Ex-Library, "From The Heart's Depth a Book of Suffering and Struggle" - volume II of an illustrated Yiddish book by the important jewish artist, Saul Raskin. This rare book is a collection of writings (translations) of several writers like Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, Theodor Rooswelt, Goethe, Nietzche, Tolstoy, Cicero, Shalom Aleykhem, Bialik, Peretz Isaac Leib, Steinberg etc. The writings are dealing with suffering and struggle. Title pages are in Yiddish and English. Edited by B. Vladeck. Includes many black & white drawings by Saul Raskin and some reproductions of several artists like Rodin and Durer. Also contains illustrated initials. Uncut Pages (pages with edges that are not cut together to fit exactly). Binding: Hard Cover- Saul Raskin was born in 1878 in Nogaysk, Russia. At the age of 15 he studied lithography in Odessa and later attended art academies in Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland. After migrating to America in 1904 he became a multifaceted artist and produced etchings, paintings, watercolors and even cartoons. He became a famed illustrator of Jewish subjects and was also a lecturer, writer and teacher. CONDITION: Very good- Ex-library copy with library marks on spine and on front endpaper; with slight browning by time all over the book; minor foxing on some pages; 1 page is detached, but present; endpapers are somewhat foxed and browned. Binding: Good- cloth binding and spine are somewhat worn, stained/foxed with small chips and tears. NOTE: Please see photos for details and condition, and feel free to inquire if in doubt. Dark red cloth covered boards with black title embossed on front cover. Very Good.
