	KLOPSTOKS (KLOPSTOCK, FRIEDRICH GOTTLIEB) Der Messias. Reuttlingen (Reutlingen), Ben Johann Georg Fleischhanuer. 1776. Hard Cover, 12mo - over 6Â¾" - 7Â¾" tall. Four volumes in two bindings. 336+304pp. 448+316 pp. German language (Gothic script). "Sammlung Der Poetischen Und Prosaichen Schriften Der Schonen Greister in Teutschland. Enthaltend die Schriften Klopstoks." Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (1724â€“1803) was a German poet. "Der Messias" is probably his most famous work. Klopstock started planning "Der Messias" while still studying at the gymnasium. Short while later, as a student of theology at Jena, he elaborated the first three cantos in prose. On 1748, at age 24, 2 years after being removed from Jena university to Leipzig, the first three cantos of the Messias are being anonymously published in the periodical Bremer Beitraege. It was a new era in German literature and Klopstock's name became known. While in Leipzig he wrote a number of odes which added to his publicity. As a private tutor in relatives family he fell in love with a cousin ("Fanny" of his odes) and left Leipzig with his heart broken to Zurich, to visit his friend Bodmer, who helped him get healed. Here Klopstock accepted an invitation, with a view to the completion of the Messias, to settle at Copenhagen with an annual pension by King Frederick V of Denmark. At hamburg, on his way, Klopstock met his wife to be, Margareta (Meta) Mueller, (the "Cidli" of his odes), a great fan of his poetry. Yet, his happiness was short; she died four year later, in 1758, leaving him broken and desperate. His grief is expressed in the fifteenth canto of the Messias. Klopstock remained grieving and depressed for the next few years and his poetry became more vague and distant. On 1872 or 1873, in Hamburg, he managed to complete the last five cantos of "Der Messias". Book condition: hard paper cover shelfworn. Some missing paper pieces pealed off from external layer of backstrip of 1st binding (vol. I & II). 2nd book (vol. III & IV) cover is in a better state, with only few small damaged spots, dew to bumping. Backstrip head, tail edges and joints rubbed. The third volume (1863) deals with the struggle between revelation and paganism. The fourth volume (1865) is a series of separate essays on various subject.
