DAY & SONS  Everyday Farriery or the Management of Stock from Disease to Health
Day & Sons, U.K.. Seventeeth Edition, Hard Cover. Good Plus/No Jacket. 207 pages with 5 pages of adverts to rear. A Book For All Stockowners, Wherein The Symptoms And Treatment Of General Diseases And Ailments Are Plainly Given And In Such A Manner That The Inquirer May Learn In A Moment What To Do. PREFACE DATED 1885 : "Disease ever has been, and though sanitary and other precautions may lessen the attacks in severity and frequency, still we presume disease in some shape will never be wholly eradicated. Everyone is convinced of the truth that "a stitch in time saves nine," and, in like manner, "a dose in time saves nine," and ofttimes an animal's life; thus there is a double economy in this method of early application. With a view to help stock-keepers in this safe and sure method, we now publish this treatise, which is in simple, plain language, a statement of causes and symptoms, and a guide to the treatment of the general ailments which may be expected to occur amongst stock. The little book is intended to be a guide wherein in a moment an owner or tender of stock may learn how to treat his animals ; for voluminous works confound more than instruct those who wish to hastily and easily learn What to do." We feel certain that "Everyday Farriery" will prove a valuable compendium to the use of our world famed Animal Medicines." DAY & SONS. Book - SEE SCAN - in Near Very Good red boards with gilt lettering and black pictorial front board - some marking to boards, slight browning and marking to endpapers, contents are generally clean, bright and tightly bound. FOULKES, STEEL, WALLACE  Dairy Farming on Arable Land : Five Prize Essays
R Silcock & Sons, U.K.. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Undated (1930's ?) 144 pages. A competition was run by the publisher's R Silcock & Sons to see if the dairy farming methods on arable land could take some updating perhaps using some of the competitors ideas. "Arable farming in this country has been running more or less in the same groove since the introduction of the root crop. It was with the idea of finding out whether there is any alternative system that we decided to initiate a competition. We have been extremely gratified at the response this contest has evoked. In the main the objects for which the competition was organised have been fully met. In at least some of the Essays a radical alteration in the existing system has been advocated. It is not for us, of course, to add anything to the adjudicators' remarks, but we would like to say that, in our opinion, the Essays printed are well worth the careful study of the whole of the farming community. There is, and will be, a good deal of controversy about the various systems. There are many points in each one of these Essays which can be incorporated in a man's present system of farming with the greatest advantage. We take the opportunity of first publicly acknowledging the very excellent work performed by the three adjudicators :- Professor Foulkes, Harper Adams Agric, College, Newport, Salop Alex Steel, Esq. 162 Victoria Avenue, Southend-on-Sea Walter Wallace Esq. Knebworth, Herts. R. Silcock & Sons". WALTON CHARLES LIVESEY  Farmers' Warfare
Crosby Lockwood, U.K. 1947. First Edition, Hard Cover. Near Fine /Very Good ++/Near Very Good. 174 pages with an index. Illustrated with black and white photographs. A look at how difficult it was for farmer's back in the 1940's to control pests."The difficulties with which farmers are faced are innumerable, and the questions set their scientific investigators and advisers are almost as many! During a long period of devotion to zoological aspects of farming, Dr C. L. Walton had many problems to consider-including in particular the life history of the liver fluke of sheep and the best means by which the sheep could be protected, or cured if infested. This book gives an excellent and very readable account of some phases of Dr Walton's stewardship, the difficulties he encountered, the country life he experienced, and the various kinds of people he met. It is very desirable that the farming community should realise the kind of problem to be solved by the scientific worker, and what a lot of hard work may be involved before success is attained. It will be a thoroughly good thing, too, if that great body "the general public", will also endeavour to under stand more clearly that the food on which they depend for physical well-being is only won by producers-whether at home or overseas- after overcoming very considerable difficulties, many of them associated with the biology of what are commonly described as insect and fungus pests and diseases. This book should serve to help both sides to a realisation of the importance of the warfare or fight that farmers need to wage, with the aid of scientific workers. Incidentally, to quote the Foreword, "To many of us the necessary warfare is well understood : it ought to be at least known to everyone else". Book -,Near Fine - slight marking to back board and slight yellowing to front and rear free endpaper.
