| GOVERNMENT OF INDIA PRESS (PRINTED BY) Navigation By the Stars Government of India Press, India, 1941. Paper Covers. Good Plus/No Jacket. Military Training Pamphlet No 13 (India). MGS-M. 251 (N). 21 pages, size 7 inches tall by 5 inches, in paper covers. With two fold out charts of the Northern and Southern Skies to the rear. ' In modern warfare where movement, by flight tends to increase, a general knowledge of the stare is becoming more and more important to soldiers. This pamphlet has therefore been written to give everyone a general knowledge of the sky and the apparent movement of the principal stars and constellations. It ie not necessary to be an astronomer to acquire such knowledge. Any man with a little practice can find his way about the night sky, and the feeling of helplessness generally induced by a pitch black night and unfamiliar country will be largely abolished; the hours of darkness turned into allies instead of enemies. The easiest way to acquire a knowledge of the stars is by means of a chart. The two charts in this pamphlet show all the principal stars and constellations in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The best method of learning is to go out at night with the charts and an electric torch and identify a few constellations each night. The charts may appear very crowded with stars; in the actual sky, however, there are great spaces between them and identification is extremely simple. It is not essential to learn the names of all the stars and constellations shown on the charts. A few of the more prominent ones in each quarter of the sky should, however, be memorized and their movements carefully observed. Knowledge of the intervening ones will come with practice. The difference between stars and planets is that the former twinkle with their own light and the latter glow with a steady reflected light. The pamphlet has been divided into three parts: - Part I. Deals with a few points of practical navigation by the aid of the stars. Part II. Enunciates the general principles of star movements in the sky and gives a brief description of the chief directional stars and constellations. These are the stars which should be known by everyone; they are very prominent and easily recognised and form a most valuable aid to night movement. Part III. Is a more detailed description of the stars. It is an amplification of the charts and should be read in conjunction with them. This part should be studied by navigators and those who wish to increase their knowledge beyond the few directional stars and constellations given in Part II. Book - Good Plus - some marking to the covers, rusting to the staples. Shipped Weight: 750gms-1kgm. Category: Military Asian History Inventory No: 99910844. | ISHIMARU TOTA LIEUTENANT-COMMANDER [TRANSLATED FROM THE JAPANESE BY B MATSUKAWA] Next World War Hurst and Blackett, U.K.. Second Impression, Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Undated. 352 pages with an index. Illustrated with black and white plates. Foreword By The Author "If you should think that all danger is over now that the critical period of 1935-6 has almost passed away,* that would be a great mistake on your part, for nothing could be further from the truth. To persist in such unwarranted optimism would amount to the ruination of one's country. Intact, the peaks of the crisis have not yet been surmounted ; indeed, some of them have not yet been surveyed. If there is a lull at the present moment, it is merely the calm before another storm. If an eerie silence prevails, that is merely the condition of the world today. As to whether it is going to break into an unprecedented storm or not, 1939-40 will prove to be the dividing line between calm and storm. Then, will another great world war break out, or not ? In such an eventuality, where will be the centres ? There are great number of people already prophesying that a second great European war is bound to occur, some going so far as to say that this war will extend to the Pacific Ocean, developing into a second world war. There are very few, however, who point out specifically how it will happen, and in what sequence. In the past, many prophecies regarding war in Europe came to nothing after all, and probably it will be the same in the future. But I put it to you that in the Pacific Ocean area a storm is brewing no less dangerous than that in Europe. I put it to you that the first spark of the second world war will be kindled there. It is unfortunate that so many prophets have hitherto overlooked this point. I want to express my opinion frankly. We Japanese are so eager to swallow imported prophecies regarding the future war in Europe that we are apt to neglect potential dangers in the Pacific. In this book, therefore, I desire to call attention to dangers nearer home by explaining why war, which seems always imminent in Europe, does not break out suddenly, and why | the war clouds over the Pacific are just as threatening as those in Europe. Another point not to be overlooked is that if the first shot is fired either in Europe or in the Pacific area, sooner or later the one will be repeated in the other, and thus will begin the second world war. Whatever happens in Europe affects the whole world, and consequently cannot be overlooked. That is why I feel the urge to describe in this book the complex dangers in Europe and in the Pacific area, and have endeavoured to explain in detail where the causes of war lie. I therefore should like to warn the people of this country not to view the possibility of war as a fire afar, but realize that it is bound to affect us sooner or later. Now the period 1939-40, the dividing line between peace and catastrophe, is approaching. We Japanese must get at the true facts, and not be misled by false prophets. In this sense this book is a challenge to those popular works regarding the next war ; it endeavours to lay before its readers the true world situation at the present time. In Chapter I of Part One, I have quoted a few prophecies made by authoritative writers, and I have been assisted in my investigations by Mr. Ryo Hasegawa, of the Japan Foreign Affairs Association, to whom I wish here to express my gratitude. As I write this, a news cable arrests my attention regarding the new naval additions by the Governments of Great Britain and the United States of America." Tota Ishimaru. | FOX MAJOR C L Narrative of the 502 (Wessex) Field Company Royal Engineers 1915-1919 Hugh Rees, U.K. 1920. First Edition, Hard Cover. Good Plus/No Jacket. viii, 192 pages, size 8.5 inches tall by 5.5 inches. Illustrated with 2 black and white plates and 2 fold out maps to the rear. AUTHOR'S PREFACE : This book was originally intended to be merely a short chronicle of the doings of the 502 (Wessex) Field Coy. R.E. but it has expanded considerably in the writing, owing to the hope that it might help, not Only to remind the members of the Company of their service during the " Great War," but also to give to their families and friends, in however crude a fashion, a picture of the circumstances and conditions of that service which might be more complete than that obtained from occasional letters and conversations. The writer has endeavoured, in addition to revealing some of the unselfishness, good-comradeship, courage and devotion that were so conspicuous, to touch also on the loveable human frailties, the little personal motives, and the innumerable adroitnesses and subterfuges of the " old soldier," that were such a never-ending source of humour to us all. The book was composed almost entirely in France, during the three months following the signing of the Armistice, and therefore suffers, firstly from too near-sighted a view of our life, secondly from being based too largely on the O.C.'s memory, and thirdly-and most seriously-from being written, of necessity, from the O.C.'s point of view. Furthermore, matters are reported as they appeared to one in France, and are consequently tinted by the unique atmosphere and philosophy of the British Expeditionary Force. Many episodes have inevitably been recorded on slight evidence, and many minor errors and omissions will be apparent; such faults must be charged to the impossibility of collating the experiences of two hundred men over a period of three and a half years, and to the difficulty of selecting those of relatively greater importance. For the same reasons, doubtless, many insignificant occurrences have been related at too great a length, or have been dealt with in the wrong vein. It is hoped that readers will bear with such cases in the thought that what is trivial to one man is sometimes vital to another; what is exasperating to one is often humorous to another; and what brings tragedy to one fellow may mean luck for his mate '. Book - in Good original purple boards with gilt lettering - most of the purple colouring has all but faded away and there is some marking but the lettering remains bright and distinct, small amount of wear to the extreme top of the spine. Contents, minor abrasion to the edge of the free front and rear endpaper, the front one also has the author's dedication 'With the Authors Commiseration', to it, light browning to the pages otherwise clean and tightly bound. Shipped Weight: 750gms-1kgm. Category: Military Inventory No: 002230. | NEWMAN BERNARD Epics of Espionage Werner Laurie, U.K. 1953. Fourth Impression, Hard Cover. Near Very Good/Poor Plus. 270 pages with an index. "Mr. Newman has selected historical cases of espionage for examination from a new angle. From Moses to Dr. Fuchs, the outstanding espionage cases of history are presented in dramatic form, fore shadowing the intense spy activity of two world wars. Avoiding the sentimental approach which disfigures most spy books, he examines the subject critically as an expert with great first hand experience. The most important part of the book deals with modem espionage. Who will not thrill to the amazing story of the spies who saved London by directing the R.A.F. to the great V.I and V.2 base at Peenemunde? Or the American spy who could have lost the war for the Allies; In his final chapters, the author considers, from inside knowledge, the Canadian spy case, and those of Dr. Allan Nunn May, Alger Hiss and Dr. Fuchs. He shows how the character of espionage has completely changed, and is now closely linked with treason. The methods he suggests to counter the new technique will attract wide attention. As The Evening News has said: "When it comes to spies, master-spies, and the endless excitement of intrigue, Bernard Newman is quite supreme." Book - Near Very Good - in red boards with gilt lettering - some fading to front board and top of spine, small mark to top edge of back board.
