"Many people enjoy making and using codes and ciphers, as well as breaking them. This book is not meant for experts, but for enjoyment. Youngsters can have plenty of fun sending and receiving secret messages which no one under stands except themselves. The codes described in tlie first chapter are so simple that the reader can use them with little or no practice. One of them, for example, substitutes a number for each letter of the alphabet : figure 1 for A, 2 for B and so on. With this as a beginning, Dr. Zim explains step by step how more difficult and more secret codes can be made and gives examples of each type on which to practise both encoding and decoding.
