German lang. 164 pp. A translation (by Klabund) from French of "Aventures prodigieuses de Tartarin de Tarasconby" - Tartarin of Tarascon - of Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897). Vignettes and illustrations by George Grosz (1893 –1959) of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity group. Known for his savagely caricatural drawings of Berlin life and the Weimar Republic in the 1920s. He was an anti Nazi and left Germany in to New York in 1932(Wikipedia). Second Edition [1921] of 6.-10. thousend. Original colourfully illustrated cloth cover. Book condition: backstrip cloth darkened with some foxing; rubbing tears to spine's head & tail edges; some foxing/staining to cover and textblock fore edges; foxing to illustrated pastedowns and endpapers, and to free flyleaf; 1.5 intch tear near head corner of p.97/98; very mild foxing to last 3 pp.; slight fading to textblock. Zur Kultur- und Sittengeschichte in Wort und Bild. Vierter Band: Der Theuerdank nach der Ausgabe von 1519. Thomas Murner's Schriften und sein Leben, nebst dessen Narrenbeschwoerung und der Spottschrift: Ob der Koenig von England ein Luegner sen oder der Luther. Mit den saemmtlichen 118 Holzschnitten in verjuengtem Massstabe und mit 96 Abbildungen auf 32 Tafeln.13 bis 16 Zelle. Thomas Murner (1475-1537) was a German satirist. Born at Oberehnheim near Strasbourg. Joined the Franciscan order in which he gradually evolved to high positions. Entitled "poeta laureatus" by Emperor Maximilian I and became "doctor theologiae". At age of 43 he began studying jurisprudence and ended with degree of doctor juris at the University of Basel. Murner was an energetic and passionate character, but made enemies wherever he went. He wrote satires against the corrupt Reformation and Martin Luther. His most powerful satire is Von dem grossen Lutherischen Narren wie ihn Doctor Murner beschworen hat. Others included Die Narrenbeschwoerung (1512); Die Schelmenzunft (1512); Die Gaeuchmatt, which treats of enamoured fools (1519), and a translation of Virgil's Aeneid (1515) dedicated to the emperor Maximilian I. Murner also wrote the humorous Chartiludium logicae (1507) and the Ludus studentum Friburgensium (1511), besides a translation of Justinian's Institutiones (1519). Book condition: rebound using backstrip label of old binding; small tears to head joints; endpaper & pastedowns paper torn along hinges; light brown spots of foxing/staining to textblock; some leaves remained unopened; pages are cut, yet some pages are cut shorter than others and some leaves foredges and margins darkened - looks like originally bound in that way and not turned as result of wear/use.
