| BOHS JOSEPHINE M [WRITTEN AND COMPILED BY] Short History Of Bindon Abbey Dorset : A Cistercuan Abbey Founded - A.D. 1172 Longmans, U.K. 1952. Second Reprint, Card Covers, Illustrated by: Bohs John F. Very Good/No Jacket. Unpaginated, 14 pages, size 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches, in card covers. The covers make up the plan of the abbey. Illustrated with line drawings. ' Bindon Abbey is an interesting example of an early Cistercian Abbey as its plan can be clearly seen, none of its foundations having been removed or built over. Its architecture shows some Norman work but more Early English. The Church had rather wide pointed arches (for the period) and the few carved details left show the very pure and vigorous style of the early 13th century. The Cloister Garth was the centre of the Abbey buildings. The high walls of the Church on its northern side gave shelter from the cold winds and reflected the sun's warmth. On the eastern side adjoining the Church were the Sacristy, the Chapter House, where the business affairs of the monastery were discussed, and the living and working rooms of the monks with their dormitory on a floor above. All these rooms were stone vaulted. On the south side was the rear entrance and next this was the warming room (the only room in which a fire was allowed during the winter). A large dining hall, the refectory, came next, then the kitchen, store rooms and the quarters of the lay Brothers who helped with the manual work of the monastery. Adjoining this on the western side was the principle entrance, the doorway opening into a small hall connected with the buttery where bread and beer were given to needy travellers. Next this was the guest room which must have been a well-built, finely vaulted apartment, with the Abbot's quarters above. Here travellers rested at night and from it a passage led into the Church. All these buildings surrounded the Cloisters which formed a continuous covered walk probably 10 or 12 ft. wide, open to the garth or lawn in the centre. In fine weather the monks performed many of their daily tasks in the Cloisters .' Book - in Very Good card covers - previous owner's name to the top of the front cover. | CALLOWAY STEPHEN [EDITED BY] House Of Liberty : Masters Of Style & Decoration Thames and Hudson, U.K. 1992. First Edition, Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. PLEASE EMAIL FOR SHIPPING RATES OUTSIDE THE UK. 224 pages, size 12 inches tall by 10 inches with an index. With 280 illustrations, 100 in colour. 'From its founding in 1875, the firm of Liberty has been a byword for high-quality, stylish design. A great shop and trading company is inevitably affected by changes in fashion; what gives this one its peculiar distinction is that it has not just followed these changes but has helped to create them, for over a hundred years. Arthur Lasenby Liberty, its founder, set out to transform the appearance of dress and interior decoration; that sense of excitement has remained integral to the house to this day, and continues to appeal to a wide international clientele, making Liberty one of the few names in retailing to be known worldwide. This full account and celebration of Liberty's remarkable achievements in the many branches of the applied arts is therefore also a central work on the history of taste over the past century. Divided into chronological sections and profusely illustrated, it begins with Arthur Liberty's early emporium, selling imported furnishings and Oriental textiles, and ends with a survey of the institution's influence on post-war style and design. Each section is written by an expert on the relevant period. The Arts and Crafts Movement found Liberty's fully established and ideally placed to benefit from the enlightened commissioning which associated the shop with leading craftsmen-designers. After the First World War textiles became the major focus of Liberty trading, continuing the famous lines of prints in both furnishing and costume fabrics. In the post-war era, numerous revivals, notably those of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, were given considerable impetus by Liberty's. Now, in keeping with its role as innovator, the firm continues to commission the world's most exciting textile designers and to promote furniture and artefacts in both avant-garde and traditional styles. Edited by Stephen Calloway, the eminent historian of design and decoration, this is a unique history of a unique enterprise which reflects in microcosm major developments in taste from the late nineteenth century to the present.' | CAMPIN FRANCIS Constructional Iron and Steel Work : As Applied To Public, Private, And Domestic Buildings Crosby Lockwood, U.K. 1896. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. From Weale's Scientific Technical Series. vi, 278 pages, size approximately 7 inches tall by 4.5 inches, with an index and a further 48 page catalogue to the rear. Illustrated with diagrams. ' The object of the present work is mainly to place before the Architectural Student, in a concise and practical form, correct methods of designing the Constructional Iron and Steel Work now so generally used in all classes of buildings; and it is believed that the volume will be found acceptable, not only by Students, but by many Architects in actual practice, and by persons engaged in Building. For any one who is concerned in this branch of Engineering, it is impossible to overlook the fact that it has not hitlierto received the attention from Architects which it deserves ; its importance is paramount, for if the constructional part of a fabric fails all must become a ruin; and it is therefore incumbent upon those preparing to practise as Architects, to make themselves acquainted with the theoretical laws of stress and strength, and with the practical conditions upon which depends the safety of the buildings they are commissioned to design. I have endeavoured throughout to explain everything in the easiest; manner, and where mathematical investigation is indispensable to present it in the simplest form consistent with reaching the issues in view. The examples taken for illustration are such as occur in actual practice, and they are worked out in the same way as they would be in the Architect's or Constructional Engineer's office. In order to follow properly those passages which deal with English and foreign rolled girders and joists, it will be necessary for the reader to furnish himself with tables of weights and strengths such as are issued by the different manufacturers and their agents, for without these, or sheets of sections, the sizes required for any particular purpose cannot be selected. These tables are to be found in most Architects' offices, as the manufacturers are naturally anxious to give all information that may lead to business, so that in this respect the articled pupil is not likely to find .' any difficulty. | CROOK J MORDAUNT Rise of the Nouveaux Riches : Style and Status in Victorian and Edwardian Architecture John Murray, U.K. 1999. First Edition, Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. xiv, 354 pages, size 9.25 inches tall by 6.5 inches with an index. Profusely illustrated with black and white photographs. 'There have been many books about Victorian and Edwardian houses, but this is the first to concentrate on the taste of the nouveaux riches. Not just the rich but the very rich: millionaires and multi-millionaires who grew wealthy in the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution. Lancashire cotton mills and Liverpool shipping; Welsh and Scottish iron and steel; North American real estate; South African diamonds and gold; Irish beer; Glasgow chemicals; Anglo-German banking; and stock market speculation in London and New York - that was how they made their money. But what did they do with it? Where and how did they live? This book describes the houses of the richest nouveaux riches - the Rothschilds, the Guinnesses, the Beits and the Brasseys, the Barings, the Wernhers, the Tenants, the Sassoons - and explains the economic and social context which sustained their extraordinary lifestyles. The impact of their wealth on the fabric of fashionable society was striking. In effect, this book tells the story of the re-making of the British ruling class. Mansions in Mayfair, shooting boxes in the Highlands, houses in the home counties and the shires: with numerous photographs and quotations from novels, diaries and memoirs, this eye-opening study recreates a vanished epoch - the gilded world of the nouveaux riches.' | DAWE CEDRIC How to Draw Interiors Studio Publications, U.K. 1955. First Edition, Hard Cover. Near Very Good/Good Plus. 63 pages, size 6.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches.' Cedric Dawe, who has written and illustrated this book, is a leading film designer. Many fine, exciting 'shots' of interiors often depend on his sketches of dramatic perspective angles and lighting effects. Examples of them will be found in these pages and the technique is an excellent one for the amateur to adopt. In the words of the author 'to know how to draw interiors is to know how to draw generally, for the basic rules of perspective apply to whatever you draw'. And these basic rules of perspective he explains in clear preliminary words and diagrams. For the beginner there must be immediate pleasure at the results of applying them to even simple sketches. For the more experienced there are many suggestions which will help him, for example, to liven his effects. The simple, bold approach will make the book useful, too, to stage designers, architects and architectural draughtsman .' Book - in Fine [much better than Very Good] red boards with black lettering. The former will see the house part of the ground on which it stands, built of materials gathered from the surrounding country. So does the garden grow from the landscape. The latter will see the house as a white bird, descending from the sky and perched upon the green fields. Having approved of its site it will send out "feelers" on either side, to hold it to the ground : these are the gardens. Throughout this book the examples chosen are mainly those of the Established Aspect. Undated but with a previous owner's inscription dated 1925 to top edge of front pastedown. Large (A4) size (11.5 inches tall by 8 inches) 220 pages, including index + 14 Coloured Plates, showing 89 harmonious Colour Schemes for wall decoration, etc. + many text Illustrations + 7 pages of advertisements front & 15 to rear. A Practical Handbook for House Owners and Tenants, Architects, Decorators and Others, With a Chapter on "Period Furniture and Appropriate Mural Decoration," by Herbert E Binstead. Preface; The object of this book is three-fold. The first is to provide examples of many different colour combinations suitable for the decoration of rooms of all kinds. The second is to give practical information on all branches of house painting and decoration particularly in reference o the renovation of old houses, large and small, in order that the architect, owner, or tenant may give exact details of his requirements to his decorator or builder. The third object is to explain modern methods of decoration in reference to the materials used and the effects obtained, as, for example, broken colour effects produced by scumbling and glazing and panelled work in wall paper decoration. Obviously, such a subject appeals to a large class. The house owner and tenant will be directly interested, while Architects and Decorators will find the book of considerable service in the interests of their clients. The beautifying of a house may be done by the judicious use of colour ; for a home without colour is unthinkable. But the selection of the most appropriate colours and the best materials for the particular purpose is by no means easy. The coloured plates and the information contained herein will, it is hoped, prove of considerable assistance to that end. The plates are nearly all prepared with the actual material - washable water paint, flat oil paint and flat enamel - by being applied to paper which has then been cut up and stuck down to form the different plates. This is done for two special reasons, the principal one being the fact that it is impossible to obtain in printers' or lithographers' coloured ink the solidity which is necessary in printed work. The additional reason is that by using flat paint instead of ink on the samples the surface presented is exactly the same as that which would be the result of applying the different materials to a wall. The freedom from brush marks and the delicacy of surface can thus be better appreciated, while the washable qualities of the paints can be tested in a small way. It would be too much to expect that every one of the selections given will be approved by all readers, but there are a sufficient number to suit most tastes. While examining them, two facts should be borne in mind. First, the most pronounced colour schemes are intended to be used in halls, passages, or very large rooms in conjunction with white or neutral coloured paint or enamel. Second, it should be remembered that any combination which at first sight appears to be too bright can easily be toned down to a considerable extent by using plain neutral colours for the curtains and upholstery or on the painted woodwork or on both. In the text the rules which govern the selection of colour harmonies are given in what may be termed a semi-scientific basis. In other words, the theory is not quite left alone, but is dealt with principally in its application. Book - Very Good - in green boards with gilt & white lettering, blind decoration to the corners. Given the emphasis on colour it is odd that the book is bound in poor quality 'moss' green cloth prone to marking, here light but extensive & with light bumping to corners and slight fading to the lettering. Book To Accompany The Exhibition Held at Kunsthalle Basel from 24 September - 12 November 1995, white lettered scarlet boards. In English and German text. 70 large pages, size 11.25 inches tall by 8.75 inches. Illustrated with black and white and coloured photographs and diagrams. John McCracken, born 1937 in Berkley / California, USA, lives and works in New Mexico, USA. "I was always primarily interested in form alone, but then to make a form, you have to make it out of something. So color seemed a natural material to use, because color is abstract. If you make a form that appears to be composed of color, then you have something, an object, that's pretty abstract. Just form alone would be more abstract, of course, because it's just a mental idea, but you don't have anything there for your perceptions to grapple with unless you make it out of a material. However, if you make it out of metal, or stone, or wood, or whatever, then you have something that to my mind may overemphasize the physical aspect and therefore be difficult to perceive as purely mental. An important thought behind this is that all things are essentially mental - that matter, while quite real on the one hand, is on the other hand composed of energy, and in turn, of pure thought." from p. 22. | MAGNANI FRANCO [EDITED BY] Modern Living Studio Vista, U.K. 1973. First UK Edition, Hard Cover. Very Good/Good Plus Plus. PLEASE EMAIL FOR SHIPPING RATES. 155 pages, size 10.25 inches tall by 9.5 inches. Profusely illustrated with bright and colourful photographs. ' Urban living space continues to contract; but because the average home unit is smaller, using what room there is to its best possible advantage becomes a priority. Modern Living, drawing its material from homes of all shapes and sizes, provides visual inspiration for anyone who wants to make the most of his home. The last few years have seen a considerable refinement in line and compactness in almost every sphere of interior design. Fold-away and stacking furniture, smaller television sets, streamlined storage units, and space-saving bathroom suites are helping to conserve space; and easy-care wall coverings, soft furnishings, and bedding' are helping to combat the ever-increasing demands on our time. Moving room by room through the house or flat, these are the things that Modern Living looks at, illustrating ways of combining the old with the new, making the most of a good room feature, using colour and shape to create a comfortable stylish atmosphere. Particularly useful are the sections dealing with the placing of stoves, hi-fis, and bookshelves - features too long ignored by books on planning the layout of the house. Modern Living is a sparkling sourcebook for the decorator/planner, professional or amateur. Looking in turn at every part of the home from the entrance hall and staircase to the attic and the study, it pinpoints the features and problems of the seventies home - and provides a host of ideas and solutions '. | MILLS EDWARD D [EDITED BY] Planning : Volume 1 Architects' Technical Reference Iliffe Books, U.K. 1972. Ninth Edition, Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good. 136 large pages, size 12 inches tall by 8.25 inches, with an index. ' It is nearly 40 years since the first edition was published and during this time Planning has established itself throughout the world as one of the standard reference works for architects. There can be few architects' offices which do not possess and constantly use at least one copy and students have always found it to be an essential source of information. With the radical changes that are taking place in the field of building, the new techniques and disciplines being developed must be reflected in the technical information available. A new approach has therefore been made in Planning and the book will now appear in five volumes. The first of these - Architects' Technical Reference - includes basic planning data which concern all types of building such as car-parking, circulation, and sanitary and storage requirements as well as sections dealing with legislation, British Standards and materials. All information contained in earlier editions which is still valid has been retained and a considerable amount of new material has been added. The other volumes will deal with specific building types and cover a wide range of subjects under the general groupings laid down in the CI/SfB Building Manual. These have been grouped under Buildings for Administration, Commerce and Industry; Buildings for Health, Welfare and Religion; Buildings for Habitation, Entertainment and Recreation; and Buildings for Education, Culture and Science. The unique characteristic of Planning is that it indicates how various types of building are planned by supplying information and data which are essential before planning can begin. It does not deal with the aesthetics of design, although the later volumes, which deal with particular building types, will be illustrated not only by means of diagrams but also by plans and photographs of completed buildings, either in part or whole, showing the ways in which particular problems have been solved '. Book - in Fine [much better than Very Good] grey marbled effect boards with gilt lettering - a touch bumped to the extreme bottom of the spine. Contents, previous owner's name to the top edge of the front pastedown, otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Very Good - fading to the pink background colouring to the top two inches of the front cover, light browning to the white background of the back of the jacket, wrinkling to the plastic laminate to the jacket but this appears to have happened at publication time.
