RICHARDSON, JAMES C.  A Compilation of Messages and Papers of the Presidents. 5 Volumes
United States Congress. 1900. Half-Leather. Ex-Library, Volume 4 comprising the 8 years from March 4, 1841 to March 4, 1849. EX-LIBRARY in VERY GOOD condition. Even though this is an ex-library there are no markings on the outside except for some faint traces of a whitish square at the upper left front cover. This is hardly noticeable. Otherwise there are very little signs of library type wear. Pastedown on inside front cover as well as a pocket on last endpage. Bar code sticker on title page with call letters on the copyright page. Ignoring these pastedowns, the book is very attractive with a half leather binding, marbled covers and marbled end papers. Gilt lettering on the spine. Black and white portraits of each president precede their respective sessions. Scuffing and rubbing to the extremities with the leather worn at the hinges and the spine, although still attractive. Corners bumped and beginning to fray. Inner text is clean and still very well bound. Despite the ex-library status, a very attractive book. Volume 5. 12 years (1849-1861, I believe). GOOD+ EX-LIBRARY. Same sort of wear/markings as above with less scuffing. Cover beginning to split along front hinge with the leather beginning to peel. A one inch by half inch piece of leather missing from the top of the spine. The spine also has some small tears in the leather but again, is less scuffed than the previous volume. Despite the splitting cover, the text is tight and well bound. I found only two very small markings in the book (one in pencil and one in blue pen). Still very nice looking. Volume 7, 1869-1881. GOOD EX-LIBRARY. Same wear as volume five with the marbling scuffed through to the white. Edges scuffed. Leather along the spine torn at front hinge from the top to about 2/3 the way down. This is something that could be re-glued. A one inch piece of leather missing from top of spine as well as ¾ inch piece from the bottom of the spine. Well bound, clean and tight. Volume 8, 1881-1889. VERY GOOD EX-LIBRARY. Same general wear as above volumes but without the splitting or tearing. Small chip of leather missing from bottom of spine. Text clean, tight and well bound. Volume 9, 1889-1898. VERY GOOD EX-LIBRARY. Same wear as above with minor fraying at the top of the spine. Text clean, tight and well bound. Various/No Jacket.
