| BAKER, MARGARET Here's Health To You! Author, UK, 1928. Third Edition, Card covers, Illustrated by: Author. Good /Good. Size: 7.25 inches tall by 4.75 inches. 200 pages. ‘FOREWORD BY DR. COURTENAY C. WEEKS. Another book on Alcohol ! Yes, but this one is unique, with its threefold appeal of scientific accuracy, literary charm and freshness of presentation. You youngsters are indeed fortunate in having such a guide as Miss Baker, and those of us who try to do a little teaching will envy her gifts and especially her use of the pencil. I have read the whole book through twice, and some of it more: the science side of it is right up to date and based on accurate knowledge; but I think the stories are simply great. The Three Councillors would make a fine recitation, every paragraph of it conveys real sound wisdom, indeed all the stories are so good that one hopes Miss Baker will soon give us some more. You for whom the book is written have entered into a great heritage. The Pioneers of the Temperance Movement started with practically every section of the national life against them ; to-day allgood citizens realize that the prevailing rate of indulgence in strong drink is one of the greatest evils and source of misery in our national life. Miss Baker has written her book not simply to enable you to have better health and a longer and more truly joyous life if you do without alcohol but to enable you to serve your country. If you can say "I will abstain that I may serve my Home, my Country and my God " then you will have given Miss Baker her best reward.’ Book - [SEE SCAN] - in Very Good blue/green card covers - light marking to the card covers and light bumping to the extreme top of the front cover. | CHARLES VERNON Goodbye to Bacchus : An Alcoholic Actor's Escape from Hell Arthur James, U.K. 1953. First Edition, Hard Cover. Near Very Good/Good Plus Plus. vii, 186 pages, size 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches. ' On seeing this book, one immediately thinks of that friend of whom it is whispered "I'm afraid he-or she-is drinking too much." Such whispering is encouraged with a conspiracy of silence by which the family seek to hide their problem, often until it is too late for the victim to avoid disaster. This book is a narration of both success and failure in dealing with alcoholism as a disease, by an actor, who, with the aid of Alcoholics Anonymous, accepted the challenge of alcohol and won. Victory is a triumphant note in this vivid story of men and women who have laughed and cried with Bacchus. It will light the road to freedom and gladden the hearts of those who feel frustrated and baffled by any degree of addiction. Whatever their problem, give this book to the unhappy and the sorrowing: it will give them comfort and hope. Read it yourself and discover the sun-lit horizon awaiting those who dare to venture with Faith '. | KOHLER MARIANNE & CHAPELLE J Sleep Well : 101 Recipes For Sound, Restful, Relaxation Souvenir Press, U.K. 1967. First UK Edition, Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. 191 pages, size 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches. 'It is not the amount of sleep we get that matters but the quality. Those who awaken refreshed and alert to face the day with confidence and vigour are fortunate beyond words. Still it is not necessary for the insomniac to regard this with bitter envy. There are many ways to induce sleep. There are many ways to promote a more relaxed attitude at the end of the day. This book is an intensely practical analysis of the most effective methods so far used. The authors open with a general discussion of the nature of sleep and then go on to discuss the remedies for insomnia. They have a brief look at the problems caused by dreams, examine the body's physical responses during sleep and end with a section on hypnosis. They offer sound advice on seemingly trivial points-the room you sleep in, the bed, your diet-and the most complex-tension, depression, physical disabilities, early-waking. They point out that nobody is ever completely asleep : if cold air is blown over a sleeping person he will respond by pulling the bedclothes over himself. Insomnia has nothing to do with failing mental powers. The lower down in the intelligence- scale one goes the more easily sleep comes to the animals concerned. These two facts alone, and their important implications, will give sufferers from insomnia some relief from their enervating fears. Altogether this is an easy-to-read and lightly humorous book full of practical suggestions for achieving sound sleep. It will be absolutely invaluable to everybody unfortunate enough to find that sound restful sleep continually eludes them. Somewhere in the 101 recipes they will find just the right natural answer for their particular problem.' Book - in Fine [better than Very Good] bright grey boards with gilt lettering. | TREBECK MARY Try This : Useful Household Hints and War Economies G F S Employment Office and Mrs Trebeck, UK, 1915. Second Edition, Paper Covers. Good/No Jacket. iii, 125 pages, size 5.5 inches tall by 4 inches, and paper covers with an index and black and white line drawings. ' This little book does not pretend to be a complete " household guide", but only to give hints" that the writer has found useful. Instead of suggesting the obvious remedy, she has try to give an original one, if it happened to be equally good. For want of ordinary general knowledge and a little " mother wit" many people waste money on buying patent powders, polishes, and pastes, and " Try This" is intended to save these expenses, and help them to be economical; also to arm them against all sorts of everyday accidents and emergencies and to hand down some old-fashioned recipes. To these are now added several war economies, as at a time like this many of us have to be own joiners and fitters, etc. and it is helpful to know how to do ordinarily household jobs, such as re-charging electric bells, etc. and removing obstacles in our drains.
