras entitled Juanita. Caroline Norton was the grand-daughter of the playwright Richard Sheridan and was married to a Tory member of Parliament. She also wrote a good many political pamphlets and was a prime mover in the infant custody bill that went through Parliament in 1839. She also wrote The Arab's Farewell to his Favourites Steed (1865)and The Mother's Lament (1840). Folio size with music. George Barker(1812-1876) was a noted tenor singer of the day as well as a composer of music whose most famous composed song was probably the Irish Emigrant with words by Mrs Norton's elder sister.Folio size with music. LONSDALE J.J. & GABRIEL VIRGINIA.:  Ruby.
London, Metzler & Co. 1872. With an ornate lettered cover plus 5pp of music. . Sadly the lyric writer remains obscure. Not so Virginia Gabriel (1825-77)she trained with professional teachers including some composition. Her operetta Widows Bewitched ran for several weeks in London in 1867 but sadly nothing resulted from it's performances. However, although her more serious work continued to suffer, her ballads became much sought after. In about 1860 she wrote the Skipper and His Boy for Sainton Dolby and from that point on her work was well received. Dated by a music sellers stamp 6/7/1872. Condition VG .
