Copy no' 138 of a 250 copies limited edition that was designed and signed by Marcus Behmer. Entitled "Ecclesiastes Or The Preaching Of Solomon". Title-page, opening initial & colophon vignette were designed by Behmer and cut in wood by Eduard Klippel. 20 pp. Uncut papers. MARCUS BEHMER (1879 - 1958) was born and worked as a designer in Weimar. He illustrated many books and had a small output of fine original etchings, many of which have become scarce. CONDITION: Very good- slight browning by time. Binding: Good- cover is slightly worn, stained/foxed and faded; cloth spine is worn with some tears and chips, a small part of spine is missing. Ex-Library, Salomon Formstecher, 1808-1889, was a German rabbi, poet and philosopher of religion. Considered one of the intellectual fathers of the Jewish Reform movement in Germany in the 19th Century. Was Rabbi of Offenbach, and modernized the Jewish community in Offenbach and the surrounding area. In 1841 he published the first philosophical work of the Reform Movement, The Religion of the Spirit. This book established his reputation as "the first modern historian of Judaism." He took a leading role in early conferences of the Reform movement. The religious strife and positions of the reform process are reflected in his novel Buchstein and Cohnberg. He was the first Jewish citizen from Offenbach to be awarded "honorary citizen" in 1882. Ex-Library, Very rare and important book related to German Jewish history, which led to led to the founding of the League of German-Jewish Communities in 1872! Emil Lehmann (1829-1898) was a Dresden lawyer and the first Jew to be elected (in 1865) to Dresden's municipal council. He held that seat until 1883, serving much of this time as first or second vice-president of that chamber. From 1875 to 1881, he also held a seat in the lower house of the Saxon state parliament. Head of Dresden's Jewish community [Gemeinde] from 1869. This book, "Hear, Israel!" (Shema Yisrael, as in the Jewish prayer), led to the founding of the League of German-Jewish Communities in 1872. His efforts contributed to the formal emancipation of the Jews in Saxony on December 3, 1868 - before passage of the Law of Religious Freedom by the North German Reichstag (July 3, 1869). Considered one of the intellectual fathers of the Jewish Reform movement in Germany in the 19th Century. Was Rabbi of Offenbach, and modernized the Jewish community in Offenbach and the surrounding area. In 1841 he published the first philosophical work of the Reform Movement, The Religion of the Spirit. This book established his reputation as "the first modern historian of Judaism." He took a leading role in early conferences of the Reform movement. The religious strife and positions of the reform process are reflected in his novel Buchstein and Cohnberg. He was the first Jewish citizen from Offenbach to be awarded "honorary citizen" in 1882. Emil Lehmann (1829-1898) was a Dresden lawyer and the first Jew to be elected (in 1865) to Dresden's municipal council. He held that seat until 1883, serving much of this time as first or second vice-president of that chamber. From 1875 to 1881, he also held a seat in the lower house of the Saxon state parliament. Head of Dresden's Jewish community [Gemeinde] from 1869. This book, "Hear, Israel!" (Shema Yisrael, as in the Jewish prayer), led to the founding of the League of German-Jewish Communities in 1872. His efforts contributed to the formal emancipation of the Jews in Saxony on December 3, 1868 - before passage of the Law of Religious Freedom by the North German Reichstag (July 3, 1869).
