Vol. II: 251 pp; Vol. III: 288 pp. Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) was an English jurist, philosopher and reformer, a political radical and a leading theorist in Anglo-American philosophy of law. Known mainly as an early follower of utilitarianism, who influenced the development of liberalism. He was trained as a lawyer but became too frustrated with the complexity of the English legal code, so instead of practising he wrote about the law in trying to change and improve it. As a socialist he argued in favour of human rights, animal rights, freedom of expression and economical issues. Bentham believed that education should be available for everybody, without the restrictions of wealth or religion. After his death, as requested in his will, his body was preserved and displayed wearing his clothes and carrying his stick, at University College London.
