Cowan, John, The Science of a New Life
Cowan, John
The Science of a New Life
New York, Cowan and Company, 1873. Cloth. 405 pp. plus ads and testimonials. Black and white illustration throughout. A medical and philosophical treatise on sex and reproduction in humans, discussing anatomy and physiology as well as pregnancy, etc. Cowan also discusses "amativeness" and excessive sex, in euphemistic terms, blaming alcohol, too much meat, coffee and other substances for increase in sexual desires. This, according to him, is especially true of women, who as well as facing the perils of eating the wrong food, must also consider what they wear. Apparently constrictive clothing such as corset and girdles causes "unnatural excitement of the sexual system." (And don't wear your hair too tight either). GOOD condition. Minor fading and soiling, with some scuffing. Cloth frayed and worn along the extremities. Light toning in the interior. Good .
