| DALZIEL HUGH Monographs on British Dogs. Greyhound ; Its History, Points, Breeding, Rearing, Training, and Running L Upcott Gill, U.K. 1887. First Edition, Hard Cover. Good Plus/No Jacket. 2 pages of advertisements of the day to the beginning of the book followed by 88 pages, size 8.5 inches tall by 5.5 inches, and a further 2 pages of advertisements and index to the rear. Illustrated coloured frontispiece. -there are no other illustrations- ' This Monograph on the Greyhound is one of a series, the object of which is to meet the requirements of the very large and increasing class of fanciers who take special interest in one or other variety of the dog. Each Monograph is an enlargement from " BRITISH DOGS," giving such additional matter as the modern fancier requires, but which is outside the scheme of the comprehensive work, written for the lover of the dog in general, who does not seek for the completeness of detail which the specialist demands. The cultivation of the dog in general, and especially in the direction of a clearer separation of distinct varieties, has been greatly stimulated by our competitive exhibitions, and the consequent increased demand, at home and abroad, for pure bred specimens. This is strongly exemplified in the large and increasing number of special clubs, each devoted to the interests of one particular breed, and which authoritatively defines the standard of excellence by which it shall be judged. These circumstances seemed to demand the present series of Monographs, which are designed to serve the particular interest of each fancier. It will be found that the club standard-where such exists-has been given due weight and prominence to; and as I have, in many instances, received the cordial and much valued assistance of gentlemen accepted as high authorities on their special breeds, I hope the result of these co-operative efforts will prove acceptable and useful to those for whom they have been made '. contents : Introduction; The Modern Greyhound; Coursing; Breeding; Rearing; Training; Waterloo Cup Winners. | FROST W E & BROWN M E Trout Collins, U.K. 1967. First Edition, Hard Cover. Near Very Good/Good Plus. From the New Naturalist Series Number 21. 286 pages, size 8 inches tall by 5.5 inches with an index. With 4 photographs in colour and 42 in black and white and 26 text figures. 'Did you know that `. the trout lives, as it were, in a room with a ceiling made of mirrors except for a round sky light in the middle, through which the outside world is visible'? Or how, and why, even as small fry they keep to 'feeding stations', at fixed distances from the bank and depths below the surface? Fascinating though it is, the life-history of these much-fished fish forms only part of the The Trout, the first modern comprehensive treatise on the brown trout to be written.Their anatomy, physiology, distribution and food, the effects of climate, water chemistry, human and other predators, their growth and weight, how to assess their condition and age-all these are explained concisely and illustrated with many photographs, drawings and maps. The authors are both leading authorities on the subject, and Dr. Frost is an angler as well as ichthyologist. Other anglers will enjoy learning more about the object of their obsession: they may even catch more.' | IONIDES C J P Hunter's Story W H Allen, U.K. 1965. First Edition, Hard Cover. 222 pages, size 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches with an Appendix. Illustrated with black and white plates. ' C. J. P. onides is one of the famous characters of East Africa, a country which has never lacked its great originals. At 64, after a life spent largely in solitude in the wilds of Tanganyika, he has evolved from a great hunter and conservationist into a celebrated naturalist, one of the foremost authorities on poisonous snakes, which he collects for zoos and museums of the world. His knowledge of reptiles and his skill and courage in capturing and handling them have made him famous. His fantastic experiences hunting rogue and raider elephant - and Ionides slew some 1,200 such elephant as part of his job to protect the inhabitants of the Southern Province of Tanganyika from their depredations - make fascinating reading. Most of this work was done at extremely close quarters. There were occasions when, following elephant into tangled undergrowth, he found himself literally within a few feet of his quarry. This sort of hunting called for iron nerve, and lonides is one of the few people to have been "beaten up" by an elephant and survived, and he describes the experience in vivid detail. But it is his personal qualities which have made him one of the outstanding characters of his generation. Living alone for most of his life in primitive conditions he has had time, as few people nowadays can ever have it, to think things out for himself. Besides being a man of action, he is also one of scholarly leanings with a prodigious memory that makes him one of the most brilliant and charming conversationalists of the age. He has become something sufficiently rare in any age, a man wholly and unequivocally himself. In this, his autobiography, he sets down, not only his philosophy and understanding of life, as he has observed it at close quarters in nature, but all the variety and excitement that have added piquancy to the secret art of getting the most out of the short span given to us .' Book - Very Good - faint vertical crease to spine, tiny 'crop' to the very extreme bottom corner of the last 5 leaves, mentioned because we like to be thorough but truthfully hardly noticeable. Otherwise, clean, bright & tighrtly bound. Dust Jacket - Good+ - a few closed and repaired to verso tears to edges with rsultant light creasing to extreme bottom front and top back panels, otherwise bright and clean. An attactive copy of this desirable work complete with dust jacket. Shipped Weight: 750gms-1kgm. | ROCHE CATHERINE DE LA Cats in Focus Godfrey Cave Associates, U.K. 1982. First Edition (UK), Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good. 83 pages with many colour photographs. What is it like to be a cat? Describing a variety of feline characters and episodes, the author attempts to give their side of the story. The book suggests that not all those who walk alone, like Kipling's hero, do this by choice. Neither do the victims of circumstance who, putting up with detested housemates, attempt to stay home as long as they can bear it. Some, on the other hand, form affectionate partnerships with cats or people or both, and others again become pitifully dependent on a human companion. There is drama and pathos in some passages; others reflect the passion and sense of fun that are typical of happy cats. And there is a wealth of information gathered in the belief that, however strong the features that distinguish the feline species from others, every cat is unique. What distinguishes this book from most others about cats is, perhaps, the author's motive. She has endeavoured to dissociate everything experienced or observed by her from the age-old attitudes reflected in fables, myths or lyrics as well as from those promoted by self interested people who judge animals according to their usefulness. Indeed, this book is meant to redress the balance, however modestly, between the few books meant to protect animal interests and the many intended to serve vested interests or to entertain by anthropomorphising the subjects. Catherine de la Roche wrote CATS IN FOCUS to bear witness to what she has learnt from cats.
