ALBIEFF A.:  A Russian Nightingale Song ( L'usignuolo).
New York , G. Schirmer .1866. With monochrome frames and ornate lettering on the cover. Hand dated 1887. Dedicated to the noted opera singer Carlotta Patti (1840-89) Italian born soprano who made her career debut in New York in 1861 and then toured Europe and North & South America before retiring to Paris She was said to have a remarkable range and this song was ideally suited to showing that range. Alexander Alabiev(1802-52) was a Russian composer who rather unsuccessfully tried to write popular opera and had more success writing over 100 songs of which the Nightingale was the most famous. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

DELAHANTY & CATLIN.:  Love Among the Roses
Boston, G.D. Russell & Co . ( 1869). With a monochrome lithograph portrait of the noted minstrel performers Delahanty & Hengler by J.E. Baker and printed by the New England Lithographic company. The publishers were actually George & Joseph Russell and they separated in 1877 and Ditson took over their catalogue.Delahanty and Hengler who according to Sigmund Spaeth were one of the most popular of all minstrel and vaudeville teams who danced and sang in blackface,dressed alike and looked like two brothers. They had a string of popular songs between 1869 until the end of the 1870’s. Condition very good. Folio size with music. Condition very good .

New York , Hall & Son .( c 1850). with a delicate monochrome lithograph by the famous American lithographers Sarony & Major of the the conscripts departure and the soldier's return.Written by the British composers and writers Charles W Glover and Charles Jeffreys who appear to have also published a number of songs based on the work of the American author Harriet Beecher Stowe- who wrote Uncle Toms Cabin. Charles W. Glover(1806-1863) was perhaps most famous for writing -The Rose of Tralee. These songs achieved considerable success in both Britain and America.Folio size with music. Condition VG.

Philadelphia, Lee & Walker .1857. With a monochrome lithographic front cover by Sinclair of Philadelphia of a young girl sitting on rocks looking out to sea. Listed in Dichter & Shapiros book as a famous American song. Spaeth agues that the melody for Hawaii's famous Aloha Oe uses Converse's melody. Converse wrote many minstrel songs. BOUCICAULT, D. & COOK J.P.(ARR).:  Pat Malloy .
New York. Wm. A. Pond. ( 1865). with a superb monochrome lithograph front cover by Major and Knap of New York of the famous minstrel performer Dan Bryant and performed at Wallack's Theatre in the Irish Emigrant. Bryant (1833-75) led the noted Bryant's Minstrels during the mid years of the 19th century and in common with many other minstrel performers was originally Irish. His minstrel trou[e had nine years unbroken performances on Broadway from the end of the 1850's. Folio size with music. Small waterstain to bottom and slight wear marks to outer edge else VG.

CARPENTER J.E & GLOVER C.W.:  Do They Think of Me at Home ?
Rochester, Jos. P Shaw. c1860. Although this in fact one of a set of 24 songs and has a monochrome ornate lettered cover , it was promoted by the music publishers, Blodgett & Bradford of Buffalo N.Y. and an unsigned lithographic cover came with the piece showing two very sad young women and their sad eyed dog looking to one side perhaps at a recently deceased relative. Joseph Edward Carpenter(died 1885) was a highly successful lyricist working with many of the major composers of the day . Charles W. Glover(1806-1863) was perhaps most famous for writing -The Rose of Tralee. Sigmund Spaeth reports that this song was very popular in America in the 1860's.Folio size with music.Watermark across the bottom spine corner not really affecting else condition Good.

New York,Wm. A Pond of Broadway .(1868). With a full colour lithograph reversed out cover of the titles by Major & Knapp of New York which primarily promotes the show. Arranged by Charles Coote Jnr for the popular drama After Dark. Kilgarriff considers Tommy Dodd to be a core music hall song. Little is known of Ernee Clarke(1836-98) save that he also wrote the famous cockney song The Chickaleery Cove (1870) for the Great Vance and was himself a performer. Folio size with music. Condition very good. A major early music hall song .

FLORENCE, W.J.:  Johnny Was a Shoemaker.
Boston, Oliver Ditson of Washington Street . ( 1859). With a sepia like lithograph portrait of the performers W.J & Mrs Florence by J.H. Bufford set on a medallion and surrounded by the American flag and atop the picture a small eagle. From a series of four songs entitled the Songs of the Florences. With an authorised edition stamp in one corner. W.J. Florence (1831-91) and his wife( always known as Mrs Florence) were actor/performers between 1850-70’s. W.J. composed Bobbing Along( 1856) Emmer Jane (1862) and Ridin’ in a Railroad Keer(1862) as well as this really still popular song and mostly which Mrs Florence sang.(Please see the playbill for Rory O’More in the Theatre Epemera catalogue) Folio size with music. Condition very good.

LINLEY, G. & THILLON, C.T.:  The Mountain Maid .
Boston, Oliver Ditson of Wahington Square . ( c 1850) . With a sepia colour lithograph front cover of the singer Rosalie Durand in the character of the song and sitting around her sheep on a hillside. George Linley(1798-1865) was a British composer and poet who wrote many notable songs as well as operas, translations, edited and arranged Scottish Melodies. Amongst the songs popular in America,Spaeth mentions Ever of Thee(1852) which was closely associated with the hit play East Lynne.It is likely that the composer was Claude Thomas Thillon who as well as being conductor of Le Havre Philharmonic Society in France was also the husband of the noted soprano Anna Thillon who was at her best between 1845-55 and the song was likely to have been written for her. Sadly the American singer Rosalie A. Durand remains obscure. Folio size with music. Very slightly trimmed through end of pyblishers imprint else condition very good. Rare early coloured sheet.

BENEDICT,J. & LINLEY,G.:  The Peace of Home .
New York,Millet’s Music Salooon . ( c 1850). With a monochrome lithograph front cover portrait by Lewis & Brown of New York of the singer R.G. Paige,who sadly remains obscure. George Linley(1798-1865) was a British composer and poet who wrote many notable songs as well as operas, translations, edited and arranged Scottish Melodies. Amongst the songs popular in America,Spaeth mentions Ever of Thee(1852) which was closely associated with the hit play East Lynne. Julius Benedict( 1804-85) composed many songs, part songs, cantatas and notably operas of which Lily of Killarney, St. Peter and St. Cecilia are considered the best. Originally born in Germany he settled in London in 1835. Travelled to America in 1850 with Jenny Lind and was knighted in 1871.The publishers William E. Millet was only located at that address between 1839-60 . Folio size with music. Slighly worn along edges else condition very good.

BICKNELL GEORGE.:  The Upper Ten.
New York, C.M. Tremaine of Broadway . (1868). With a monochrome engraving of the title ornate comic lettering by Smith & Perring. Sung by the noted music hall star Wm H. Lingard. Lingard(1838-1927) was a British Music Hall performer who in August 1868 took a comedy company direct from London to the Theatre Comique on Broadway . The company was a huge successand Lingard himself had three or four sensational 'hits' -Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines,Walking Down Broadway, The Grecian Bend. The composer, George Bicknell was also responsible for the major song from the first American musical The Black Crook - You Naughty Naughty Men ( 1865).Condition very good.

New York ,William Hall & Sons .1853 . With a monochrome illustrated front cover(unsigned) of two Chinese men putting up a poster advertising the series Musical Chow Chow. This a collection of 6 pieces is primarily for young beginners and this piece is No 1. Francis H. Brown wrote The Indian and His Bride(1844), The song:Will You Come to my Mountain Home (1845) Minnehaha Polka(1856) - all listed in Dichter & Shapiro. In 1866 he wrote the book: Roll of Students of Harvard who served in the Army or Navy of the United States during the War of the rebellion. Folio size with music.Creased along front cover and reinforced down spine & outer edge with paper else condition Good. Rare .

KLEBER H.:  The Pearl Polka .
New York Firth & Ponds and in Pittsburgh H. Kleber .1852. With a monochrome cover by Green of Boston showing four small cupids or fairies scattering petals either side of the composers name. Henry Kleber composed the 1881 President Garfield's Funeral March and the Atlantic Telegraph Schottische in 1857. He was also an early co-publisher of Stephen Foster's songs.Folio size with music. Paper strengthened (old) around the outer edges without unduly affecting.

HAYS, WILL S.:  Nora O'neale .
New York J.D. Peters.1866. With a monochrome lithographic portrait of a pensive Nora by Ratellier of New York. Listed in Dichter & Shapiros book as a famous American song. Spaeth indicates that Hays (1837-1907 wrote more than 300 songs and is reported to have sold 20 million sheets of his music starting in 1862 with Evangeline. In 1866 he had three hit songs with the other two selling in excess of 300,000 each. Folio size with music. Condition VG.

HEMPSTED, H.N.:  The Light Guard Quickstep .
Milwaukee, H.N. Hempsted .1859. With a magnificent colour lithograph by Sarony ,Major & Knapp of four soldiers of the Milwaukee Light Guard in the foreground and a fifth soldier in the background by some tents. Seemingly dedicated to Capt. J .C. Starkweather. The composer /publisher Hempsted dedicated the piece to the Light Guard. Hempsted was only located at this address between 1856-7, though his company continued to trade until 1888.Folio size with music. The music well used, repaired and paper reinforced along outer edge. Illustrated lithograph cover is however in very good condition.

MORRIS & HORN.:  Through the Streets of New York City.
Boston , Oliver Ditson of Washington Street .( 1853). With an ornate monochrome mainly lettered cover but with much small illustration by Greene . Subtitled a New York Carol and a Northern refrain.General George P. Morris(1802-64) wrote the words of Woodman Spare that Tree(1837)provided lyrics for Stephen Foster’s first published song (1844) and He and C.E. Horn wrote in 1858 On the Lake where Drooped the Willow and in 1861 Morris wrote 2 succesful songs with J.R. Thomas. In 1861 Charles Edward Horn ( 1786-1849) arrived in America in 1833 having written Cherry Ripe(1824) for Vestris and also I’ve Been a Roamin but for this song(and again in 1858) Morris must have used his music posthumously. Folio size with music. Condition very good .

Boston ,G.D. Russell & Co .( 1865). With an ornate lettered cover engraved by Greene of Boston. This is one of 6 songs sung by Mdme Parepa at her Bateman produced Concert tour of America, and they are published by Russel and listed on the front cover. This tour and song was prior or during Euphrosyne Parepa- Rosa's marriage to Carl Rosa in February 1867 and whilst they were touring America. Afterwards they set up their famous Opera Company and stayed for a further four years.Folio size with music. Condition VG .

Queen and printed by Duval of two young women listening to an older man read from a book in their sitting room. The arranger J.R. Ling adapted a German melody to fit the words of this sacred ballad. The publisher Augustus Fiot was only at this address between 1840-55. Condition VG .
