CHEN CHIN-HSIN YAO AND SHIH-HSIANG  Flower Drum and Other Chinese Songs
John Day, US, 1943. First Edition, Hard Cover. Good Plus/No Jacket. Foreword by Pearl S Buck. Preface by Henry Cowell. 64 large pages, size 11.25 inches tall by 8.75 inches. Foreword : 'The Chinese have not been a singing people. I have often wondered why this was so, for they are a gay people and singularly light-hearted even in hardship. It may be that music, and particularly song, does not come out of gaiety so much as out of sorrow and suppression. People sing when they cannot weep and must not speak, and the Chinese have always wept readily and spoken freely. What music there is in China has come mainly out of the plain people in folk songs. These have been difficult to collect because there are no real collections of them even in China. They have been even more difficult to write down when collected, for the individual singer in China has always taken the bare theme, in both words and music, and added to them his own meaning and embellishments. Thus a single folk song may appear in a score of different versions within a small region. To discover the original, so far as there is an original, to catch the essential rhythms under the changes, is not easy. Even more difficult, perhaps, is to convey to western ears the effect of the accompaniments upon instruments foreign to those ears. Harmonization in the western sense destroys the songs. This collection of folk songs, then, has two outstanding merits; the songs themselves are faithful to well known and original theme songs, and the accompaniments are not harmonized in the western sense. Mrs. Chen has by some extraordinary means of her own put piano notes together in such ways, in such rhythms, that the effect is amazingly that of the flutes, drums, lutes, violins and other instruments with which Chinese country folk accompany their singing. I ought to mention a third merit-the folk songs have been translated into real poetry by Shih-hsiang Chen, a young Chinese poet and writer, who is also Mrs. Chen's husband. It is not often that all talents work together so harmoniously as they do in this book. PEARL S.BUCK '. Book - in Good marked red boards with white lettering - some bumping and wearing to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, some marking to the edges of the pastedowns, previous owner's inscription ' 1st July 1944 To Jill Sharpe With best Wishes Ten-Fu Luis Rear Admiral C.N.' to the free front endpaper, otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. KAMINSKY MAZ  My Life in Jazz
Andre Deutsch, U.K. 1964. First Edition, Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 242 pages including Index. A man who will sing, 'I can't give you anything but love, baby', to a group of Melanesian headhunters, on their territory, will try anything and Max Kaminsky is such a man. At twelve years old he formed his first band, the Six Novelty Synco by the time he was fourteen he was known around Boston as a 'hot trumpet player'; and at seventeen he heard and saw Bix Blederbecke play. Bix became his hero and his friend and two years later Max Kaminsky said goodbye to Boston (to which however lie was often to return) and headed for Chicago from where the 'sound' now came. The year was 1928. Chicago throbbed. The town was tight with gangsters and, it would seem, out of work musicians who were to become household names but who then shifted from one dinner-jacketed dance band to another and in the breaks grouped together in third class hotel rooms and created jazz. It was a time of tremendous excitement. In Chicago, in Harlem - throughout the country - jazz was breaking through. The serious critics had not yet given it their attention but they could not withhold it much longer and the musicians knew it and were right. In My Life in jazz which follows the author's career as a jazz trumpeter from these beginnings through periods of affluence and unemployment, happiness and heartbreak, we have a fascinating and vivid social history of the American jazz scene from the one night stand to the world tour which will absorb the layman and delight the initiate and add immeasurably, from the warmth and intimacy of its portraits, to what is already known of such great names in jazz as Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Tommy Dorsey, Dave Tough, Pee Wee Russell and a score of others. Book Very Good - some abrasion to verso of title page, slight browning to endpapers & page edges. Dust Jacket Very Good ++ - SEE SCAN - lovely colourful wrapper with just a little wear & loss to extreme bottom front corner & foot of spine but otherwise bright & clean with remarkable no loss of pink & orange colour to spine.
