I have added the original Greek in which the inspired Apostle wrote the passage which forms the text of the sermons, and also some of the versions of it, ending with the Revised of 1881; as it may interest yourself and others to have, in the same volume, some of the various forms through which, in God's providence, this portion of His Word has reached us. ANONYMOUS [HARVEY WALLACE]  Chronicles of Saint Mungo : Or Antiquities and Traditions of Glasgow
John Smith & Son, U.K. 1843. First Edition, Half-Leather /Marbled Paper. Near Very Good/No Jacket. viii, 434 pages, size 7.25 inches tall by 4.25 inches. Illustrated frontispiece. PREFACE ; ' It is perhaps unnecessary to state, that the present volume, consisting of a series of antiquarian and general notices, illustrative of the history of Glasgow, lays claim to no literary merit beyond that of garnering up, in a somewhat novel form, those scattered fragments of knowledge, which, according to Milton, the world does not willingly suffer to perish. The antiquities and traditions of Glasgow, in different points of view, are objects of interest to the Scottish reader. Dating its foundation from a very early period, and bearing a hand in all the most remarkable events connected with civil and ecclesiastical history,-whether in the assertion of the truth and dominion of Popery, or contributing by might and main to its downfal-whether in the, at one time, zealous support of Episcopacy, at another, the waging against it, under the banner of Presbyterianism, the most relentless war,-Glasgow possesses much interest, to which few other towns can lay claim. Always one of the principal cities in Scotland, its rise and progress have been marked by those occurrences which usually characterise places of importance. From perusal, it is trusted, the reader will be able to glean information conducive both to his amusement and instruction. In the Chapter embracing Lives of " Eminent Natives of Glasgow," he will probably be, for the first time, made acquainted with those "sparks of immortality," who, reared amid the same scenes with himself, have more than general claims upon his attention .' Contents : Introduction. Traditionary Account Of The Origin Of The Name Of Glasgow.-Sketch Op The Lite Of St. Mungo Or Kentigern.-Different Orders Of The Ancient Popish Establishment, Chapter I. Ancient Aspect Op The City, Chapter II. Remarkable Old Edifices Formerly Extant, Chapter III. Remarkable Old Edifices Still Extant, Chapter IV. The Leprosy And Plague In Glasgow,Chapter V. The Pretender In Glasgow, Chapter VI. Literary Antlquities Of Glasgow, Chapter VII. Ancient Academy Op The Fine Arts, Chapter VIII. Memorable Riots In Glasgow, Chapter IX. Memorable Fires And Floods, Chapter X. Ancient And Modern Political Constitution Of The City, Chapter XI. Sketch Of The Progress Of Commerce And Manufactures, Chapter XII. Ancient And Modern Navigation Of The Clyde, Chapter XIII. Eminent Natives Of Glasgow, Chapter XIV. Remarkable Public Characters, Chapter XV. Our Ancestors, Appendix. ATTWATER DONALD  Jesus : What he Did What he Said The New Testament Records Put Into Modern English
Burns & Oates, U.K. 1969. First Edition, Hard Cover. Good Plus Plus/No Jacket. 224 pages, size 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches. freedom for scholars to study their content, have always been considered vital if Christ's followers are to remain faithful to the mandate and charge given them through the Apostles at Pentecost. In the same spirit, Christians have always been exhorted to read the Scriptures, to use them for prayer and to draw from them, with the guidance of the teaching Church when necessary, the full meaning of the New Covenant. This has meant the provision of faithful and contemporary translations of the Scriptures for private use and-though in the Catholic Church only recently-for liturgical worship also. This presentation in dignified modern English of the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke combined into one continuous narrative (and separate versions of the Acts of the Apostles and the Fourth Gospel), is offered for those who, while wishing also to read the separate accounts, would appreciate a combination of the synoptic gospels in a form that presents their total content while eliminating repetitions. This enables what one writer said about something to be filled out or made clearer from what another writer said. This in turn makes it easier to get a first general idea of what Matthew, Mark and Luke tell us about Jesus and his teaching than is possible from a reading of each one separately. This combination is followed by Acts, in which Luke tells us about the activities of Peter and Paul and the growth of the young Church. Then, finally, comes John's gospel, different from the other three, which it seems to take for granted the reader will know already. Donald Attwater, a highly and widely respected writer, has used many versions of the New Testament in editing these texts and presenting them afresh in dignified modern English. The gospels are not modern texts and attempts to present them as such by slavishly pursuing modern idiom at every possible point inevitably lose aspects of them which Donald Attwater's sure sense of style and touch have tellingly preserved. This is a book any Christian could use to acquaint himself with, or to recall, the acts and words from which Christianity developed '. BAIKIE, JAMES  Bible Story : A Connected Narrative Retold From Holy Scripture
A & C Black Ltd, UK, 1923. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth), Illustrated by: Hartley J H. Very Good /Good. Size: 9.25 inches tall by 6.5 inches. xiv, 472 pages and a 2 page catalogue. 'This book aims at telling, simply, straightforwardly, and in its true historical order, the story of God's dealings with men which runs through the whole Bible. All that wealth of circumstantial detail, which, however interesting and useful it may be to the scholar, is yet rather an embarassment to one who seeks simply to know what things happened and how, is laid aside ; and the story is told from stage to stage in the order in which it actually occurred, so that the reader may follow it with uninterrupted attention, and with no need of piecing out the partial narrative of one book by the equally partial narrative of another. A section, not strictly Biblical, has been added, in which the course of history between the closing of the Old Testament story and the opening of that of the New Testament is briefly traced ; and this, it is believed, may prove useful 'to those for whom this period has hitherto been simply a blank. The book is illustrated in colour with pictures of incident by Mr. J. H. Hartley, who recently specially visited Palestine for the purpose. Of all books in the World's literature the Bible remains infinitely the greatest, and the most abidingly interesting. It has by far the largest circulation of any book ever published, and it commands the widest range ; while, after so many ages, its appeal to the peoples of all lands is still as vivid and as strong as ever it was. Viewed merely from the standpoint of what constitutes a fascinating and enthralling narrative, no book can pretend to rival it ; and the stories of Joseph and his brethren, of Moses and the Wanderings of Israel, of Joshua, Samson, and the Judges, of Saul, Jonathan and David, remain unmatched for freshness and charm. Above all, the story of the Birth, the Life and the Death of Jesus Christ is full of unrivalled beauty and power, apart altogether from its spiritual significance.' Book - in Very Good bright blue boards with gilt decoration - light marking to the boards and light bumping and rubbing to the extreme ends of the spine and light rubbing to the extreme corners. Contents, light browning to some pages otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Good - some loss and wear to the edges and corners, some grubbiness.
