| TALEXY ADRIEN.: Oevres. Paris, Ledentu. c 1850's. Undated but bound in a folio pencil dated 1859 also publishers stamp Nov 1845 and so most likely after 1845 & before 1859). With a monochrome litho front cover of a tree providing a frame for the lettering.The artwork by Magnier and the litho printing by Laval of Paris. Adrien Talexy(1820-1881) was a pianist and composer who produced a considerable volume of work. His early pieces were for piano and in 1860 he conducted French operas in London which were not a great success.Then in the mid 1870's he tried unsuccessfully break into the operetta market in Paris. N.B. The Postal Districts were not altered in Paris until 1900 and so Fuld's dating aid does not apply here. Folio size with music. With a charming monochrome lithograph in the manner of an etching of a hunter and his dog sitting by a rock looking towards a town across a lake. Albert Jungmann(born 1814) spent much of his life in Vienna. He has 100 pieces of his music in the American sheet music Collection at the Library of Congress all published around 1879-85. With a blue lettered cover, including, an illustration of a young woman leaning smilingly on a young man's shoulder. The composer is strangely obscure given the amount of interest in the piece from it's first publication in May 1900 A very popular piece made in to a Wurlitzer roll in 1900. Used by Renoir in his Rules of the Game film and still being re-printed into the 1990's.Sung here by the famous Chanteuse Paulette Darty born Paulette De Bardy in Paris in 1871. The full colour lithograph cover is by Roder of Leipzig.This piece of music written for the zither is one of nine pieces written for the publishing house possibly by the publisher(or a relation) himself.The front cover is a superb example of the talent of the Leipzig lithographers who at this time had reversed the trend and were producing better(more complex and artistic ) sheets than their British counterparts. | ZAFFIRA & ARDITI.: Kellogg Valse Mainz, Schott and Son. c 1870's With a lithographic cover printed in Leipzig and signed but undecipherable , of a young woman's portrait set in an ornate frame of titles.This waltz with words both in German and Italian. Luigi Arditi(1822-1903) Italian composer and conductor who was particularly popular in America and England. I Briganti(1841) Il Corsaro(1846) and produced in America-La Spia(1856). In 1858 he settled in England and toured Europe including germany in the 1860's. According to Groves Music and Musicians, Arditi's Vocal waltz Il Bacio was a universal favourite..The charming lithograph has one extraordinary feature as the artist has signed it in mirror writing and it would appear to be signed Bernk Ott- Litho. Jorel and printed by Bertauts & Cadet of a young woman drawing water from a garden well. Jacques Louis Battmann ( born 1818) was a French organist and composer of over 200 pieces for the piano and organ. The publishers Heugel et Cie were only at this address between 1847-51 and hence we can narrow publishing date down to this period. . Folio size with music. | BAUMANN, JOSEPH.: Di Milhusar Electrischa Tramway Marsch. Mulhouse ,Theophile Wahl. c 1890's. With a red and white cover with flowers forming a frame for the titles and inset a picture of The Mulhouse Electric Tram in operation. A wonderfully idiosyncratic piece by Baumann, apparently the professor of Music in Mulhouse and with titles in both French and German and a song as well as a March. Baumann also wrote Mulhousiana Valse and Georgette Polka. Folio size with music. This is the first of six pieces for young learner pianists entitled Les Soirees Enfantines. Camille Schubert was the nom de plume of the French composer/publisher Camille Prillip (born 1810) Prillip also known as Phillip operated in Paris until 1876. Carl Zeller (1842 - 1898). Romantic / Post Romantic, Composer. Carl Zeller was a member of the Vienna Boys Choir as a youth. He saw success later than his contemporaries, but in 1891 his Der Vogelhändler became a world hit. This song is from the operetta Der Oberstieger. Folio size with music. With a superb unsigned colour lithographic cover of a group of Arabic hunters trying to kill a lion and lioness who are savaging two of the hunters as reinforcements are arriving. | COOTE CHARLES.: Fleur de Ble (Cornflower) Valse. Paris, Choudens .c 1860. Folio with music. With an unsigned colour lithograph of a young girl stepping over a stream with a bag full of flowers and carrying a sheaf of corn on her head. Both the publisher Charles Coote(1808-80) and his son Charles Coote Jnr were composers and Coote the elder operated from the Conduit St. address between 1859-62 and his 'band the Coote & Tinney Band were major promoters of Coote's material in the 1860's. Curiously the British publisher Chappell used the same lithographic cover for Charles D'Albert's Mountain Daisy Valse. In Britain the Coote cover for the Cornflower valse is entirely different. The French publisher Choudens was only at this address between 1857-75. | GOUNOD CHARLES & BARNIER JULES.: Hymne a la Nuit . Paris, Choudens . 1857. With a monochrome lithograph cover by A. Jannin of ornate frames and the titles sympathetically curved and a centred inset oval picture of a stone balcony looking out towards hills and bathed in moonlight, printed by Arowy of Paris. Henry Gounod(1818-1893), was a Parisian and in 1839 one of his early pieces -Cantata won the Grand Prix de Rome and after study in Italy and Germany. His first Opera was produced in 1859. He became the most sought after composer across Europe. A period in England produced a number of successful pieces including Nazareth and perhaps his most famous song in English- There is a Green Hill Far Away -in 1871.He returned to France in 1875 to continue to write both sacred and secular music. Dan Godfrey(1831-1903),the Bandmaster of the Grenadier Guards so as to provide musical accompaniment to the popular dance of the day-the Lancers.The Godfrey family were hugely instrumental in developing symphonic as well as band music as more popular music forms.His son,Dan Godfrey Jnr. moved to Bournemouth in the late 1890's and founded the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the resultant concerts. | MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX.: Deuxieme Recueil de Six Romances Sans Paroles ( Op. 30) Paris, Brandus & Cie. 1853. With a front cover lithograph of mainly ornate lettering and flowers shapes by A . Vialon. Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-47) was born in Hamburg Germany. First performed in 1818 and first composed 1820. Early visit to Britain 1827/9 and first conducted in London 1844 and last conducted (Elijah) in 1847 just prior to his death in Leipzig. Opus 30 was first published in 1833 in Paris by Schlesinger and it would appear that these plates were used by Brandus as that is what is printed on the bottom of each page(M.S. 1833). 13 pp of music. | FRAENZEL FERDINAND .: Six Quators Pour Deux Violons,Alto & Basse . Offenbach Sur Le Mein,Jean Andre. (c 1820). Third edition. Parts 1 & Part 2. Ferdinand Franzl (1770-1833) was taught violin by his musician father. He was extremely popular in Italy and Russia and by 1802 was considered to be one of the best of the living violinists and his compositions were very popular.He did however play in the old style and within the early years of the 19th century he was overtaken by newer performers , especially from Paris. he retired in 1826 although his composed music continued to be popular. | PIHIER FRANCIS.: Marche de St. Cyriens. Paris ,Emile Gallet .1893. With a coloured lithograph cover by Royet( dated 1893) and printed by Delanchy showing a platoon of French soldiers marching watched by a small group of people and with inset illustrations on the bottom edge soldiers weaponry and flags and top edge a portrait of a soldier. Dedicated to the St Cyr Battalion. Sadly the composer Pihier remains obscure. St Cyr was started by Napoleon in 1803 at Fontainbleu and at St Cyr. There are now 40 such Military Academies. The publisher Gallet acquired Colombier's publishing house in 1893. Folio size with music.
