| SMITH ALBERT.: The Medical Student. London ,Leoni Lee & Coxhead. c early1850's. With a delightful witty monochrome lithographic portrait of a medical student by John Brandard (1812-1863) who specialised in Waltz,Polka covers and is particularly admired for his ballet and opera covers. Humourous examples of his work are rather unusual not to say rare.The composer /lyric writer Albert Smith who died in 1860 ran popular entertainments at the Egyptian Hall London between 1851-58 that centred upon his feat of climbing Mont Blanc but also he probably had music ,dance and song within them, Certainly J.H. Tully wrote The Mont Blanc Quadrilles and C.R. Cooke the Chamouni Polka in celebration of Smith and his entertainments which were as popular in London as Madame Tussauds..Folio size with music. Repaired cover through lithograph and rather worn along outer and bottom edge & slightly foxed else Fair. With an ornate gold and green lithograph front cover by the rare lithographer Bowcher of Newman Street London. Sadly the lyric writer Henry John Ryde and composer W.H. Aldridge remain obscure save that Ryde was also selling this song from his home in Clapham and also a song The Ingleside music by Aldridge and lyric by the noted mid Victorian poet Eliza Cook. The publisher Thomas Edward Purday operated from 1834-62 at that address. The lithographer Bowcher worked around 1850 according to Parkinson (Victorian Music Publishers) Folio size with music. | WOODLEY AUGUSTA & PRIDHAM JOHN.: Sparkling Streamlet. London Brewer & Co c 1860's . With a very nice colour lithograph cover of a mountain stream all set in a gold lattice frame by the masterly artist Alfred Concanen together with Thomas Lee and the lesser of the partners, Siebe. Sadly the lyric writer Augusta Woodley remains obscure. John Pridham (1818-96) was a most popular composer on a theme. Whether martial or religious it seemed that themes were the key with Pridham. Amongst his supporters was Queen Victoria. With an old sellotape strip along the top edge and an old paper strip along the bottom but not actually affecting the illustration though there is a small area by the middle of the spine missing else Good. | FARNIE H.B & GOUNOD CHARLES.: Ring on! Sweet Angelus (an Evening Song) . London, Metzler & Co . 1876. With a small central colour lithograph cover of a Church Bell tower at sundown Very much in the style of Thomas Packer. Henry Gounod(1818-1893), A Parisian and in 1839 one of his early pieces -Cantata won the Grand Prix de Rome and after study in Italy and Germany.His first Opera was produced in 1859. He became a most sought after composer across Europe.A period in England produced a number of successful pieces including Nazareth and perhaps his most famous song- There is a Green Hill Far Away -in 1871.He returned to France in 1875 to continue to write both sacred and secular music. | GREY BEATRICE & WRIGHTON W.T.: The Belfry Quaint and Olden. London, Robert Cocks& Co. c 1860's. With a charming colour lithograph illustration of a belfry behind a wood and adjoining a village and in the foreground a small stream. The poet Beatrice Grey is sadly now obscure. . W.T Wrighton(1816-1880) was a prolific early Victorian composer."Mr Wrighton is par excellence, the Ballad Music writer of the day"-Court Circular. There were also positive reviews from John Bull and The Times as well as numerous local papers in another song sheet of the period. In one piece over 60 songs were advertised with music by Wrighton for his publisher Cocks. Thomas Packer who died in 1897 was particularly famous for the skies in his art work and it earned him the nickname of-Graduated tint Packer because he invented a process that allowed great subtlety in moonlight, sunsets and clouds and this is a fine example. With a brown lithographic cover by Oscar Brandsetter of Leipzig including an inset photographic sepia portrait of the Brescian Family’s Miss Florence Hayward. Aphonse Cary commenced business in 1880 and moved to that address in 1895 and became Cary & Co in 1898 and was at that address until 1914. Presumably the composer and the performer were related yet sadly they both remain obscure. Folio size with music. Pictorial colour lithograph cover of a woman in a small field and beside a gate and farmhouse and is by Alexander Laby (1814-99) and printed by Stannard & Dixon. The lyricist Cecil Grey is obscure but the composer is almost certainly the music publisher and composer Joseph W. Williams who joined his mothers company in 1842, took over in 1845 and died in 1883.Folio with music . Some signs of foxing else condition good. With a ¼ front page engraving by Smyth and 4 ¼ page engravings by Williamson that illustrate this ILN Musical Supplement of three songs with lyrics by Mackay and set to famous tunes by Bishop. The first song melody is actually by William Shield, the second by John Gay and the third from Playford's Dancing Master. | JEFFREYS CHARLES: Morn from the Misty Mountains London , Charles Jeffreys of Soho Square .( c 1845) . Adapted from Mozarts La Ci Darem and with an unsigned monochrome and gold lithograph cover, suspiciously in the style of John Brandard. This is number 4 in a series of Italian Duettinos. The composer Sydney Nelson(1800-1862) entered into a songwriting partnership with Charles Jeffries around 1840 and soon afterwards they began a music publishing business. By 1843, Nelson had decided to leave the publishing to Jeffreys whilst he toured America, Canada and Australia. Jeffreys went on to make a considerable success of the publishing.The illustrated front cover is likely to be by John Brandard (1812-1863) who specialised in Waltz,Polka covers and mainly ballet and opera covers. Folio size with music. | JEFFERYS CHARLES & GLOVER CHARLES W.: The Spanish Flower Girl Song (the Greenwood,the Greenwood). London, Charles Jefferys.Late 1840's. With a stunning colour lithograph by John Brandard with a gold frame and inset a portrait of a Spanish flower girl. Charles Jefferys (1807-65) was a noted lyricist/publisher , he wrote the lyrics to many notable songs such as Mary of Argyle but his most lasting song is Rose of Allandale. Charles Glover(1806-63) was the violinist at Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theatres and Musical Director of the Queens Theatre London. He wrote the noted song the Rose of Tralee(1850) and was hugely popular in America as well as Britain during this period. John Brandard (1812-1863) who specialised in Waltz,Polka covers and mainly ballet and opera covers. He worked extensively with Michael and Nicholas Hanhart to produce these opulent sheets. | JEFFERYS CHARLES & GLOVER STEPHEN.: The Vale of Waters . London, C. Jefferys . c 1850's. With a fine mainly sepia and light brown and red lithograph by John Brandard of a Vale between mountain and a lake in the distance and in the foreground a woman in Welsh dress walking along a road and further away a man and his dog controlling some sheep also on the road.This then is the noted Vale of the Waters--Nant Gwynant, which circles round the rugged grandeur of the southern slopes of Snowdon.Charles Jefferys(1807-65) wrote the lyrics to many notable songs such as Mary of Argyle but his most lasting song is Rose of Allandale. Glover (1813-1870) who wrote upwards of 1,500 compositions, was also noted for his marches at the time of the Crimean War and as well as Alma and Sebastopol Marches. He wrote Prince Albert Band March, which in 1851 sold 98,000 Folio size with music. London Addison& Hollier 1856 With a lovely , unsigned full page monochrome lithograph cover of the actress Rebecca Isaacs walking along a heavily wooded path by the river and some way behind a man watching her .The song sung by her was nightly encored in the operetta TWAS I at theStrand Theatre, words and music by Lt.Col. Addision & E.J. Loder. It has the publishers imprint trimmed off but there is a music publishers date stamp of 2?/8/1856 and the corner of that stamp begins ADD and can only be Addison & Hollier. The lithograph art is either by John Brandard or an equally talented but lesser known artist G.E. Black 4pp of music folio size. Lacking the second page of music so only first two pages of Banks & Braes and so priced accordingly primarily for the Lithograph. | RUSSELL & COOK.: I’M Afloat, Or the Rover’S Song. London, Davidson of Peter’s Hill Doctors Common. ( c 1860). Ornate monochrome frame around the song and intricate lettered & highlighted composers name.Henry Russell (1812-1900) was for seventy years an entertainer who also almost made history. He invented a mix of song and backdrop that described places and events in an heroic way or dramatic way.Far West was first heard in Britain in 1840 and within his singing he took on the various characters of the song. Woodman spare that tree, a Life on the ocean wave,The spider and the fly and A fine old English Gentleman are even today well known.In all he composed the music and some of the words and sang upwards of 800 songs. Eliza Cook(1818-89) was a precocious lyric poet who also ran Cook's Journal, a ladies periodical, from 1849.Probably her most famous lyric was the Old Armchair. Davidson(Musical Treasury) and Charles Sheard(Musical Bouquet) were in deadlyt competition for the mass sheet music market in the middle years of the century and in particular they bickered over the publishing rights to Russell and Cook. Folio size with music. | WOOD D.: Only an Ivy Leaf. London , John Blockley .( c 1867). With a full colour cover lithograph by Stannard & Son of Ivy entwining around the centred title.This version arranged by John Blockley. There is a version, almost certainly later in the Victorian Minstrel catalogue and sung by the Mohawk Minstrels at the Agricultural Hall Islington. The original composer of what was clearly a popular piece D. Wood remains obscure. Not so John Blockley(1800-82).One of a number of composer/ publishers in the middle and later nineteenth century, it has been said of Blockley that he ransacked the poetry of Longfellow and particularly Tennyson even before the ink was dry on the paper and certainly the two men made money out of the songs of the Charge of the Light Brigade and Ring out Wild Bells. Joseph Edward Carpenter(died 1885) was a highly successful lyricist working with many of the major composers of the day and in this case he added words to an extremely popular waltz by Dan Godfrey(1831-1903) who was Bandmaster of the Grenadier Guards .The Godfrey family were hugely instrumental in developing symphonic as well as band music as more popular music forms.His son,Dan Godfrey Jnr. moved to Bournemouth in the late 1890's and founded the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the resultant concerts. This song gained the prize as the best song at the Melodists Club May 29th 1851. It was also sung by the noted English tenor Sims Reeves. Edward J.Gill was a notable English lyric writer and poet Edward Land (1815-76) pianist and composer of many songs was also accompanist to the Glee Union . As their song won the prize on May 29th 1851 it reasonable to assume that Addison & Hollier published it within the next few months. Published in the Musical Bouquet Series No 382 by Charles Sheard with a superb half page front cover of the author Eliza Cook and with music by the composer and performer Henry Russell This song is expresslly sanctioned by the lyricist and the composer and is the authorised edition according to the publisher. Russell who was born in 1812 was a popular singer in the saloons and supper clubs that flourished before the advent of music hall.He wrote and sang Woodman spare that tree and famously at the time- The Maniac.They were usually ballads with a moral tone and this one is no exception.
