| ZUNZ, DR. L.; STEINSCHNEIDER, M. Damaskus, ein Wort zur Abwehr Berlin, Julius Springer. 1859, Second Edition. Soft Cover, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. German language. 16 pp. Second edition including detailed list of publications of the author. The Damascus Affair took place in 1840. Damascus Jews were accused of murdering Franciscan Capuchin friar Father Thomas, who, together with his Greek servant, was repoted missing and never seen again. The alleged murder was in order to use the priest's blood for Jewish Passover rituals. Turkish governor and French consul in Damascus believed the accusations and ordered an investigation. Jews confessed under torture and accused other Jews, some of them died under torture, and one (Moses Abulafia) converted to Islam to escape the torture. Other arrests and abusing occurred, deteriorating to 63 Jewish children being held hostage and mob attacks on Jewish communities throughout the Middle East, echoing all over the world. Zunz wrote the article Damaskus, ein Wort der Abwehr, which published in the Leipziger Allgemeine Zeitung. Leopold Zunz (1794-1886), born as Yom Tov Lipmann Tzuntz, was a German Jewish scholar, researcher of Judaism. "The Science of Judaism" includes the history of Jewish literature, religious poetry and the ritual of the synagogue. Together with Eduard Gans and Moses Moser, Zunz founded, in 1819, the association "Verein fuer Cultur und Wissenschaft der Juden", in order "to bring the Jews into harmonious relations with the age and the nations in which they live" through culture and education (regardless their religion, as kind of non-observant Judaism!). The society was active and attracted the best and brightest of persons among the German Jews of that time: Heinrich Heine, Ludwig Markus, David Friedlander, Israel Jacobson, and Lazarus Bendavid. Zunz work made a highly significant contribution to the Science of Judaism. "Damaskus, ein Wort zur Abwehr" was edited by Moritz Steinschneider, an Austrian Jewish bibliographer and Orientalist. Book condition: original soft paper cover stained, few small tears to fore edges (small pieces missing), spine head and tail. Light brown staining / Foxing to all pages of textblock. Good -.
