| CASTEL-BOLOGNESI, ANGELO. ILLUS. KARL GIRARDET. "Voyages au Fleuve des Gazelles, 1856-1857," from Le Tour. du Monde Nouveau Journal des Voyages. 1862. V. Premier Semestre. Paris: Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1862. [385]-397 pp. 4to. Removed. First edition. Illus. with 6 b/w steel engravings and 1 b/w map. A very good copy, scattered foxing.  ¶ Plate on page 396 illustrates stools, headgear, shields, spears, bows and arrows, pots, baskets, calabashes, mortars, pipes, and drums from the Bahr al Ghazal, Sudan. "Castel-Bolognesi describes his departure from Khartoum, his descent of the Blue Nile and arrival at Mandjara, where the two rivers merge to become the Nile. The author speaks about his trip from Khartoum to the interior of Bahr al Ghazal. During his journey, he passed through the villages of the Reeks and the Awan (Dinka) peoples. The Djour tribe is among the most important who live inside Bahr al Ghazal. The Djour (Jur or Jo Luo) and the Dôor (Dor) are constantly fighting. The country of the Dôor is rich in ivory, iron and red copper mostly near Hofrat-el-Nahas. The author met the Gnamgnam (Niam-Niam or Zande), whom Brun-Rollet thought were cannibals and had tails. He describes the Dôor customs and his meeting with people who were black slavers. He relates his trip through Khartoum to reach Cairo, to sell Mr. John Petherick's (the British consul) ivory. After crossing the canal where the Nouers (Nuer)-Chikena live, the group was attacked during the night by hippopotamus, had a skirmish with the natives, and finally arrived at Khartoum."
