México, December 23, 1785, Broadside, signed 42cm (worn right margin not affecting text) A decree signed by Viceroy, Joseph de Gonzalez to Bernardo de Galvez (1746-1786) regarding reduction of forces as recommended by royal orders. Galvez had a distinguished career He arrived, for the first time in New Spain in 1762 and in 1769 Gálvez was commissioned to go the northern frontier were be became commandant of military forces in Nueva Vizcaya and Sonora. He led several major expeditions against the Apaches He returned to Spain in 1772 and in 1776 was transferred to the province of Louisiana as colonel of the Louisiana Regiment, becoming governor in 1777. He did much to aid the American patriots before Spain entered the American Revolution. He became governor of Cuba in 1784 and in 1785 he was appointed viceroy of New Spain to succeed his father. He moved to Mexico which was in the throes of famine and disease and used not only the resources of the government but also his personal fortune to help the populace.
