Bernhard Bernson (1888-1963), dramatist, lived in Switzerland since 1933, later moved to South France and died in Paris. Book condition: black cardboard cover somewhat worn: tears (small pieces missing) to backstrip head and tail, small paper cracks in few points along spine and up at front fore edge; gilt titles faded; textblock darkened; small burn mark to textblock's bottom fore edges; pencil & pen nib marks to several pages. good(-). Slight transparent fluid stains over text block (hardly noticed), foxing/light brown stains. Some fading. The play was published first in 1785-1786, then it was published in 1787 - the same year it was performed in Hamburg. Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759–1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and dramatist.This play is one of Schiller's most important creations. Based (loosely) on the events surrounding the real Don Carlos of Spain, Schiller's Don Carlos is attempting to free Flanders from tyranny of King Phillip. The Marquis Posa's famous speech to the king shows Schiller's strong belief in personal freedom and democracy. Good +.
