Erster Band: 1784, 179 pp; Zweyter Band: 1785, 168 pp; Dritter Band: 1788, 180 pp. Title vignettes by Jakob Adam and Anton von Weinkopf. Johannes Aloys Blumauer (1755-1798) was an Ausrian writer and poet, who used the pseudonym A. Auer and Aloys Obermayer. The original Virgils Aeneis is the Aeneid - the Roman Empire's national epic - written by Publius Vergilius Maro, (70-19 BC), an ancient Roman poet. The Aeneid tells about the hero Aeneas - a Trojan warrior, son of prince Anchises and the goddess Aphrodite (Venus) - and his Odyssey from Troy to Italy, being carried away to Cartage and welcomed by queen Dido who fell in love with him, yet, when Gods recall Aeneas to go to Italy, Dido is being left to die. In Italy Aeneas consults with Cumaean Sibyl, who conducts him through Hell, there he meets Dido and his dead father, and reveals his destiny to him. Aeneas is reborn as the creator of Imperial Rome. Most of all Aeneas figure is known for being devout to Gods. Blumauer's Virgils Aeneis is a travesty on the ancient mythology, goes against the Catholic church and its ceremonies and Orders, the Jesuits and the papacy. Blumauer himself was a member of the Jesuit Order. His work, which published on the second half of the 18th century, got very popular, following the Josephinism's secularizing trends at the Enlightment era in Europe. The Austrian literature was also influenced by the criticism towards clergy and embraced satire as a pupular genre. Book condition: hard paper with some shelfwear signs, some dried water stains, fading and rubbing at foredges. Textblocks of all three books are clean, mild fading and mild foxing/staining.
