The Right Honorable Syed Ameer Ali (1849-1928) was descended from noted Persians but made his career in India and England. as a judge, lecturer and British official. He was one of the first leaders to recognize that Muslims should organize themselves if they were to have an honored place in Indian national life. He retired to Britain in 1904 where he became the Law Lord of the Privy Council. Copies of this lecture are scarce. | F.L. BIRD Modern Persia and Its Capital and an Account of an Ascent of Mount Devavend, the Persian Olympus Wash DC, National Geographic Society. 1921. Entire issue of National Geographic Magazine, Vol XXXIX, No 4 (April 1921), pp353-416, 47 photo illustrations. The issue is entirely devoted to Persia. The only other article, Persian Caravan Sketches: The Land of the Lion and the Sun as Seen on a Summer Caravan Trip, is by Harold F. Weston on pp417-468, and includes a map and 63 illustrations of which 16 are in color (some colored by the author). Tall 8vo/25.5cm. F.L. Bird had been an instructor at an American college in Teheran for five years. Harold F. Weston had been employed by the YMCA in Mesopotamia since 1916. Both articles present views of a Persia (called Iran since the 1930s) very different from the present. Printed grey wrappers, light soil, small almost unreadable round stamp of Lahore publisher, almost no wear and internally fine. An abstract of a manuscript in the Charles Schefer collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale by the distinguished early Persianist, Edward Granville Browne (1862-1925). The author of the manuscript was, Najmu'd-Din Abu Bakr Muhammad b. ali b. Sulayman..ar-Rawandi. It was composed about 1202-02 and is essentially a history of the Seljuqs from the beginning of their dynasty to the author's own time, (A.D.1027-1197). Rare copy printed by Stephen Austin, one of the first printers in England to have fonts of oriental scripts. Anthony Sherley (1565-1635) and his brother Robert (1582-1628) went to Persia in 1598 to persuade the Persian ruler Shah Abbas to unite with the Christian princes of Europe against the Turks, and to promote trade between Persia and England. Anthony was made an ambassador by Shah Abbas and returned to Europe. From that point there is much controversy in the sources including in the text of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Sir Edward Denison Ross (1871-1940) had been Professor of Persian in the University of London and at the time of writing was serving as the first Director of the School of Oriental Studies in London (now SOAS). Charles James Wills (1842-1912) was one the Medical Officers in Her Majesty's Telegraph Department in Persia. He came to South Persia with the Godsmid Mission and travelled widely. Ghani (Iran and the West) states that his work was superior as a travel book to some of its contemporaries" (p399).
