	AUERBACH, ISAAC LEVIN Predigt am Freudenfeste Der Tora Gehalten in Einem Privat Tempel Zu Berlin Berlin, 1815. Rebound - Hard Cover, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Ex-Library, "Zum besten des vaterlaendischen vereins". 20 pp. A sermon given in the first ever Jewish reform synagogue in Berlin in 1815. This episode ended with the authorities banning this form of worship which became popular, partly because of the fierce objectrion of the Orthodox Jews. The author was part of a small group of young Berlin Jews, who started the synagogue in the private house of Israel Jacobson. As the numbers of worshipers grew the prayers moved to a larger place - the first ever Reform Synagogue. A highly important milestone in the history of Jewish religion in general and German Jewry in particular. CONDITION: Rebound in hard cover. first and last page soiled, as are corners of other pages. Ex-Library, Among the most important incidents in the history of Reform Judaism are the rabbinical conferences held at Brunswick, Frankfurt am Main and Breslau, in 1844, 1845, and 1846. In the winter of 1844 Dr. Sigismund Stern delivered before the Culture Society of Berlin a course of eight lectures on the subject "The Mission of Judaism and the Jew in the Present." In these lectures he pleaded for some action that would stem the tide of indifference and bring back to the Synagogue the great number who had drifted away because its religious practises and ceremonies had ceased to satisfy them.
