MATTHEWS CHARLES .:  The Auriol Polka .
London, Duncombe & Moon . 1849-52 . With a monochrome unsigned lithographic portrait of the ballet dancer Madlle. Francesca Auriol who appears to dancing a Spanish piece as she has a pair of castanets in her hands and three or four bouquets at her feet including a garland with her name. Sadly there is little information on the dancer Auriol who does merit an entry in The Romantic Ballet by Sitwell and Beaumont, for her performance in 1848 in Esmeralda and a lithograph by Baugniet else remains obscure. However Charles Mathews(1804-78) was the partner and eventual husband of Eliza Vestris at this time and it is reasonable to suppose that Auriol was dancing for the actress /Manager and her talented actor/ composer husband.. In 1856 Mme Vestris died, and in the following year Mathews again visited the United States, where in 1858 he married Mrs. A.H. Davenport. Together, they acted both in America and in London.. The London publishing firm of Duncombe & Moon were only together between 1849-53.and the Edinburgh co publisher moved from that address in 1852 and so 1849-52 seems reasonable.Folio size with music. Condition VG.

Folio with music. Including in the tunes are The Perfect Cure, Rosalie, The Great Eastern, Up the Thames to Richmond and others. Also the five Lancers dance figures are described on various pages. The composer Charles Coote was also a major dancing orchestra leader with his Coote & Tinney's Band. The Perfect Cure caused an enormous furore at the early music halls when performed by J.H Stead in a red and white baggy uniform and a dunces cap. He sang it whilst bouncing up and down in 1861.The tune was actually Blewitt's, The Monkey & the Nuts. Another tune used here is a Howard Paul song, Up the Thames to Richmond sung in 1860 and rather supports the suggested publishing date. A rare sheet, featuring the portrait of the early music hall performer J.H. Stead. Narrow tape along spine and small repair on bottom edge else condition Good/ VG.

GODFREY CHARLES.:  The Wind-Up Galop.
London ,Cramer Wood & Co. 1871/2. With a wonderful Thomas Packer colour lithograph that might almost have been drawn by Concanen. It shows a clock being speeded around by a couple of devils swinging on it's chains, with it's clock face a picture of panic, whilst down either side of the page little vignettes of people are being prepared, driven and guided to the ball and a couple are doing the galop . The composer Charles Godfrey(1839-1919) was one of the famous Godfrey family of bandmasters, conductors and composers who dominated British popular dance music for three generations. The notable music publishing firm of Cramer was only Cramer Wood between 1871-2 and that helps to date this piece. Folio size with music. UNKNOWN COMPOSER.:  The Lancer's Quadrilles.
London. No publishers. c. Early 1840's. As this piece is lacking a front cover( the music and full instructions for the dances are present) thus information is very scanty on this item. 5pp of music make up La Rose, La Lodoiska , La Dorset, L'Etoile and Les Lancers. The clue may be Rodolphe Kreutzer(1766-1831) a noted French violinist and composer, whose opera Lodoiska( 1791) was fairly successful and the Overture was for many years a great favourite. So any time between 1830-40's is a guess. Except for the front cover loss condition VG.

STIEBELT D.:  Le Retour Du Zephir.
London Robert Birchall c 1802. Ornate lettered front cover 16pp of music. A favorite Ballet for the Piano Forte with or without additional Keys also an Accompaniment for Violin & Tambourine . Daniel Steibelt (1765-1823) was so celebrated as a composer/piano player that many considered him a serious rival to Beethoven . He arrived in London in late 1796 and his first performance was May 1797 and in 1798 he composed his Concerto in E which included his Storm Rondo and this was hugely popular. After a less than triumphant tour of Germany and France including an embarrassing musical argument with Beethoven, he returned to London in 1802 where he was still very popular. In 1808/9 he moved to St Petersburg and in that city he died. The publisher Birchall published at least four other pieces by Stiebelt. Condition VG Scarce.

DEVEREAUX, L.:  Come to the Old Oak Tree.
London, Leoni Lee .c late 1830's. With an unsigned monochrome lithograph ½ page illustration of couple dancing by moonlight under an old oak tree to a fiddler standing on a chair and in the foreground two young women encouraging new arrivals to dance under the tree, watched by a man. From the Songs of the Greenwood and inside the sheet is entitled the Gipsy's Festival. The chorus of the song however repeats the front page title . 6pp of music. The composer L. Devereaux is somewhat obscure though he did arrange the Maltese Boatman's Song for Firth Ponds of New York between 1832-47. Whether he was a later relation of the noted Robert Devereaux(1567-1601) the Earl of Essex, Queens Elizabeth's favourite I am unable to say. Condition VG.

LANCELOTT F. & KAYNE A.:  Come Away to the Glen.
London, Musical Bouquet. c 1845. With a charming monochrome lithograph portrait of two ballet dancers, male and female in classic pose and in the background two more couples dancing in the forest. Sadly both Lancelott and Kayne remain obscure , this in spite of the fact that Lancelott undertook a fair amount of the arranging of Musical Bouquet material. The song was sung by the actress/singer Mrs Harriett Waylett(1800-51) who made a good reputation for herself in the English provinces and later at Drury Lane to sing in Love In a Village. In 1826 she married George Alexander Lee, the composer and appeared in his Dublin theatre for a ten year period. This music numbered 24 was published at the very beginning of the series around 1845 during Messrs Bingley and Strange's ownership and was published before Charles Sheard bought the company in the early 1850's Folio with music. The composer Venua though rather obscure composed the music for many of the London Ballets at the King's Theatre in the first two decades of the 19th century. The gavotte was danced by Mr. & Madame Deshayes, presumably Andre Jean Jacque Deshayes and his ballet dancer wife at the beginning of his time in London . The publisher Robert Birchall was only at this address between 1809-19. In fact Birchall died in 1819 and the business changed name. Condition VG. Rare.

LANCELOTT F.:  The Redowa & Polish Polkas.
London, Bingley & Strange's Musical Bouquet .late 1840's. With a monochrome illustrated ½ page of a couple in Polish costume dancing the polka within an ornate circular frame. Possibly Carlotta Grisi and Jules Perrott and rather in the style of John Brandard. Sadly F. Lancelott remains obscure , this in spite of the fact that he undertook a fair amount of composing and arranging of Musical Bouquet material.Monochrome illustration is likely to be by Alfred Ashley. This is numbered number 13 and so is right at the very beginning of the Musical Bouquet story. In the early 1850's, Charles Sheard bought the publishing business and proceeded to produce 9,000 items in the catalogue. Folio size with music. Trimmed at the top to remove the Musical bouquet name and part of the circle but the main illustration and all the music is intact else Good.

BURGMULLER F.:  Les Yeaux Bleus Valse & Ne Touchez Pas a la Reine Valse.
London Musical Bouquet c 1850's . With a ½ page monochrome unsigned lithograph of an early Victorian Dance with couples seated along the side and at least three couples dancing in the foreground of the ballroom. .Johann Frederick Burgmuller(1806-74) wrote a couple of operas and much piano music often for the dance. Number 246 in the Musical Bouquet dance series. This series commenced around 1846 and was the combined idea of James Bingley and William Strange and operated from 192 High Holborn and they blatantly pirated material from other publishers in the days before the establishment of copyright and Stationers Hall. This early sheet is just such an example. Nevertheless the front cover is stylish enough and may well be an Alfred Ashley front cover. Around 1850 Chas Sheard had replaced William Strange and indeed had taken over James Bingley's investment and under his control, the Musical Bouquet continued until 1889 and ran to almost 9,000 individual pieces of music. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

LAURENT HENRI.:  The Argyll Galop.
London, Boosey & Co. July 1858. With a superb colour lithograph by John Brandard of a couple dancing the Argyll Galop and dedicated to the patrons of the Argyll Rooms in London. The composer Henri Laurent is sadly slightly obscure although he was the musical director of the Argyll Rooms for many years( information via Kurt ganzl) and he seems around this time quite often to have arranged quadrilles and waltzes based on themes from famous operas such Dinorah for the firm of Boosey, indeed there is a list of these on the back page . The Argyll building was originally a tennis court, it became a circus, a theatre, a club and a venue for music and dancing when Robert Bignell (a wine merchant) opened the Argyll Rooms (named after the famous rooms in Argyll Street which burned down in 1832) in 1851. It attracted the nobility and the demi-monde (fringes of society) of the period and became famous for its masquerade balls.Folio size with music. Condition VG.

FAHRBACH PHILIPPE JNR.:  Frasquita Valse.
London ,Metzler & Co .c 1880. With a lovely full page colour lithograph illustration by the Hanhart Brothers of a Gipsy dancer. The composer Philippe Fahrbach(1843-85) was a Viennese composer and arranger especially of dance music. He had a composer brother Josef(1804-83). Bizet's Carmen has the soprano character Frasquita. Meyer Lutz wrote a 2 act comic opera of that title(1893) and as late as 1922 Franz Lehar wrote an operetta of that name. But I believe Fahrbach is referring to Bizet's Frasquita and it is possible that this is an illustration from the London opera.
