| CRIVELLI D. & E.E.E.: Chick Weed. London, Crivelli & J.B. Cramer. Dec 1829. With a rare monochrome front cover by Maxim Gauci and printed by Engelmann, of the noted theatrical singer Miss Love selling Chick weed in front of the music publishing house of J. B. Cramer & also Cramer, Addison & Beale. The song was published by Cramer for the author in Dec 1829. Miss Love was mainly active until the 1830's being not quite in the Vestris class but appearing often on the London stages. She later became the Countess of Harborough. The composer D. Crivelli has proved elusive, I have found he wrote a book 'instructions and progressive exercises in the art of singing D. Crivelli & the song Non Giova il Sospira , canzonetta Veneziana. The lithographic artist Maxim Gauci(17774-1854) actually drew Miss Love several times and was a major artist of these early monochrome sheets. Especially rare to find the illustration of J.B. Cramer's music premises and of course signed by the composer Crivelli, in ink in the bottom right corner. With the help of Neighbour & Tyson's research this music can be dated December 1829. Folio size with music Condition VG. € (euro) 190.00 [Appr.: US$ 284.62 | £UK 171.25 | JP¥ 25141] Book number: 6946 Click here to order or inquire at Olde Musick & Cokery Books. | ||

With colour lithograph by Parla that shows two soldiers and an old man toasting victory and with an inset portrait of possibly the composer. The song comes from a series of songs from the repertoire of Paulus and sung by him. This very famous song considered only marginally less important in its day than the Marsellaise and composed by Louis Ganne(1862 -1923).Ganne composed opera, comic opera, ballet music and a number of popular marches and mazurkas. This sheet is particularly valuable as the composer has signed it with note to a former pupil in England Richard Adamson. It is possible to track the dates so precisely through Hopkinson's Dictionary of Parisian Music Publishers. Folio size with music. He followed this success with many more marches between 1835-40 and again during this period 2 piano forte lesson book and Drawing Room Melodies. | STRAUSS JOHANN JNR: Strauss's Promenade Quadrille. London, Chas Sheard mid 1860's. With a wonderful full colour lithograph by Richard Childs of a Covent Garden promenade concert complete with a mass of strolling audience, filled boxes and on the stage, the very large promenade concert orchestra conducted by Johann Strauss(1825-99). Deservedly known as the Waltz King he came to London in 1867 before turning to write for the stage from 1871 with a succession of famous operettas. But here an historic moment showing Strauss conducting at a Covent Garden Promenade concert. Perhaps surprisingly the tunes used for this quadrille are some of the very popular early music hall tunes of the day both English and American. Finally in the bottom right corner is a light ink signature Johann Strauss( note that it is identical to the signature on a piece of Strauss music which I found on the web site of bob january- google to view). The cover is trimmed through the lower printed title of the composer else condition VG Folio size with music. Henry & Co commenced business in 1863 and published many Lancashire songs and music until the mid 1880's.
