A solid introduction to the Near East. Dr. Philip Khuri Hitti (1886-1978) has been callled 'the founder of Near Eastern studies in the U.S.' primarily for his work at Princeton where he founded a now renowned Department of Near Eastern studies in the forties.

RIZK, SALOM  Syrian Yankee. Foreword by DeWitt Wallace, Editor of Readers Digest
Garden City, Doubleday, Doran & Co. Inc. 1944. (1943). xiii, 317pp. 8vo20.5cm. Red cloth, light wear, in slightly chipped dj, inscribed by author with date in Arabic, otherwise internally fine. A rags to riches story of a poor Syrian Arab boy who found out his dead mother and disappeared father had been American citizens and managed to get himself to the U.S. Backed by journalist Lowell Thomas who introduced him to Readers Digest staff which then sponsored him for lecturing on his story to American high schools eventually reaching more than a million students in nearly fifteen hundred schools, according to Readers Digest Editor De Witt Wallace in his Foreword. The book was apparently ghost written by Harold E. Schmidt (1908-2003) a Unitarian-Universalist minister who spent two years with Rizk in the thirties booking him for lectures under contract with Readers Digest.
