| GANTIER FELIX.: Wales Fantasia. London Charles Jefferys.c 1860's With a colour lithograph by Thomas Packer of Carnarvon Castle and in the foreground are several boats and sailing ships. This is a fantasia on the airs The March of the Men of Harlech, Poor Mary Ann & The Ash Grove. The composer Felix Gantier is sadly obscure even though he worked extensively for the publisher Charles Jeffery as an arranger. However, I have recently seen it suggested in an entry at the University of Southampton Music Library, that Gantier was a pseudonym of Charles William Glover(1806-63) who was the violinist at Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theatres and Musical Director of the Queens Theatre London. He wrote the noted song, the Rose of Tralee(1850) and was hugely popular in America as well as Britain during this period .There were clearly many other pieces in this series and 10 in another series with operatic themes and almost always with artistic colourful lithographic covers. | BUTLER T.H.: Lewie Gordon( a New Edition). Edinburgh, T.H. Butler c 1814 With Simple ¼ page titles and almost 3 pages of music. Originally a song to celebrate the Jacobite victory at the Battle of Inverurie on 23 December 1745. The Jacobite forces were commanded by the hero of this song - Lord Lewis Gordon, younger brother of the Duke of Gordon. Lord Lewis abandoned a career in the Royal Navy to follow his clan's Jacobite leanings and joined Prince Charles in Edinburgh during October 1745 and was appointed a member of the Prince's Council. He was sent north to recruit men and also to collect arms and money. This he did successfully, although sometimes by drastic action , and raised a regiment of two battalions. At Inverurie the defeated Hanoverians were led by MacLeod of MacLeod and Munro of Culcairn and the greatest piper in Scotland, Duncan Ban MacCrimmon, was taken prisoner by the victorious Jacobites. After Culloden, Lord Lewis fled abroad and joined Prince Charles ('The lad I daurna name') in France. He died in exile in 1754.
