London, Shapiro,Von Tilzer Music. 1907 With monochrome lettered cover with some ornate scroll work and an inset monochrome photographic portrait of the noted music hall performer George Lashwood(1863-1942) who started his career singing jaunty patriotic songs after his London debut in 1889. He then sang After the Ball (was over) by Chas.K.Harris which was a huge hit in America primarily for May Irwin and in Britain for Lashwood . Kilgarriff lists over a page of songs. With a monochrome front cover illustration of the lady in question by Sidney Kent and made famous by the American Ragtime Octet, Ida Barr,Clarice Mayne and the writers themselves. Nat Ayer (1887-1952) and A Seymour Brown (1885-1947) and the original version was first published in 1910. Folio size with music. A printers crease across illustration not badly intruding and somewhat worn along the edges else condition good. A very famous song.

London ,Feldman & Co . c1906. With a black and white cover and featuring a portrait of the noted performer Clarice Mayne(1886-1966). The beautiful Miss Mayne had an enduring marital as well as theatrical partnership with the composer and her accompanist James W. Tate who she 'scornfully' referred to as 'That' on stage. She later married one of the Crazy Gang Teddy Knox. Kilgarriff lists well over 50 published songs with Joshu-a a notable amongst many major songs.Folio size with music. Condition VG .

SLATER WHITSON BETH.:  When I Met You Last Night in Dreamland.
London ,Francis, Day & Hunter. 1911. With a monochrome lettered cover and a centred photographic portrait of the singer Lee White. The composer Beth Slater Whitson(1879-1930) wrote at least two most notable songs Let Me Call You Sweetheart( 1910) and Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland(1909) and this was clearly a follow up. The singer Miss Lee White(1886-1927) who starred in the 1914 Alhambra Revue Not Likely and made the song All Aboard for Dixie Land extremely well known in London . Lee White has 15 songs from her repertoire listed in Kilgarriff. Folio with music Condition VG.

MACK CECIL & VON TILZER ALBERT::  Teasing.
London, Francis Day and Hunter. 1904. With a monochrome photographic portrait of the noted singer Ellaline Terris(1871-1971) and featured by her in the London musical comedy The Catch of the Season. Terriss was hugely popular between 1895 and 1914 and especially with Seymour Hicks in more than 9 smash hit musicals. She also switched easily between musical comedy and the music hall particularly when singing the world wide hit Honeysuckle and the Bee.Folio with music. London Reynolds & Co. 1924. With red and green lettered cover with a b & w photograph of the performer Kathleen Burchell . Described as the plaint of a London serving maid, this is a monologue with musical accompaniment that the publishing company Reynolds specialised in and which in the first thirty years of the 20th century was hugely popular. This is the only item mentioned in Kilgarriff for the composers and the performer Burchell. Folio with music Condition Good/VG.

MURRAY FRED , HILBURY CHARLES & LYLE KENNETH.:  He Took His Little Mary on the Ocean.
London, Francis, Day & Hunter. 1908. With a monochrome cover of two major cartons illustrating the lyric by Sidney Kent. The composer Kenneth Lyle wrote the music for 6 listed songs including Jolly Good Luck to the Girl Who Loves a Soldier, The Army of Today's Alright and also Here we are,Here We Are,Here We Are Again but not this song. The lyricists Charles Hilbury has only one song listed in Kilgarriff and that is Oh,Amelia ,co written with Fred Murray(died 1922) has over half a page of lyrics including several major songs for Harry Champion- Boiled Beef and Carrots,Henerey the Eighth I am, for Vesta Victoria- Old Man's darling, Our Lodgers such a Nice Young Man and many more but this one again is not listed. The song was sung by Charles Stevens(1854-1910) who only has 5 songs from his published repertoire , listed by Kilgarriff and not this one. Folio with music Condition VG .

London Feldman & Co . 1921 With a blue lettered and titled cover and a sepia inset portrait of the famous composer and in this case singer Nat Ayer(1887-1952). Little is known of the early musical and performance career in America but he arrived in England in 1911 with the American Ragtime Octet and stayed to write If you were the only Girl in the World. BARRETT & DAREWSKI::  I Used to Sigh for the Silvery Moon.
London, Francis Day and Hunter. 1909. . With a monochrome photographic portrait of the performer G.H. Elliott (1884-1962) who was universally known as the Chocolate Coloured Coon and sang rather romantic plantation, minstrel and just plain romantic songs, blackface. Elliott was hugely popular picking up on the style and some of the songs of Eugene Stratton including most famously Lily of Laguna & Little Dolly Daydream both written by Leslie Stuart. His own most famous song was I used to Sigh for the Silvery Moon. He continued as music hall gave way to variety and continued topping the bill until the start of the 1950's. The writers Lester Barrett (died 1924) was the brother of Leslie Stuart and the bandleader composer Herman Darewski(1883-1947). Folio size with music. A little worn along the edges with no loss so condition good. A noted performer with one his most noted songs.

London, B. Feldman . 1917. With a monochrome lettered cover and a photograph of the performer Daisy Dormer. Daisy Dormer(1883-1947) who sang the song and Kilgariff lists almost a page of her material that was published pre 1920. Originally published in New York by Jerome H. Remick, Dave Radford(born 1884) has one other song listed in Kilgarriff, It's Tulip Time in Holland also to music by Richard Whiting. Small repaired tear on outer edge and a very few spots of foxing else condition Good.

London B. Feldman . 1917. With a monochrome cover including photographs of the singers Ethel Mayne, Kitty Colyer ,Rene Ralph and Maud Esmond . Sadly Kilgarriff only has listings for Maud Esmond and he lists 5 of her repertoire that was published.Having said that the song is an extremely notable song and the American singers Fanny Brice and also Al Jolson are listed by Kilgariff as the performers of this notable core song in 1917. London, a Pirated copy. C 1904. With a much clearer image taken from the original cover of the version featuring Madge Lessing as the singer which had a young man playing 'Taps' and the a monochrome photograph of Lessing dressed in the uniform of the recently finished Boer War. The song was made very notable by Hamilton Hill. This is an example of the cheap copies of published songs that were sold on the streets and were pirated copies paying no royalties Folio size with music. A small piece of music on the very last line of pages 2 & 3 missing else condition Good.

VAN ALSTYNE EGBERT & WILIAMS HARRY H.:  In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree.
London ,Francis, Day & Hunter .1905. Ornate lettered covers and complete with an inside back page version for a male quartet. Originally written in America and published there by Shapiro Remick, though the copyright was held by Francis, Day & Hunter in the USA. It was made famous in Britain by Nora Bayes ( c 1880-1928) born in Milwaukee and although a major Vaudeville star in America, she was not an enormous success during her early visits including 1905 when she would have sung this song. She and the song persisted and eventually both won through, the song much quicker than her success, which came in 1923. Condition VG.

London Francis,Day & Hunter 1912. Monochrome lettered cover and two inset b & w photographs of Charles S. Reid at the piano and the performers the famous American Ragtime Octette Wolfe Gilbert (1886-1970) & Lewis Muir (1884-1950) wrote several great songs including Ramona, Ragtime Cowboy Joe and together, Take me to That Swanee Shore, Waiting for the Robert E. Lee and Hitchy Koo. Muir brought the Octet to London and they were a jazz sensation. Folio with music. A little worn along outer edges to no loss else condition Good.

DAVID,LEE & FRAGSON.:  Hullo! Hullo! Who's Your Lady Friend?
London, Feldman and Co. 1913. With a monochrome illustration by Sydney Kent of a group of soldiers as upon this occasion the singers were The Soldiers of The King. Most famously this song was the property of one of its composers Harry Fragson (1869-1913) who was major star during the first years of the century being able to perform fluently on the British Halls and the French Music Halls in either language. Sadly his deranged father shot him at the peak of his fame. Folio size with music. Condition very good .

LEO FRANK.:  Beauty of the Guards( You Should See Me on Parade).
London, Star Music. 1912. With a monochrome printed cover including a small photographic portrait of composer Leo and an inset photograph of Bastow in character. Composer/singer Frank Leo (1874-1940) who wrote mainly between the 1890's- 1920. Amongst his 28 songs listed in Kilgarriff are Where Do Flies Go in the Winter Time with Sam Mayo in 1919& Can't You Go Further than That in the 1890's for Wilkie Bard. George Bastow(1872-1914) who was one of those performers who was known almost solely for a major song, The Galloping Major. This one echoes that earlier success in content. Light remnants of a price label on leg of portrait hardly visible and rather worn down spine and small neatly repaired tears else Good.

London Francis Day & Hunter 1904 . Lettered titles and featured by Frank Coyne (1871-1943) and not of course the earlier and more famous Fred Coyne. This one has just one entry in Kilgarriff, though Theodore Felstead( in his book) recalls a very funny Frank Coyne song entitled You've Got a Long Way to Go. Folio with Music Condition VG.

GODFREY FRED & SHERIDAN MARK.:  Who Were You with Last Night?
Melbourne , Stanley Mullen. 1912. With a colour lettered cover including a blue coloured photograph of the Australian singer Pip Powell who sang this famous song in the Melbourne pantomime Puss In Boots. The song was published under licence from the London publisher Feldman and of course was made famous by Mark Sheridan who also co-wrote the song. Pip Powell made his Australian stage debut in 1911 in the comic part of Mrs Sinbad in Sinbad the Sailor panto in Melbourne and in 1912 he was again prominent supporting Violet Lorraine in Puss in Boots, he was King Grabbus. Condition VG.

THORN GEOFFREY::  The Parson & the Clerk.
London, Ascherberg, Hopwood and Crew. 1906. With an unsigned monochrome cover of the two main characters of the song, though actually drawn by Concanen. Sung by the Great(G.H.) Macdermott(1845-1901).Geoffrey Thorn(1843-1905) was the pseudonym of Charles Townley but it was as Thorn that his most famous songs were written including We Have the Men,We Have the Money(1882) and who Killed Cock Warren(1885) . The first named was a MacDermott special warning the Russians to stay out of Constantinople and the latter brought the Commissioner of Police to resignation over his failure to catch Jack the Ripper. There is superb wax seal of the music seller Allen's of Sydney in the top right corner. Folio size with music. Very small tear at bottom r/h corner otherwise condition very good.

GRAFTON GERALD & LAUDER HARRY.:  Fou the Noo Or Something in the Bottle for the Morning.
London, Francis Day & Hunter. 1905. With a monochrome printed cover of a Scottish thistle and inset a portrait of the star himself and below his name Harry Lauder. Harry Lauder (1870-1950) who epitomises the classic theatrical "Scotsman" with kilt, nobbly stick and in this case a succession of marvellous songs that not only appeal to Celts all over the world but almost every other English speaker as well. From his first London success in 1900, he not only scored massively in the British Empire countries but America as well and even toured famously there as late as 1930. This, one of his slightly less famous songs was first performed in 1906 .He wrote countless novels, several autobiographies and in 1919 was knighted for his war work. Lauder wrote most of his own songs with the collaboration of Gerald Grafton, as in this case. Lauder's last very major his song was in 1924 with Keep Right on to the End of the Road. Hand dated by a previous owner 1907.Folio size with music. Condition very good .

London Francis,Day & Hunter. 1906 . With a fascinating early aeroplane cartoon front cover by the notable later illustrator Sidney Kent. Sung by Tom Collins who sadly remains obscure. The composer Harry Leighton(1871-1913) who wrote a number of hit songs including two in 1900 for the cockney comedian Harry Champion, for Joe Archer, Tom Wootwell and he also wrote Action Speaks Louder than Words (1897) for Marie Lloyd. George Everard ( 1873-1907) wrote It's all right in the Summertime and An Old Man's Darling both for Vesta Victoria. Folio size with music. Condition VG .

CASTLING HARRY .:  It's a Grand Old World to Live in .
London, Feldman .1909. Ornate lettered cover and with a large monochrome portrait of the music hall singer, Marguerite Broadfoote who appears to be in pantomime costume. The writer/composer ,Harry Castling (1865-1933) wrote the Music Hall classics-Don't have any more Mrs Moore,Let's all go down the Strand and Just like the Ivy I'll cling to you. Marguerite Broadfoote( died 1915) has a small list of 10 songs from her repertoire published, according to Kilgarrriff. I have further read that she was much admired by the writer Naomi Jacobs and that indeedshe was a successful principal boy and was also known as Margaret according to MacQueen Pope. Folio size with music. Slightly see through paper tape along spine else Good/VG.
