According to the preface, the illustrations have been carefully chosen to go with the poems where Baudelaire has made reference to people or to works of art. The colour reproductions mostly of artworks have been tipped in; the others are B&W illustrations. This was the 5th book in the seies of "Poesie" realized by Les Librairies Associés on the designs of Pierre Faucheux in an edition of 6000 copies, numbered from 1 to 6000 with 150 hors commerce copies.
