ROSENBERG ALBERT.:  The Swing Polka.
London Duff & Stewart. C. 1880-4. With a full colour lithograph cover by the Hanhart Brothers showing a little boy and a slightly smaller girl swinging on a swing which is attached to the ceiling of an opening into a walled garden. In the background is a high turret of a large house. Sadly the composer Albert Rosenberg remains obscure. Although the music business commenced in 1831 and continued with a number of different partners whilst still carrying the name of the originator John Duff until 1930, the publishers Duff & Stewart were only at this address between 1880-4 This sheet also carries a Tasmanian music publishers imprint- T.L. Hood. Folio with music. Condition VG.

RIDLEY S. CLAUDE.:  Petty Trifles for Juvenile Performers.
London, The London Music Publishing Company c 1880's. With a lovely unsigned lithograph cover of a large smiling puppet dancing and a little child tying a bonnet and another playing a drum and the main illustration is a little girl arranging a group of white rabbits on a large book and behind them is a large dolls house. There were 12 pieces in the series and this is Number 2 Celia's Gavotte. The composer Claude S. Ridley also published 4 other pieces with the company , the 12 items in this series and a Church service suitable for parish Choirs all for the London Music Publishing Co. Folio size with music. Condition VG .

WARD CLEMENTINE.:  Black & White (Colour Action Song).
London, J. Curwen . 1906. With a group photograph of three young girls and three young boys with black masks and otherwise white faced. I have only found one piece that the composer Clementine Ward also wrote entitled A Romance in G. . There are a set of directions on the inside front page.Folio size with music. Brown Paper down the spine and the back cover torn else to lose the last couple of bars of music else condition Good .

MACK E.:  A.B. C(Recreations for Young Pianists) .
Philadelphia ,Lee & Walker. 1865. With a colour lithograph by Lauderbach of the 26 titles of the pieces in the series as a frame and inside the frame a very young child sitting on a cushion reading an ABC book. This is number 5 in the series The Echo March by Edward Mack (1826-82). Edward Mack was born in Stuttgart, Germany and came to the United States when he was five years old. He entered the Philadelphia Institute for the Blind in 1844. Mack lived in New London, Connecticut for a brief period but then returned to Philadelphia. His principal output as a composer was in the form of dance music and marches for the piano . This piece was entered at the Clerks Office in that year. Folio size with music. Rather well used and with two or three small tears neatly repaired along the edges and somewhat disbound but nevertheless complete and attractive.

DICK COTSFORD CHARLES GEORGE.:  A Singing Quadrille ( of Nursery Rhymes).
London, Robert Cocks. c.1870's. With a truly wonderful colour lithograph cover by the masterly Alfred Concanen of scene from the following Nursery Rhymes: Little Jack Horner, Tom Tom the Pipers Son, Ba-Ba Black Sheep, Jack & Gill, Goosey Goosey Gander, Simple Simon & Little Bo Peep. The words and music of these make up the Quadrille composed by Charles George Cotsford Dick(born 1848), he wrote primarily for the German Reed Entertainments in the mid 1870's.He also composed a children's opera, A Fairy Wedding and the operetta Dr.D and as late as 1892, the comic opera The Waif and also in the same year The Baroness. Folio size with music. Rather weary down the spine and a couple of small pieces missing else condition good. Outstanding Concanen litho.

HOLLANDS HIRAM.:  Off to the Seaside Descriptive Fantasia.
London W. Paxton c 1912. With a colour lithograph, unsigned and with 6 inset illustrations: Journey in the train, Building Sand Castles, Listening to the Pierrots, A Donkey Ride and a Trip on the Steamer . The composer Hiram Hollands remains obscure although he also composed the 'Aerial Post' celebrating the first Air mail in Britain in 1911. The publisher William Paxton was bought a publishing company by his mother and from this address from1909 published an enormous amount of material very often on a theme and within hours of an event. . Folio size with music. Tape along spine and later music pages trimmed along outer edge but with no loss to music else condition VG .

COOTE CHARLES JNR.:  Baby Boy Quadrille (on Nursery Rhymes).
London Hopwood & Crew. Hand dated 1/6/1880. .With an unsigned monochrome portrait of a young baby boy from a photograph by Henry Henny. As the quadrille is dedicated to Mrs. Desanges it is likely that this is baby Desanges. Hopwood and Crew were amongst the earliest of the specifically popular music publishers who set up business in the early 1850's They specialized in Music Hall and light Dance Music and their major star was Charles Coote Jnr (1831-1916).Coote was perhaps one of the most prolific dance music composers of the period with over 40 Quadrilles, Waltzes(33), and Polkas(38) as well as 48 Duets(Quadrilles, Waltzes,Polkas and Galops) advertised on the back of one music sheet. In 1875 Coote bought the catalogue of Hopwood and Crew with his partner Edward Chappell. They retained the name however until it was finally absorbed by Chappells in 1969. Folio size with music. Light water stain in the bottom outside corner else condition very good.

GLEADHILL T.S.:  The Children's Evening Party.
London ,Swan & Pentland . c 1870's. .With a charming lithograph cover by Home & MacDonald of children playing the drum and the trumpet and dancing and also playing Blind Man's Buff. This is in a very large collection of Games with tunes, Songs for the little ones, Quadrilles, Waltzes, Schottisches, Polkas, Country dances, Vocal marches and all compiled and arranged for a full evenings entertainment.35 pages of music and games instructions. The composer/compiler Thomas Swift Gleadhill( born 1827) lived in Glasgow and taught piano there and composed and wrote and or compiled a number of tutors. He composed the music for a number of songs including Pettigrew's song My Bonnie Dark Eyed Dearie in 1882. The Glasgow publisher, David Swan added a partner Pentland only between 1869-78 and that helps to narrow the publishing date down.Folio size with music. Condition VG . Rare

MATTEI TITO.:  Oh! Dear What Can the Matter Be?
London, Edwin Ashdown . c 1880's. With a sepia lithograph by Thomas W. Lee of a young woman watching from her cottage at activities at a nearby fair. A transcription by the composer Tito Mattei(1841-1914) Italian born pianist and composer, worked around Europe before settling in London. Was Conductor at Her Majesties Theatre. Composed an opera, many songs, marches, nocturnes and little pieces like this which is based on the old nursery rhyme & folk tune whose last line is Johnny so long at the Fair. Folio size with music. SMALLWOOD W.:  The Birthday Polka.
London, Samuel Brewer. C. early 1860's. .With a very surprising colour lithograph by John Brandard of a birthday party of little children either in fancy dress or set in the 18th century. All the children though very small are behaving like adults. It is very different to Brandard's usual illustrations. The composer, W. Smallwood was born in Kendal in the North of England in 1831 and was mainly published in the 1870's with such other titles as The Schipka Pass March.The Pansy Polka , The Princess Louise Schottische and The Winter Season Galop. John Brandard (1812-1863) who specialised in Waltz,Polka covers featuring ballet and opera performers and worked extensively with Michael and Nicholas Hanhart to produce these opulent sheets.The publisher Brewer traded from this address from 1849-90. Folio size with music. Small repaired tear along bottom edge not affecting else condition VG Folio size with music .

GODFREY W.:  Oughts and Crosses Quadrille.
London, D'Alcorn .late 1870's. With a full colour lithograph cover by a rare artist J. Norman, of a nursery blackboard with childrens doodles and sums and clearly where they have been games of (N)oughts and Crosses, printed by Thomas Lee. Although W. Godfrey worked on a couple of occasion for this publisher, he is not I think a member of the famous Godfrey composing and band conducting family and remains obscure, though he did work for D'Alcorn . Godfrey has used popular songs bothfrom the parlour, the music hall and even an American hit. The publisher D'Alcorn owned in excess of 1,500 comic songs as well as a catalogue of waltzes and light opera all of which he auctioned off upon his retirement in 1879.Folio size with music. Condition very good.
