| BISHOP C F H AND MAUNDER W F Potato Mechanisation And cStorage Farming Press Limited, U.K. 1980. First Edition, Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good. 256 pages, size 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches with an index. Illustrated with a fold out frontispiece, black and white plates and figures and diagrams in the text. 'The last two decades have seen dramatic changes in the mechanisation and storage of the potato crop. This timely book by two advisers from the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service describes the latest techniques and machinery available for potato growers. The authors follow the complete cycle of the crop from receiving seed on the farm to market preparation. Different sprouting techniques are explained. Cultivations, stone removal, planter types and seed handling methods are covered in detail. Importance is attached to the correct choice of irrigation equipment and chemical application methods for the potato crop. Harvesting is treated as an engineering problem with emphasis placed on damage prevention and separation of the tubers from the vast quantity of soil, clod and stones. A quality product that fulfils the market requirements is, to a great extent, determined by successful storage. The authors discuss in detail features of store design such as ventilation requirements, the use of refrigeration, humidification and the choice of insulation material and the levels of insulation required. The latest control systems and store monitoring equipment are explained fully in the book. Potato Mechanisation and Storage will assist the farmer to make his choice from amongst the most up-to-date equipment and techniques now available to enable him to maximise saleable yields and returns from his particular situation. It will also providean excellent reference manual for the potato machinery trade and forcollege students.' | GAMBA CHARLES National Union Of Plantation Workers :The History Of The Plantation Workers Of Malaya 1946-1958 Donald Moore for Eastern Universities Press Ltd, Singapore, 1962. First Edition, Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 'xii, 292 pages, size 8.5 inches tall by 6 inches. 'This book is concerned with the evolution of the trade union movement in Malaya and Singapore during the formative years 1946-1950. It is the first full-length study of its kind to deal with such a subject within the framework of post-war Malayan politics, history, sociology, race relations, and labour economics. Its sub-title, A Study In Colonial Labour Unrest, indicates the theme which pervades the book from its first to its last page. To some extent, it also adds a new facet to the demand for self government by the Malayan people. Deliberately written in a non-technical style, so that it may be read with equal interest by the layman, economist, sociologist, and political scientist, the book offers new knowledge to further the understanding of the general un-rest which permeated the Malayan labour movement soon after World War II. It also indicates a further aspect of what came to be known as "the Emergency" the bitter struggle between the Malayan Government and the Malayan Communist Party. This book ......describes the origins, growth and development of a trade union movement in the plantations industry of Malaya. Rubber has always been the mainstay of the Malayan economy and the rubber tappers have been the human instrument to collect such natural wealth. The tappers came originally as contract labour from South India. The rubber estates became their new home; even their village. The plantation workers whether rubber tappers, tea pickers or palm oil estates labour found their economic position always linked to the fluctuations of the world price of rubber. Social, economic and even political problems had to be faced by these people. They experienced hardship and loneliness. Their lot was later shared with smaller groups of Chinese and Malays. In this book it is shown how these men and women faced up to their difficulties and how eventually, through unionization and under the dynamic leadership of the National Union of Plantation Workers, solved many of their human, social and economic problems, to become the most highly organized plantation workers in Asia. Trade unionism here shows itself not only as an instrument to improve upon the wages of labour, but also how it can be a beneficial force for social change.' | MCLEAN K A Drying And Storing Combinable Crops Farming Press Limited, U.K. 1980. First Edition, Hard Cover. Fine/Good Plus. 281 pages, size 8.5 inches tall by 5.5 inches with an index. Illustrated with a fold out frontispiece, blackand white plates, figures and diagrams in the text. 'The cost of growing 'combinable' crops and their high potential value when marketed in good condition has outlawed guesswork during the drying and storage process. With the introduction of Intervention Standards has come the realisation that failure to meettheir precise requirements can be costly. Ironically the factor which causes most difficulty is reducing the moisture content of combined crops to intended levels and the author considers that this is one quality factor over which farmers should have complete control. Repeated requests to speak at conferences and meetings on this subject provided him with a unique opportunity to identify the problem areas. A farmer asking where he could read about these matters brought about the realisation that no book on the subject was currently published in this country. Ken McLean decided to resolve this situation and this book is the outcome. It is a reference book containing practical and fundamental details of the grain drying and storage process written for farmers, students and consultants who are involved with drying and storing combinable crops.' | SIMONS PAUL Action Plant : Movement and Nervous Behaviour in Plants Blackwell, U.K. 1992. First Edition, Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. xi, 323 pages, size 9.25 inches tall by 6 inches. 'The Action Plant is a radical new way of looking at plants as sensitive moving creatures, more like primitive animals than vegetables, and is based on a wealth of research, brought together in one place for the first time. Paul Simons examines the animal-like behaviour of plant movements and shows that movements are not peculiar to a famous few 'weird' species. Many leaves can search for light like miniature satellite dishes tracking the sun, insects can be bludgeoned into cross-pollination, and one fungus seems to have the habits of a triffid by spearing passing creatures with a harpoon. But the book is not simply a catalogue of these extraordinary natural phenomena. Simons reveals that all plants have a 'muscle' and nerve-like system which they and the animal kingdom evolved from ancient one-celled creatures. The revelation that these seemingly simple creatures have sensors, signals and motors all rolled into one cell shows that 'nervousness' is probably universal to almost all living things '.
