New York, H.K. Brewer & Co. 1910. First Edition. 31, [i] pp, 8 monochrome illustrations from earlier woodcuts, 2 facsimile documents, ads. 32mo/11.5cm. Cloth backed marbled boards, light wear, pages lightly browned, a few pencilled notations on p. 11 and seven words underlined on page 19, otherwise internally clean, tight and very good. An advertising booklet of the H.K. Brewer Company which appears to be the successor to the Henry Anstice Company founded in 1835. The woodcut views are reproduced from an 1850 Anstice publication. An ad on page 30 for pen quills from the Henry Anstice Company indicates samples of the pens are available from the H.K. Brewer Company There are portraits of H.K. Brewer and Henry Anstice on page 22. A scarce little piece of early New York ephemera.

The story of Wall Street based partly on interviews with many Wall Street functionaries. Doris Faber (1924- ) was a New York Times reporter and has written several other books for children.

New York Toronto, Rinehart & Company, Inc. 1955. xxvii, 475pp. Tall 8vo/23.5cm. Black cloth, edgeware and slight wrinkling back board, spine labeling rubbed, internally clean, tight and very good. A rich anthology of writings on the metropolis by a litany of writers such as E. B. White, Lewis Mumford, Brooks Atkinson, Helen Keller, Chiang Yee, Alfred Kazin, Ludwig Bemelmans, Carson McCullers, Mark Twain and others. The compiler, Alexander Klein (1918- ) wrote about a dozen books on popular subjects. Meyer Berger (1889-1959) who wrote the Preface was one of the great humane writers about New York City. A New York Times reporter for most of his life, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his writing and the Columbian University School of Journalism created a prize in his name for "in-depth and enterprising reporting on individuals". A special read for lovers of New York and anyone curious about it..

New York, James Miller. 1865. First Edition. frontis illustration, 141pp, with [ii] pages of ads at front and [xxvi] pages at back--some on yellow tinted paper, numerous illustrations--some folding and including many pictorial ads, 2 maps, index. 16mo/16cm. Brown cloth gilt, slightly chewed at spine ends, otherwise light wear in mylar protector, front hinge beginning crack, signature of previous owner Charles A. Wenman (of Brooklyn) in pencil on two of early pages with date July 19, 1865, NYC Street and Avenue Guide map largely missing, some of the folding illustrations are foxed where they meet an adjacent printed page, the unusually long 22 x 4 1/4 inch) folding colored Map of the Hudson engraved by T. Bonar has splits at two folds, otherwise internally clean and tight. Nine of the ads have woodcut illustrations. Especially interesting is a 'before and after' ad for The Universal Clothes Wringer, with Cog Wheels. Good. A dozen or so of these guides were published between 1859 and 1878.

New York, American Society of Interior Designers. 1983. First Edition. 28pp, 2 plans, many pen and ink drawings and renderings of rooms and details, color cover photo of Veterans Room. Oblong 12mo/18 x 25.5cm. Paper, light rubbing, one corner creased, former owner name (Lorraine Bruton) on interior back panel, internally fine. VG+. An attractive brochure illustrating one of New York City's principal interior spaces and one much used for large public events. Richard Howland, President of The Victorian Society in America and an executive of the Smithsonian Institution says of it, " The majestic hallways and the ten grand rooms facing Park Avenue..constitute the most significant group of authentic 1882/3 interiors in America today." The two authors are co-chairpersons of the Historic Preservation Committee, the New York Metropolitan Chapter of the ASID. David A. Hanks, is head of David A. Hanks Associates, an art consulting firm and has been a guest curator for the Smithsonian. Copies seem to be scarce.
