HOLZMANN ABE.:  Smoky Mokes Cakewalk & Two Step.
Sydney, Albert & Son. 1899. With a blue lettered cover with some ornamentation and design. Originally published in 1899 by Leo Feist in New York. Abraham Holzmann (1874-1939) wrote many cakewalks, and marches perhaps notably Smokey Mokes in 1899 and Blaze Away which was very popularly played by Sousa. . Folio size with music. Some small repaired tears along outer edge else condition Good.

SHEPHERD ADALINE.:  Live Wires Rag.
Sydney, Alberts .1910. With a full colour cover of two men receiving considerable electric shocks from the end of 'Live' wires. The composer Adaline Shepherd (1883-1950) was born in Algona, Iowa. Her first rag was "Pickles and Peppers", written in 1906. It was followed by "Wireless Rag" (1909) and "Live Wires" (1910). Her last known composition, "Victory March", dates from 1917. Despite her family's poor opinion of her later years piano playing, "Pickles and Peppers" became very popular. William Jennings Bryan used it in his unsuccessful presidential campaign of 1908, and "Pickles and Peppers" sold over 200 000 sheet music copies in 1908 alone. It continued to sell well for a number of years thereafter.Folio size with music . Condition VG .

CLIFFORD ARTHUR.:  Cherries Waltz .
Melbourne, Allan & Co c. 1912. With a green lithograph cover , signed H H, of a young woman smiling beside a branch full of cherries. Sadly the composer Arthur Clifford remains obscure, although he did compose Love's Longing , another waltz, for the publishers Allan & Co. This was actually printed in England and sent over to Australia for Allan's . Folio size with music Condition VG.

CLIFFORD ARTHUR.:  Peg O’ My Heart Waltz .
Melbourne, Allan & Co. 1916. With a portrait of the heroine of the famous play. First written in 1913. Two of Allan’s shareholders brought it to Australia and made £25,000. Not surprisingly Allans published the waltz. A previous owner pencilled the date 1916 as when he bought the sheet but is likely to be 1913 when published. Folio size with music. Condition very good.

SMITH EDGAR SLOANE A.BALDWIN.:  Heaven Will Protect the Working Girl.
Sydney, Albert's Music 1909. With a dark blue and white cover of the ornate titles and an oval inset portrait of the singer Eugenie Le Blanc (complete with a set of golf clubs!). A burlesque ballad subtitled Tilly's Nightmare which was first published in New York by Chas K. Harris. Sung by Eugenie Le Blanc in the American Musical Burlesque Co production of The Grafters Sadly both Eugenie Le Blanc and the show The Grafters remains obscure although the Nat Library of New Zealand has some ephemera that indicates that producer William Anderson brought this show to Wellington in 1914. Anderson was an early Australian theatre and film producer. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

VALVERDE C. & COLLINS ARTHUR.:  Skating Vocal Waltz.
Melbourne, Allan & Co. c. 1908. With a blue and white cover depicting the main title with ice and snow on the letters and lady and her man roller skating and the lesser titles. Originally entitled the Valse of the Swallows it was featured in ' the great skating scene' in J.C. Williamson's pantomime Jack & Jill in Melbourne. Valverde remains obscure. Arthur Collins was stage manager and later manager of the Dury Lane Theatre and often wrote the pantomime scripts, this from Viola Tait's book on Pantomime in Australia. Folio size with music. KUMMER CLARE.:  Egypt My Cleopatra .
Sydney, Albert & son..c. 1903. With an unsigned red, black and white lithograph cover that highlights the lettering and in the center is a photograph of the Australian singer of this song Miss May Beatty in the show Rose of Riviera . Originally published by Jos. Stern in New York Clare Kummer also wrote A Rich Coon's Babe and If Only I had a Chance. Kummer according to Spaeth had previously been a playwright/novelist. . Folio size with music. Slightly worn along outer and bottom edges else condition Good.

CRAWFORD CLIFTON.:  On the Shady Side of Bond Street.
Melbourne , Allan & Co.1906. With a blue and white lithographed cover of three young women walking along the road and inset photographs of the two singers from the musical comedy, The Belle of Mayfair , Ruth Lincoln & Roland Bottomley. Originally published in America this song may well have added to the musical comedy that originated in London with music by Leslie Stuart in 1906, then New York for 140 performances but whose main run was 416 nights in 1907 in London. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

DEMPSEY J.E. & SCHMID JOHANN C.:  The Garden of Roses .
Melbourne, Stanley Mullen. c 1908 . With blue lettered cover and with a portrait by Talma of the singer Miss Ray Jones. Originally written by Americans and published by Jerome Remick and licensed to Feldman in Britain who in turn licensed it to Mullens. Sadly I can find no information of local performer Ray Jones other than she also sang the Coon's Serenade at the Melbourne Opera House in 1904. A little tired especially along the bottom edge else Good.

Sydney, W.H. Paling . c 1903. With a full colour lithographed front cover by C&T HW of a couple picking apple blossoms inset and behind a river in a gorge . Also with a substantial stuck on music sellers label from John Foster of Mary Street Gympie Queensland. Folio size with music. Condition very good.

HULL FLORENCE.:  Forget Me Not .
Melbourne, F.M. Kenny .C 1915. With a coloured front cover of small sprigs of blue flowers( forget me nots). The composer Florence Hull who is advertised as being from Tasmania has another 7 songs advertised on the back cover with A Sprig of Boronia obviously the most successful. The only additional information I can find, is that A Sprig of Boronia was used by the Victorian School Examination Board in 1917. Rare original publisher. Tape along spine and tiny speckle of foxing and water stain up outer edge else condition Good.

HULL FLORENCE.:  A Sprig of Boronia .
Melbourne, F.M. Kenny 1916. With a coloured front cover of small sprig of brown flowers. The composer Florence Hull who is advertised on the back as being from Tasmania has another 7 songs advertised on the back cover with A Sprig of Boronia obviously the most successful. This was sung by Paul Dufault.The only additional information I can find is that A Sprig of Boronia was used by the Victorian School Examination Board in 1917. Rare original publisher. Paper tape along spine else condition Good/VG.

HELF J.FRED & HUNTINGTON E.S.S.:  I'm Tying the Leaves So They Won't Come Down.
Sydney, Albert's . 1907. With a green and brown coloured illustrated cover of a young boy in a tree tying up the leaves watched by a horrified policeman and in the bottom spine corner a green oval portrait of the performer Heba Barlow who featured the song in Anderson & Sheridan's pantomime Cinderella worked for John F. Sheridan's company in 1904 & 5. Helf wrote When the whip-poor will sings, and many others, including Mammas Boy with Huntington .Folio size with music. NORTON GEO. & WADE H.A.:  I Looked Just Once and What I Saw Was Quite Enough for Me.
Sysney, Alberts. c 1912 With a brown solid colour cover and the titles reversed out and including a large face of the performer Harry Burgess. Burgess who sadly remains obscure, sang this song in the William Anderson directed show : A Day at the Races. Anderson was an early Australian theatre and film producer. Likely to be no later than 1912. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

ARTHURS GEORGE & LAWRANCE ALF J.:  I Want to Live in Brittany.
Melbourne, Dinsdale. C Mid 1900's. With a blue lettered cover of titles and also a photograph of the singer Violet Carmen dressed as a Breton milk maid. George Arthurs(1875 -1944) usually with other partners was responsible for some of the great songs of the music hall, Joshua, I want to Sing in the Opera, A Little of What You Fancy and with Kenneth Lyle wrote Jolly Good Luck to Girl Who Loves a Soldier and Here We are Again. this time he wrote with Alf J. Lawrence ( died 1955) The song was featured by Violet Carmen and with writer Alf J. Lawrance on piano which must mean that composer Lawrance came over to Australia though I have been unable to find any information on Miss Carmen. Folio with music. A little lightly spotted not affecting else Good .

FOX FRANK H.:  If I Could Meet the Fellow That Started Ragtime
Sydney ,Alberts . 1914. With a colour illustrated cover by A Morrow showing the un-named female lead of the Pantomime Aladdin produced by Lester Brown and with musical direction by Wynne Jones . The song was actually sung by Edward Stanley in this Sydney pantomime at the very start of the Great War. . Folio size with music. Condition VG.

Sydney , D. Davis & Son . 1911. With a colour front cover of a band stand and a band playing on the stand. Featured with immense success in J.C. Williamsons pantomime .Puss In Boots which I believe to be the Melbourne 1912 Puss in Boots which starred Violet Lorraine then considered London's finest principal boy and George Miller, written by George Dix.. J.C Williamson appears to have also acquired Theatrical and music hall rights to this famous song in Australia. Originally published by Ted Snyder in New York in 1911 and of course was a world wide hit . Folio size with music. Condition VG .

BERLIN IRVING & SNYDER TED.:  I Want to Be in Dixie.
Sydney, D. Davis & Melbourne , Allans. 1912. With a blue and orange front cover of a small riverboat on the probably the Mississipi. .Irving Berlin (1888-1989). This famous Berlin & Snyder song was listed by Kilgariff as a Core song of popular music and certainly it was sung by an extraordinary list from the American Octette, May Irwin, Ella Retford in Britain alone. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

Mills(1871-1919) and Bennett Scott( 1875-1930 ) wrote All the Nice Girls Love a Sailor(1909)whilst Bennett Scott wrote Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty. Folio size with music .Condition VG.

MELLOR TOM,LAWRENCE ALF.J. & GIFFORD HARRY.:  Grow Little Mushroom Grow.
Melbourne ,Allans . 1906. With a blue lettered cover with some ornamentation and blue photographic portrait by Talma of the singer Miss Elsa Langley . originally published by Francis,Day & Hunter. Harry Gifford (died 1960) wrote the music to almost a dozen songs with She sells sea shells(1908) perhaps his best remembered. Often he wrote with Alf J. Lawrence ( died 1955) and on this occasion Tom Mellor(1880-1926) whose most notable song was I Wouldn't Leave My Little Wooden Hut for You ( 1896). Sadly I can find no note of Elsa Langley. Condition VG .

SLATER JOE.:  A Message from Home .
Melbourne , A.M. Dinsdale c 1905. With a green and colour cover and red and blue lettering and with an inset portrait of the singer Marshall Palmer. The composer Joe Slater who also wrote under the pseudonym of Felix Roy was that comparative Australian rarity a popular composer who did well enough to set up his own publishing company and his material was very popular between the beginning of the century and the 1920's . Indeed the owner of the Tivoli Theatre , Harry Rickards, himself a noted early music hall star in London, contracted Slater to produce a series of Tivoli Songsters which were pocket books of lyrics including sketches , that ran well into the mid 1920's.Folio size with music. A tear on inside page with loss of at least one note else condition VG .

A very famous American song used by arrangement with Francis, Day & Hunter in J. C. Williamson's revue Come over Here which starred the English music hall & variety singer Daisy Jerome( b 1881). Condition VG .

Originally published by Leo Feist in New York. The Two Bobs were Bob Alden and Bob Adams ( 1882-1932 & 1876-1948 respectively). Born in America. Pioneer of ragtime from their adopted English home. Popular over 20 years . Folio size with music. Condition VG.
