A recounting of Captain West's experiences as a whaler, first out of New Bedford and then at the Bering Straits fisheries. With the decline of whaling, West became the captain of a steamer and pioneered the hazardous Alaskan coastal trade. This work chronicles all those experiences. GOOD jacket on a VERY GOOD book. Minor soiling to the jacket, with some wrinkling, scuffing and fading. A 2 ½ inch tear present along the upper flap hinge, with a 1 ½ inch tear along the lower front flap hinge. Mostly minor scuffing to the extremities. Faint dampstaining present along the jacket spine, mostly visible on the interior. General fading to the book, especially along the edges.
