¶ An anthology of 36 poems in praise of women with illustrations by Christy. Christy (1873-1952) made his early reputation during the Spanish American War, producing illustrations for Leslie's Weekly and Scribner's, where the famous Christy girl resulted from his drawing, "the Soldier's Dream." Like the Gibson girl, it came to embody American womanhood: "They represented the awakening female, no longer content to preside over the kitchen, to be forbidden the golf course or the vote. The way Christy drew her, she was popular with the males because of her charm, while the young women liked her because she embodied their dreams of emancipation," S. J. Woolf. Christy said she was "High-bred, aristocratic and dainty though not always silken-skirted; a woman with tremendous self-respect." From then on Christy mainly painted beautiful women for McClure's and other popular magazines. This collection was one of the first of his two books, both published in 1906.
