	VARIOUS WRITERS Birobidzhan Almanach 1-2 Birobidzhan, Gegntlechter. 1946, First Edition. Paperback, 8vo - over 7Â¾" - 9Â¾" tall. "Birobidzhan Literish-Kinstlerisher Un Gezelshaftlech-Politisher Almanach Fun Der Yidisher Autonomer Gegnt 1-2". Yiddish language, 140 pp. Birobidzhan, in the Soviet Far East (5000 miles east to Moscow), was established in 1934 by the Soviet Government in order to create a Jewish Autonomous Region - a homeland for the Soviet Jewry; an experimental alternative to Palestine. During the 1920s and 30s, Jews had come from Lithuania, the US and Argentina to settle in Birobidzhan and work in agriculture, yet by the end of 1930s the experiment of building "Soviet Zion" recognized as a failure. After world war II the idea was revived again bringing many new Jewish settlers to Birobidzhan. This almanac was published during that time. But in 1948, after the establishment of the state of Israel, Stalin decided to destroy all Jewish intellectual and cultural activity in the Soviet Union. During these assaults about 30,000 Judaica books were burned and the Birobidzhan idea of Soviet Zion never recovered. A small lessened Jewish settlement still exists today in Birobidzhan. Book condition: worn; softened paper; fading (darkening) to both cover and textblock; some pen mark to front cover; small tears - mainly to head and tail of backstrip; few mild stains. good(-).
