"A.K.K."  Science of Gambling
Pendulum Publications Ltd, U.K. 1945. First Issued, Hard Cover, Illustrated by: Walker Jos. Near Fine/Good Plus Plus. viii, 164 pages, size 7 inches tall by 5 inches. Illustrated with black and white line cartoon drawings by Jos Walker. ' It is with mixed feelings that I approach this subject. For some reason or other gambling has been regarded as a vice and not a fit subject for study and research. I am endeavouring here to dispel this idea, and in case the reader finds me too earnest and serious, he will find the atmosphere brightened by a few drawings by that well-known Cartoonist to whom I am greatly indebted-Mr, Jos. Walker. Those who frown upon gambling will find plenty to criticise in my remark's. Others will find the study of the mechanism of the various sports and gambles a useful eye-opener to them. Yet if you are merely amused at these attempts to put gambling upon a really scientific basis, this book will have served at least some useful purpose .' A. K. K. Contents : Chapter I. AGRICOLA GEORGIUS [TRANSLATED BY HERBERT CLARK HOOVER AND LOU HENRY HOOVER]  De Re Metallica : Translated From The First Latin Edition Of 1556
Dover Publications, US, 1950. First Thus, Hard Cover. Fine/Near Very Good. PLEASE EMAIL FOR SHIPPING OUTSIDE THE UK. Biographical Introduction, Annotations, And Appendices Upon The Development Of Mining Methods, Metallurgical Processes, Geology, Mineralogy & Mining Law From The Earliest Times To The 16th Century. ii, 640 pages, size 11 inches tall by 6.75 inches. 289 illustrattions and 4 facsimile pages from the Latin original. 'Originally published in 1556, Agricola's De Re Metallica was the first book on mining to be based on field research and observation-what today would be called the "scientific approach." It was therefore the first book to offer detailed technical drawings to illustrate the various specialized techniques of the many branches of Mining, and the first to provide a realistic history of mining from antiquity to its day. For almost 200 years, Agricola remained the only authoritative work in this area and by modern times it had become one of the most highly respected scientific classics of all time. A book more often referred to in literature on mining and metallurgy than any other, its Latin text prevented it from being as widely used as it might have been. In 1912, the book was translated by former President Herbert Clark Hoover and his wife. Printed in a limited edition, the work was quickly bought up by book collectors, historians, and medievalists, who had found that there was much to be learned from its pages. Out of print, this edition has sold for up to $150 to collectors and libraries. The book contains an unprecedented wealth of material on alluvial mining, alchemy, silver refining, smelting, surveying, timbering, nitric acid making, and hundreds of other phases of the medieval art of metallurgy. The text even covers the legal aspects of mining-the use of boundary stones, forfeitures of titles, the specific safety requirements of tunnel building in the 1500's, and so on. But the plates, perhaps more than anything else, are what is responsible for Agricola's continued importance. Brilliantly executed drawings, richly detailed, reveal a whole medieval world of machinery, industrial technique, tools, even costume and architecture. All 289 of the original drawings are reproduced in this reprint of the 1912 edition, offering students of the period, commercial artists, Ternary Systems: Introduction to the T1. engineers, metallurgists, and even curious general readers an unforgettable picture of the first age of technology. Unaltered, unabridged reprint of the 1912 edition. Three appendices: Bibliography, Ancient Authors, Weights and Measures. Biographical and Introduction. Author's and translator's prefaces. Four facsimile pages from the Latin original. 289 illustrations. ii, 640pp. 63/4 x 11. Book - in Fine [much better than Very Good] blue grey boards with gilt lettering. BARBER THOMAS WALTER  Engineer's Sketch-Book of Mechanical Movements, Devices, Appliances, Contrivances, and Details
E & F N Spon, U.K. 1890. Second Edition, Hard Cover. Good Plus/No Jacket. Employed In the Design And Construction of Machinery For Every Purpose. Classified And Arranged For Reference For The Use Of Engineers, Mechnical Draughtsmen, Managers, Mechanics, Inventors, Patent Agents, And All Engaged In The Mechanical Arts. With nearly Two Thousand Illustrations, Descriptive Notes and Memoranda. 243 pages, size approximately 9 inches tall by 6 inches. "Every successful engineer is a born inventor; indeed the daily work of an engineer in practice largely consists in scheming and devising from previous experience new and improved processes, methods, and details for accomplishing them, and for simplifying or cheapening old forms of machinery and the work they produce, to enable him to successfully compete with others, who are perhaps as ingenious and enterprising as himself. In the work of designing machinery the draughtsman has to rely mainly on his memory for inspiration; and, for lack of an idea, has frequently to wade through numerous volumes to find a detail or move ment to effect a particular purpose. Hence, as a rule, every man's work runs in a groove, his productions generally having the stamp of his particular experience and training clearly marked upon them. In the course of twenty-five years of such experience, I have found the want of such a volume as the present, and endeavoured to supply the deficiency in my own practice by private notes and sketches, gathered promiscuously, until the difficulty of selection and arrangement became so apparent that I began to classify them, as they exist in the following pages. A few weeks of unusual leisure have enabled me to complete this work and amplify it by numerous additions, and it is now presented in the hope that it will be found of equal service to others engaged in the head-splitting, exhausting work of scheming and devising machinery, than which I can conceive of no head-work more wearing and anxious. Several valuable works have already found numerous users, and there is no lack of admirable collections of memoranda, rules, and data for designing and proportioning the various constructive details of machinery; but, as far as I am aware, there is no work in existence which aims at the same purpose as is attempted in the following pages, viz. to provide side by side suggestive sketches of the various methods in use for accomplishing any particular mechanical movement or work, in a form easily referred to, and devoid of needless detail and elaboration. A sketch, properly executed, is-to a practical man-worth a folio of description; and it is to such that these pages are addressed. For the same reason it has been deemed undesirable to add to the various sketches any rules or tables relating to strengths or dimensions, which may be found in numerous well-known volumes. Any suggestions or additions will be entertained and gratefully I acknowledged. HASTINGS, 1890. THOMAS WALTER BARBER." Book - in Good brown boards with gilt lettering and decoration to the front board and spine - some marking to the boards and some bumping and wearing to the corners and extreme ends of spine. Contents, some marking to the top edges of the pictorial and advertising front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns and to the last inch of the page edges, slight spotting to the introductory pages, otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. BENTLEY ROBERT  Student's Guide to Structural Morphological and Physiological Botany
J & A Churchill, U.K. 1883. Hard Cover. Good Plus/No Jacket. 482 pages with an index and 16 pages of advertisements to rear. Well illustrated with line drawings throughout the text. Size approximately 6 inches tall by 4 inches. "The present volume has been prepared in accordance with a desire expressed for some years past, by many old pupils and others, to have a guide which should not be too elementary, but which might serve as an introduction to the author's ' Manual of Botany,' and other larger and more comprehensive works. The author has, therefore, endeavoured to condense within a moderate compass all that is essential as a foundation for future study, and thus to form a convenient and trust worthy guide on Structural and Physiological Botany for Medical and Pharmaceutical Students, and also for use in colleges and schools where Botany is now largely taught. The author's experience for more than thirty years as a Professor of Botany has shown him the necessity of explaining every detail in simple language, and of arranging the subjects treated of in such a manner as to facilitate their systematic study. He has, therefore, taken his own successful ' Manual of Botany' as his guide in these respects, but has altered it wherever necessary, so as to adapt the present work to a less advanced class of students. A comparison of the present volume, however, with his larger work will show that, although it has been grounded upon it, it cannot be regarded as a simple abstract or epitome of that volume, but that every page exhibits evidence of very careful revision, and much that is new in the treatment of details. Indeed, great pains have been taken to bring the different subjects treated of down to the present state of science ; and much care has also been exercised in condensing the numerous details in each department, and in arranging them for systematic study. The author trusts, therefore, that he has succeeded in the object he had in view, and has satisfied those who expressed a desire for such a volume. The present work will be succeeded, as early as possible, by another small volume, ' The Student's Guide to Systematic Botany,' uniform with it in design and execution. June 1883". BUCKLEY ROBERT BURTON  Irrigation Pocket Book : Or Facts, Figures and Formulae for Irrigation Engineers
E & F N Spon, U.K. 1928. Fourth Edition, Hard Cover. Near Very Good/No Jacket. Being A Series Of Notes On Miscellaneous Subjects Connected With Irrigation Compiled With The Kind Help Of Others. x, 678 pages, size 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches, with an index. With 120 Illustrations and Diagrams. 'This book is simply a compilation of facts, figures and formulae bearing on the everyday work of an Irrigation Engineer. It had its origin in a note-book in which I recorded, during thirty-three years' work in India, various data, facts, statistics, opinions, and formulae which came to my notice. To a large extent the matter in the following pages is extracted, bodily, from Government Reports, and from the Proceedings of Engineering Societies in England, Ireland, and the United States. This third edition has been enlarged by contributions kindly sent by several Irrigation Engineers in India and Egypt purposely for the book. Some of these have been specially written, and they have been inserted with the names of the authors. My thanks are due to them, and particularly to the Inspector-General of Irrigation in India, who has given me much help and encouragement. The notes often proved useful to me in my service on Indian Irrigation Works, and I hope they may be useful to others. An endeavour has been made to quote the sources, as far as possible, from which the information is drawn. First, in order to acknowledge the rights of the original writers, and, secondly, because an Engineer may often find that a reference to the authorities which are quoted, in any particular case, will lead him to the full information he needs, if, as may well be, it is found wanting in this volume '. Book - in Good Plus Plus green boards with blind stamped lettering to the front board and gilt to the spine - some marking/fading to the boards and light bumping to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, clean, bright and tightly bound, previous owner's name to the top corner of the free front endpaper. A RARE Title. R. B. BUCKLEY. July, 1920. Shipped Weight: 750gms-1kgm. CAMPBELL DOUGLAS HOUGHTON  Lectures on the Evolution of Plants
Macmillan, U.K. 1899. Hard Cover. Near Fine [Better Than Very Go/No Jacket. 319 pages with an index. Illustrated with drawings throughout the text. "In the present volume I have endeavored to present in as untechnical a manner as seemed feasible the more striking facts bearing upon the evolution of plant forms. While there are numerous excellent text-books in which most of the statements here given are clearly presented, there is none, at least in English, so far as I am aware, where a connected account of the development of the plant kingdom from an evolutionary stand point has been attempted. Of course every modern system of classification is based upon the assumption of a genetic connection between the different groups, and must take into account the origin of plant forms; but these phylogenetic problems are necessarily subordinated in the general text-books. Moreover, these text books are, for the most part, avowedly prepared for the use of botanical students alone. It seemed to the writer that an accurate, if some what general, and not strictly technical, statement of our present knowledge concerning the data from which the genealogical history of the vegetable kingdom may be traced, might be of interest not only to such botanists as have not concerned themselves specially with this phase of the science, but also to zoologists, and those general readers who are interested in biological problems. The substance of the following chapters was presented in the form of a course of lectures at Stanford University during the past year. These lectures have been carefully revised, and a number of drawings prepared, which it is hoped will be helpful in elucidating the text. Very little originality can be claimed for the matter presented, beyond its arrangement. The writer has availed himself freely of the materials accumulated through the labors of botanists during the past fifty years, which have made possible such a general presentation of the subject as has been here attempted. It was intended, at first, to prepare a bibliography of the more important works bearing on the subject; but it was soon evident that the magnitude of a bibliography, which would be in any way complete, rendered this impracticable. Most of the drawings have been made by the author from nature. Where these have been borrowed, due acknowledgment has been made. Special thanks are due my colleague, Dr. G. J Peirce, for most valuable assistance in the reading of the proofs". DOUGrLAS HOUGHTON CAMPBELL. STANFORD UNIVERSITY, November, 1898. CONTENTS : CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION, CHAPTER II THE CONDITIONS OF PLANT LIFE, CHAPTER III THE SIMPLEST FORMS OF LIFE, CHAPTER IV ALGAE, CHAPTER V FUNGI, CHAPTER VI MOSSES AND LIVERWORTS (BRYOPHYTA), CHAPTER VII THE FERNS (PTERIDOPHYTA), CHAPTER VIII PTERIDOPHYTA, CHAPTER IX SEED PLANTS (SPERMATOPHYTA) GYMNOSPERMAE), CHAPTER X ANGIOSPERMAE (MONOCOTYLEDONS), CHAPTER XI DICOTYLEDONS, CHAPTER XII GEOLOGICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION, CHAPTER XIII ANIMALS AND PLANTS, CHAPTER XIV INFLUENCE OF ENVIRONMENT, CHAPTER XV SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION. COLE GARRY T AND SAMSON ROBERT A  Patterns of Development in Conidial Fungi
Pitman, US, 1979. First Edition, Hard Cover. Fine [Better Than Very Good]/Near Fine /Very Good ++. xi, 190 large (11.0 x 9.0 inch) pages with an index. Illustrated profusely with black and white plates and diagrams. ' This book is a comprehensive analysis of the various modes of asexual reproduction (conidium formation) in this important group of fungi. The taxonomy of conidial fungi is complex and often ambiguous. The application of developmental characters described in this book to the taxonomy of conidial fungi is discussed. It is thus an up-to-date [at the time of publication] treatment of aspects of conidiogenesis and application of developmental characters to the systematics of the Deuteromycetes. Conidial fungi cause the majority of animal and human mycoses (fungal diseases) and include many of the important plant pathogens of cultivated crops. They play significant roles in food spoilage and biodeterioration and produce toxins which are potentially dangerous to 'our health (eg. aflatoxins demonstrated to be carcinogenic). They have also been used in biological control of certain pests (plants and animals) and provide developmental biologists with unusual orphogenetic systems to investigate which may yield new insight into our understanding of eukaryotic cells. The authors suggest an interesting classification of developmental processes of the conidial fungi based on micrographs and text) which can effectively be applied to the systematics of imperfect fungi. Suitable for specialists, postgraduate and undergraduate students of mycology, microbiology and applied biology. Of interest to developmental and structural cytologists and electron microscopists, and biologists working on applications in agriculture and phytopathology.' COOK J GORDON  Your Guide to Plastics
Merrow Publishing, U.K. 1964. First Edition, Hard Cover. Near Fine [Better Than Very Go/Very Good. A Science For Everyman Book. 272 pages which includes an index. Illustrated with black and white plates and diagrams. ' The intrusion of plastics into our everyday lives has been a phenomenon of modern times. In " Your Guide to Plastics," Dr. J. Gordon Cook explains why plastics have achieved such tremendous importance during the last decade or two, and describes the different types of plastics that have taken part in this technical revolution. The ease with which plastics can be moulded into complex shapes is the most important characteristic of these extraordinary materials, and it is this that has enabled them to take pride of place in our mass-production age. Dr. Cook shows how this "shapability" of plastics derives from their unusual thread-like molecules. Our growing understanding of the behaviour of these thread-molecules, and the discovery of new methods of building them from smaller units, have made possible the rapid expansion of the modern plastics industry. In " Your Guide to Plastics," Dr. Cook traces the development of this understanding, from the early plastics such as celluloid and casein, to the silicones, nylons and other plastics of modern times. In common with the other books of the Science for Everyman Series, this book is written for the man-in-the-street who is interested in knowing about the influence of scientific developments on everyday life. At the end of the book, there is a Reference Section in which the student, or the reader employed in a branch of the plastics industry, will find additional technical information about important modern plastics '. Grover et al of the paper entitled "Structure of Very High Thermal Conductance" in 1964, interest in the heat pipe has grown considerably. There is now a very extensive amount of literature on the subject and the heat pipe has become recognised as an important development in heat transfer technology. This book is intended to provide the background required by those wishing to use or to design heat pipes. The development of the heat pipe is discussed and a wide range of applications described. The presentation emphasises the simple physical principles underlying heat pipe operation in order to provide an understanding of the processes involved. Where necessary a summary of the basic physics is included for those who may not be familiar with these particular topics. Full design and manufacturing procedures are given and extensive data provided in Appendix form for the designer. The book should also be of use to those intending to carry out research in the field. The authors wish to thank those who assisted in providing material for this book. They are especially grateful to Pru Leach for typing the major part of the manuscript and for making many valuable suggestions concerning presentation of the data.' ELLIOTT A AND DICKSON J HOME  Laboratory Instruments : Their Design and Application
Chapman & Hall, U.K. 1951. First Edition, Hard Cover. Very Good/Good Plus. 414 pages, size 8.75 inches tall by 5.75 inches. ' This book is based on the accumulated experience during many years of research work and aims to present the principles on which good design is based, and to give as well many examples of practical applications. The authors believe that present-day trends towards specialisation have made it more difficult for students in Universities and Technical Colleges to obtain the wider general training so necessary for successful research work. The research worker is often called on to devise and construct his own instruments and finds his training inadequate to cover the many ramifications involved. It is, therefore, especially to provide some guide to these processes that this book has been written. The early chapters deal with the properties of various materials and their treatment and use in the construction of instruments. There is a chapter on the preparation of drawings for workshop use and their reproduction. Succeeding chapters are devoted to methods of construction to suit special requirements and in particular the Kinematic design of instruments is treated at some length. Chapters on vibration insulation, sensitivity and methods of measurement follow. Optical instruments of many kinds and photography play a large part in research work and the remainder of the book is concerned with such instruments and methods. Chapters on glass and on the uses and working of glass are followed by a description of a number of optical instruments and devices. There are many tables and diagrams illustrating the uses of lenses, mirrors and prisms and much information which is not generally included in books on optics or in the normal college courses. Finally a chapter on the applications of photography and several appendices containing miscellaneous information conclude this valuable and informative book '. Book - in Very Good blue boards with gilt lettering, just a touch bumped and rubbed to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light browning to the pastedowns and free endpaper, light speckling to the page edges, previous owner's name to the front pastedown and free front endpaper, otherwise Very Good, clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Good Plus - small tears and small amounts of loss to the edges and corners, light marking. Although this book was published back in the 1950's, it is still of great use to the scientific world. Shipped Weight: 750gms-1kgm. Category: Science Chemistry Inventory No: 001096.

FYFE W S  Geochemistry of Solids : An Introduction
McGraw - Hill Book Co, US, 1964. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine /Very Good ++. 199 pages with an index. "Students of the earth sciences . frequently have only the most rudimentary ideas of such things as atomic structure and chemical bond ing. But the complex problems which confront the student of natural science make this fun damental background quite essential." From the Author's Preface This modern book covering the fundamental features of solid state chemistry may be used as a supplement in introductory studies of mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, and inorganic chemistry. Many examples are drawn from mineralogy. The structural stability and reactivity of solids is approached from a consideration of the dominant types of atomic interactions. The two major types of bonding forces, electrostatic and exchange, are used to explain solids. An introduction to defects in lattices and reactivity is included which is not available in any elementary text on the earth sciences. The first three chapters are considerations of the solid state, atomic structure, and forces between atoms. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the ionic and covalent models, mixed and other limiting types of bonds, more complex crystal structures, isomorphism and solid solutions, polymorphism, defects and color in crystals, and crystal formation. The book concludes with chapters covering chemical reactions which involve solids, and suggested further readings. While the author is concerned with the modern understanding of fundamental principles, he has not hesitated to stress exceptions in presenting an interesting, living account of solid state chemistry." Book - Fine - minor bumping to ends of spine, previous owner's inscription to front pastedown. Dust Jacket - Near Fine - slight grubbiness. Shipped Weight: 750gms-1kgm.
