| CORRI P.ANTONY.: Roses and Lilies Divertisement. London, Robert Birchall . pre 1819. Ornate lettered cover and 13 pages of music. Consisting of an Andantino, Hornpipe and Pastorale. Philip Antony Corri was born in Edinburgh in 1784. He was a son of the Italian-born composer Domenico Corri, and brother-in-law to Bohemian pianist and composer Jan Ladislav Dussek. Moving with the family to London in 1789, Philip Antony was composing vocal works by 1802, piano music by 1805, and chamber music (mostly for piano, harp, and flute) by 1808.During the years to follow, he was an active a composer for these mediums, producing over forty works; his piano works were published both in Britain and on the continent. During this time, Corri made other contributions to the musical life of London. In 1810, his extensive piano teaching method L'anima di musica was published. For its time, it was the largest work of its kind produced in England, and remains a highly valuable guide to the interpretation of the piano music of his time. In 1813, Corri, along with Clementi and the Cramers, founded the London Philharmonic Society and participated in the formative meetings for the Royal Academy of Music' In 1817 after some unclear but scandalous problems involving his wife, who he left behind, he moved to America where he changed his name to Clifton and within a decade his scandalous past began to catch up with him and a second very promising career in America lay in ruins. He died in 1832. This piece was reviewed by the Repository of Arts, in April 1809 and it is reasonable to assume this to be soon after publication. | WARE W.H.: The Cabin Boy. London Mitchells. C.1806. London Mitchells. C.1806. With a ½ page ornate lettered titles plus 2 ½ pages of music. Sung by Master Smalley in the pantomime of Harlequin & Mother Goose at the Theatre Royal Covent Garden which opened on 29th December 1806. The Theatre bills all named W.H. Ware as the composer and he was the principal violinist and leader of the Theatre Orchestra. He also wrote three duets and an opus for two violins and cello. Gerald Frow in his book on the pantomime devotes several pages to this most important work which starred Joey Grimaldi and ran for 92 nights which was a considerable success. Frow writes '( Harlequinade &) Mother Goose marks a turning point in the history of pantomime because from this point on Clown was set fair and square as the principal character of the Harlequinade. But beyond that it established in its opening scenes a style that is recognizable to this day as the authentic voice of pantomime.' The publisher Mitchell was at this address from 1811 but he has pasted over his previous address with a the new one and therefore I feel this sheet may well be as early as 1806. Condition VG. | PURCELL HENRY & CLARKE JOHN DR.(ARR.): Mad Tom. London, Birchall & Co . November 1828 . With ornate lettered cover , 8pp of music. Dr John Clarke(1770-1836) an organist and composer of many glees and an early arranger of Handel's oratorios. In 1810 he added the name Whitfield to his paternal name of Clarke which rather confuses the dating by Neighbour & Tyson as that would indicate an earlier date than 1810 for this music. Further oddly the Mad Tom/ Mad Maudlin songs are assumed to be anon but here Clarke is clearly indicating that this 'Mad Tom' was composed by Henry Purcell(1658-95). Purcell is considered the finest English composer of his period. The piece can be dated November 1828 thanks to the work on music publishers plate numbers by Neighbour & Tyson.
