| CLUM, JOHN M. He's All Man: Learning Masculinity, Gayness, and Love from American Movies New York, Palgrave. 2002, First Edition, First Printing. (ISBN: 031224035X) Hard Cover with dust jacket, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xxxii, 221 pp. [10] pp. of plates, illus. bib. notes, indexes; 25 cm. Tight, clean copy. Top edge bumped. Stated "First Edition: April 2002." Dust jacket protected in a mylar book cover. "'He's All Man' is John M. Clum's insightful, biting and characteristically humorous analysis of the central myths of American manhood that have been propagated by Hollywood films and dramatized by our major playwrights. In the politically incorrect way he dared to ask 'What happened to gay irony?' in Something for the Boys, Clum now dares to ask the explosive question 'What is the vision of the American Male that Hollywood has sold us?' 'He's All Man' examines the ways in which homoeroticism has been part of the myth of American manhood, wrapping itself around cowboy, soldier, and gangster legends as they fuse to create a picture of the quintessential American male. From Audie Murphy to The Sands of Iwo Jima and The Maltese Falcon, Clum takes us on a tour of the roughs, the toughs, and the fluffs that swagger, strut, and pirouette their way through the Hollywood Masculinity Machine and the ways in which gay filmmakers have bought into the Hollywood vision of manhood and romance. Just as Something for the Boys raised hackles and caused controversy over Lorenz Hart's lyrics and Ethel Merman's lungs, 'He's All Man' will surely do the same for Edward G. Robinson's cigar and Marlon Brando's t-shirt. / John Clum is Professor of the Practice of Drama and of English at Duke University. He is the author of Something for the Boys, Still Acting Gay, and numerous plays produced around the country and in New York City. He lives in Durham, NC, Baltimore, MD, and London." - Publisher. | MORIMURA, YASUMASA; KUSPIT, DONALD (INTRODUCTION BY) Daughter of Art History: Photographs by Yasumasa Morimura New York, Aperture. 2003, First Edition, First Printing. (ISBN: 1931788073) Hard Cover , 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Collectible, Pictorial boards, 128 pp. col. illus. bib. notes; 27 cm. BRAND NEW. Stated "First Edition." OVERSIZE! No priority/air, except by special arrangement. "Daughter of Art History is an elaborate deception a fake art-history in which Rembrandt, Jesus Christ, Van Gogh, the Mona Lisa, Frida Kahlo, and Cindy Sherman have all been hijacked and replaced. Where once the viewer's gaze met the eyes of a reclining female nude, a European master painter, or a Western religious icon, that gaze is now returned by the hauntingly photo-realistic eyes of a Japanese man. Since the early eighties, Yasumasa Morimura has been invading the established canon of Western art - offering both wry commentary and loving tribute - by replacing the figures and faces of its well-known masterpieces with his own. After painstakingly recreating the surroundings of some of art-history's most iconic paintings, like a chameleon, Morimura assumes their subjects' identities through elaborate makeup and costume, and inserts himself into the scene. To view the resulting photographs is an uncanny experience. Daughter of Art History begins with a foreword by renowned art historian Donald Kuspit who describes Morimura's art as 'a kind of Wagnerian Gesamtkunstwerk, in which painting, sculpture, and photography form a seamless conceptual whole. His photographs may be mock masterpieces, but they are nonetheless masterpieces, for they show mastery of three mediums usually regarded as irreconcilable.' / Yasumasa Morimura has shown extensively in international solo exhibitions, and his work is in the collections of many museums including Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art." - Publisher.
